ENCOURAGING ALL IN THE AIM TO BETTER OUR BEST Tottenham Central School Principal: Amanda Thorpe Week 2 Term 3 Thursday, 22 July, 2021 Principal’s message Casual Position We are seeking expressions of interest from people wishing to be placed on our casual list for Student Learning Support Officer. This position requires a current Working With Children Check. Applicants are requested to submit an expression of interest (2 pages maximum), addressing the role statement by 22 July . Please include the names and contact details of two referees. Applications can be submitted to the school office, or emailed to the school email address. Expression of Interest: School Learning Support Officer Position Information: School Learning Support Officers, under the supervision and direction of a teacher, assist in classroom activities, school routines, and the care and management of students with special needs. The role includes: • implement individual education programs • assist students in individual and group situations in specific learning areas • assist staff to prepare basic curriculum support resources • provide opportunities for students to develop personal, social, independent, living and pre-vocational skills • attend to the personal care needs of students. ‘Tell Them From Me’ Survey Results The ‘Tell Them From Me’ student survey provides schools with insights into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices at their school, from the perspective of students. All students in Years 4 to 6 and 7 to 12 participate annually. In 2016, our school results were very poor with us scoring well below state average in the vast majority of areas. Moving forward to 2021, and after an extensive change in the way we do things at our school, along with many, many hours of professional learning in student wellbeing and curriculum delivery, our results continue to improve and show outstanding growth. ENCOURAGING ALL IN THE AIM TO BETTER OUR BEST Principal’s message continued Some of the examples of outstanding improvement include: Caring for Students - Students feel they have someone at school who consistently provides encouragement and can be turned to for advice. • In this school in 2016, students rated advocacy at school 6 out of 10 (below state average). • In 2021, students rated advocacy at school 9.5, compared to the NSW Govt norm of 7.7. Effective Learning Time - Important concepts are taught well, class time is used efficiently, and homework and evaluations support class objectives. • In 2016, students rated Effective Classroom Learning Time 7.2 out of 10 (below state average). • In 2021, students rated Effective Classroom Learning Time 9.5. The NSW Govt norm for these years was 8.2. Relevance - Students find classroom instruction relevant to their everyday lives. • In 2016, students rated Relevance 7.2 out of 10 (below state average). • In 2021, students rated Relevance 9.5. The NSW Govt norm for these years is 7.9. Positive teacher—student relations Students feel teachers are responsive to their needs and encourage independence with a democratic approach. • In 2016, Positive Teacher-Student Relations were rated 7.1 out of 10 (below state average). • In 2021, Positive Teacher-Student Relations were rated 9.7. The NSW Govt norm for these years was 8.4. Expectations for success - The school staff emphasises academic skills and holds high expectations for all students to succeed. • In 2016, students rated Teachers' Expectations for Academic Success 7.7 out of 10 (below state average). • In 2021, students rated this area as 9.6, compared to the NSW Govt Norm of 8.7. COVID Update Restrictions continue, which has resulted in the postponement of a number of events for us and surrounding schools. We are still operating at Level 2 restrictions, and will update you if there are any changes. Please note that masks MUST be worn by all visitors to our school for the duration of your time on site. While there have been some changes within the groups that receive the plastic lids, there are multiple groups using them so we will continue to collect them. If anyone is interested in adding to our charity collection of metal drink bottle lids, aluminium ring pulls, plastic milk/UHT/water/soda bottle lids and bread tags, please ensure they are: •clean and dry •do not have any inserts that cannot be removed •plastic lids are not larger than 2.5cm (or 1 inch) wide, and •addressed to “SRC - care of Mrs V. Baker”. Congratulations to our award winners! • Merit, for earning 5 achievements: Kayla, Maddi, Drew, Ciara, Beth and Harvey COMING SOON: WALK-A-THON: We will be running a walk-a-thon next Friday after lunch, for Education Week. Our aim is to walk around the oval as many times as we can in one hour. We will tally up how far each student travels, and how far our whole group has travelled to see how many small countries we’ve walked around! Conundrum Corner: Sudoko It will be a Mufti Day, so please send students in comfortable walking shoes. Book Club reminder Book club orders and payment is due Friday, 30 July. Cheques made payable to Tottenham Central School. 456 Science—wanted items! Large clean empty soft drink bottles with or without lids. These are needed for an experiment next week to simulate a cyclone. Please send in to the office or to Mrs B Baker. Thank you. P&C Committee – Term 3 meetings Our first meeting for Term 3 will take place on Thursday, 29 July, commencing at 3:30pm at the Tottenham Park. If you are keen to be involved in the P&C committee &/or would like to volunteer at some of the events that we are involved in, to assist with fundraising for the children who attend our school, please join - it’s easy! P&C meetings are held during weeks three and seven of each term - Thursday, 29 July, and Thursday, 26 August, commencing at 3:30pm. Family memberships are only $5, and this enables your family to vote and participate at the Tottenham Central School P&C Committee meetings. ENCOURAGING ALL IN THE AIM TO BETTER OUR BEST Primary news History update from 4/5/6 Last semester, 4/5/6 studied ‘Australia Becomes a Nation’ in History. During our unit, we learnt about the three levels of Government through making a triarama, wrote a report on one of the Australian Prime Ministers, and showed our drawing skills with our Parliament House. ENCOURAGING ALL IN THE AIM TO BETTER OUR BEST Secondary news Secondary Assessment Schedule Week due Stage 4 Stage 5 Stage 6 Year 11– Primary Industries, Work Term 3 N/A N/A Studies Week 3 Year 12 - English Standard, Primary Industries WAP Study Week Next week, our Stage 6 students will be travelling to each school to participate in the WAP study week. Students will work with their coordinators and peers for each subject. Notes have been sent home and need to be returned by tomorrow. Stage 4 Agriculture, Stage 5 Agriculture, Stage 6 Primary Industries This term, Stage 4 are completing a Plant Production Unit. As part of their assessment task, they have planted a variety of vegetables, and will be measuring and tracking their growth each week over the term. The students will also be learning about the different areas of growth of plants in Australia, and why these areas vary. Stage 5 have started working on a Sheep Management Unit, where they have identified the terminology used when talking about sheep, as well as the different breeds of sheep in Australia. The students have also been involved with feeding and leading the sheep each week. The students have had to learn how to effectively work with the sheep, displaying strategies to get them to walk on a lead. The Stage 6 Primary Industries students, have been looking at managing livestock as well as how to handle chemicals safely. The Year 11 students will be doing work with fencing during the term as part of their competencies. EXCELLENCE RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY
