The Rosehill Review 5 June 2018 Term 2 ISSUE 3 Principal’s News Malo e leilei, I hope you all had a relaxing long weekend. We have already reached the midpoint of the year, and look forward to meeting you all at the 3-way conferences towards the end of the term. Our school cafe RISE will be operating from 8:00 - 3:00 on our 3-way conferencing day, (Wednesday 4th July), so bring your spare coins for a coffee or a hot chocolate. As many of you will be aware the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why was released worldwide at 7pm on Friday 18 May. All 13 episodes were available to view at this time and it is possible that some students may have ‘binge watched’ them already. Because of the subject matter of this programme, a new resource hub is now live on the Mental Health Foundation’s website. It includes an episode guide developed by the Foundation and the Office of Film and Literature Classification. The episode guide covers off key themes in each episode and has links to resources to support safe conversations with young people about issues raised by the show. 13 Reasons Why is certainly not the only challenging series young people are watching, but it is one of the most talked about. The Chief Censor has released a guide for parents: Talking with young people about what they’re watching . The guide is available on the Office of Film and Literature Classification’s website. If you, parents or whānau are concerned about a young person please seek help. The Mental Health Foundation website has a list of contacts, or phone your local DHB’s Mental Health Crisis Team (CATT Team). Support is also available from a trained counsellor anytime by calling or texting 1737 Thanks for your support in helping all our children stay safe. Maria Owers Principal
The A in Rosehill RACER is for ACHIEVING Here are some helpful hints of how you can help your child achieve: Children can achieve well at school when their family and friends take an interest in their school and schoolwork. Getting involved in your child’s education shows that you care about their school life. 1. Meet your child's teacher When the school year starts, try to find a way to meet your child's teacher. We have a Meet the Teacher night early in Term 1 and this is an opportune time to meet your child's teacher. Making contact at this time allows you to develop a partnership with the teacher and lets your child know that you have taken an interest in their education. Make it clear that you are happy for the teacher to contact you should they feel the need to send a congratulations home or a concern about your child's learning or behaviour. 2. Get to know who's who at your child's school There are many people at our school who are here to help your child learn, grow socially and emotionally, and navigate the school environment. Within our school we have classroom teachers, senior teachers, a curriculum director, a deputy principal, a principal, a social worker and a health nurse - quite a selection of amazing professional people. Our frontline staff at the office are very helpful and will help put you in touch with the person that you would need to speak to. Rosehill Intermediate 3 - Way Conferences Wednesday July 4th 8:30 a.m. - 6:45 p.m. You are invited to come and meet your child’s teacher and hear your child talk to you about their learning. As the school is closed for instruction for the day, all students are required to make an appointment to discuss their learning with their parents and teacher. Paper copies of appointment booking sheets will be available tomorrow. Online appointment bookings will be available next Tuesday 12th June 2018. If you would like to see what your child is learning in technology, the department is open for viewing from 8:30 - 4:00. All Technology teachers will be available to discuss their programme during those times.

NZEI - PAPAKURA TEACHER UNION MEETING - Monday 25th June Dear Parents / Caregivers You may be aware of the nationwide crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers. Children need teachers with enough time to teach so they can give each child the attention they deserve, and children need talented and inspiring people to be attracted to teaching. Children are missing out on some opportunities to learn because teachers are bogged down in administration or are struggling to get enough support for children with additional learning needs. Our goal is to free teachers to teach, and Principals to lead, by getting the additional support and staff that schools need, and we’ll attract more people to teaching by respecting and paying them as the professionals they are. NZEI Te Riu Roa members at our school will be attending the Papakura NZEI Union Meeting so that we can plan and discuss the campaign and their upcoming collective agreement negotiations. Our children deserve the best education in the world, and New Zealand can afford to provide it. It’s just a matter of priorities. Thanks for your cooperation in this important matter. Please complete and return this permission slip to your classroom teacher. Normal bus schedules will continue to operate on this day.
