DURBAN-NORTH COLLEGE The Perfect Balance January 2019 We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. JK Rowling FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE…. It is the first newsletter of 2019! May it be an awesome, blessed year for each DNC family. May we take our school to a new level during 2019 with a perfect balance! Welcome back Grade 9 – 12 learners and parents and welcome to the Grade 1 and 8 learners and families as well as all other new families in the school. The start to the year has been smooth and everyone is settled into their classes and getting on with work. I trust that our new staff members also have slotted in quickly and that they are enjoying their time with us. The Grade 8s have had a busy few days which were rounded off with action packed activities after the Inter house swimming gala and their concert on Friday night. Thank you to all the parents that attended the welcoming function for our new par- ents on 23 January. I trust that you enjoyed the evening. The HS Inter House gala was a huge success and enjoyed in high spirit on a warm sum- mers day on Friday 18 January. The school calendar for 2019, with the main events, which are subject to change, was issued to each family. Any changes or new dates will be communicated via our newsletter or the D6 communicator. This term consist of only 10 weeks (48 school days). I would like to see 2019 be a year of concerted efforts to ensure that none of our boys and girls under achieve. WAITING, FOR DROPPING OFF OR COLLECTING YOUR CHILD I once again would like to urge all parents to be extremely alert when waiting for, your child to be picked up after school. The security guards are our first line of defence and do not have the power to stop any form of hijacking from intrud- ers. Your child should not wait outside school if he/she is not collected directly after school. We continuously receive complaints from our surrounding owners and tenants. They are tired of tolerating the inconvenience of being stuck behind parents dropping off their children. Parents remember to please not stop in the road to drop off and collect your children. It is really dangerous for your child to exit a vehicle in the road, in particular with taxis and cars heading to the M4. 7 Ways to Teach Your Grade 4-9 Organization Skills In grade 4-9, children have to learn how to deal with more homework and a busy social cal- endar. Learning organisational skills and how to prioritise time is important. Here are some ways to teach those skills, from planning for deadlines to keeping school materials in order, organisational skills are important. Here are ways you can help your child improve these skills at home 1. Organise lists in a logical order. Goal: Take some of the chaos out of chores. Example: Projects can be organised by due date—or by time needed or how hard (or easy) they are. 2. Teach how to divide and conquer Goal: Keep deadlines for long-term projects from creeping up. Example: Using a calendar, show your child how doing a little work each day can help her prioritise and organise tasks. 3. Have a front-door “go” box or launch pad. Goal: Have everything your child needs for school at the door. Example: Designate a place for items your child needs to remember for school: backpack, projects, sports bag, clarinet or an eraser! 4. Colour-code tasks. Goal: Prioritise chores and messages by colour. Example: You might use red sticky notes for important jobs and green ones for things that have to be done by the end of the week. 5. Use a whiteboard. Goal: Make things easier to visualise. Example: Your child can make to-do lists, map out thoughts for an assignment or just write down things he wants or needs to remember. 6. Set a weekly schoolbag cleaning day. Goal: Get rid of clutter and important items. Example: Clearing out old papers, unnecessary things, leftover snacks and pencil stubs once a week can make it easier for your child to find things. 7. Keep track of time. Goal: Help your child plan better. Example: Writing down start and end times for chores or assignments for a couple weeks can help your child figure out how to budget time in the future.
