Page 2 It’s Hot and You Need a Pool How hot is it? It’s been so hot that for the first time in the memory of our long-term members, the club decided to reschedule an event due to the heat. With heat warnings and a heat index in excess of 110°, the officers thought that it would be wise not to brave the elements that day. I hope that no one was inconven- ienced by the late notice, and I would like to thank Mike for sending out an email to the membership and Jeff for posting the cancellation on the club website and Facebook page. It is never an easy decision to cancel an event, and even more difficult to do so at such a late date, but I believe that we made the right decision. Please save those white elephant gifts and some dollar bills for the re-scheduled event on Septem- “Presidents Message” ber 14. Please note that the date is the 2nd Saturday in September, not our usual 3rd Saturday, as this is the only Saturday that Bob Thomas had available. I’m August , 2019 looking forward to another peek at the collection and to see the progress of the restorations that were underway last year. Our August event will be a tour of the distinctive architecture of beautiful Co- lumbus, IN, hosted by the Redman's. We will meet at 11:00 in the parking lot of the Visitor’s Center which is located at the intersection of 5th Street and Frank- lin Street, near the public library. Once all have arrived, we will take a walking tour of the significant buildings in the downtown area. After the tour, we will meet at about noon for lunch at Zaharako’s, the famous ice cream shop. For those who are interested, a bus tour departs the Visitor’s Center at 2:00 and tours the city until 4:00. The cost is $25, and reservations can be made online or by calling the Visitor’s Center at 812-378-2622. This should be a great event, and John Redman has assured me that the weather is always sunny and mild in Columbus! I hope you are all able to make it, and I look forward to seeing you all! I hope you are all enjoying a summer of fun and relaxation, filled with evening By Dan Clark drives in a classic Thunderbird with the windows rolled down, enjoying the sounds of the cicadas and tree frogs on your way to get a few scoops of ice cream in your favorite flavor(s). Ask for a few extra napkins, because the drip factor is high. Thanks for reading, Dan
Page 3 Tour of Downtown Columbus And Lunch at Zaharako’s This month we head south to Columbus Indiana and tour and lunch hosted by John and Ann Redman. We will meet in the Parking lot of the downtown Li- brary at 11 a.m. (see maps on following page). The land which is now Colum- bus was bought by General John Tipton and Luke Bonesteel in 1820. General Tipton built a log cabin August Outing on Mt. Tipton, a small hill overlooking White River, and the surround- ing flat, heavily forested, and swampy valley. The town was known as Tiptonia, named in honor of General Tipton. The town’s name was changed to Columbus on March 20, 1821. Bartholomew County was named in 1821 for General Joseph Bartholomew, who fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe. Columbus is ranked sixth in the nation for architectural innovation and design by the American Insti- tute of Architects, right behind Chi- cago, New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington, D.C. Columbus has hundreds of acres in a city park system ranked number one in the country by the Na- tional Recreation and Park Association for cities the size of Colum- bus. Most of the downtown is listed with the National Register of His- toric Places. In a highly unusual move, the even more exclu- sive National Historic Landmarks Program honored the city by ac- cepting six locations simultaneously. Columbus is also home to NAS- CAR racing champion Tony Stewart and Chuck Taylor, among others. If you would like to caravan down, we will meet in the Steak-N- Shake parking lot on Southport Rd. just East of I-65 on the south side of Indy. Please be there by 9:45 as that is when we will leave. This will be a great time to get the ‘Bird out for a nice run. If you don’t feel like driving yourself, there will be plenty of extra seats so don’t let this stop you from joining us!
