Abstract for Proposal
The Department of English Language Learning serves a diverse student population including International, resident and nontraditional students. Due to their differing needs it is necessary to provide student support resources in a variety of ways. One of the areas of need that the Department of English Language Learning would like to emphasize this year is the development of the whole student, by focusing on computer literacy, which is one of the elements which seems to be holding many students back. The Department of English Language Learning plans to develop a computer literacy instructional program to help students become accustomed to the technology-heavy learning experience which is part of a university education. This will help both traditional and especially nontraditional students gain the computer skills necessary to achieve self-confidence in their own independent learning capabilities, not only now, as a UVU student but also in their future employment endeavors. The benefits of creating a computer literacy course for English language learning (ELL) students are that computer literacy will bring them a step closer to being able to access the materials/resources needed for their specific courses and will help them learn how to effectively use and navigate Canvas on a consistent basis, which benefits both faculty and students. In addition, the Department of English Language Learning will also address the needs of the Community Education ESL program student population. Many of Community Education ESL students are seeking to learn English for purposes which align with their life goals of pursuing a university degree and/or improving their marketability in the workforce. The interconnection between learning English and gaining computer skills is relevant to the success of the unique blend of students which the Department of English Language Learning serves and educates. The computer literacy project would provide this course for the upcoming spring semester and summer blocks. The course would consist of 2-hour sessions twice a week. The duration of the program would be 10 -weeks free of charge for all interested students. Classes would take place in LA-004 the Department of English Language Learning computer lab. All ELL students will have a UVU ID number to access the program. The Community Education ESL students would have a temporary proxy ID number issued to them to use the lab computers. The computer literacy class would follow an approved computer skills curriculum, which would be taught by a certified technology ESL adjunct instructor who is bilingual (English/Spanish). The instructional objectives will be clearly outlined by the course syllabus. Upon successful completion of the program, the instructor will issue a certificate of participation in the computer literacy class. Having access to both an ESL education and a computer literacy course will expand educational opportunities and provide engaged learning to any/all students who need and want these resources.
Project Assessment and Relevance to Inclusion in UC 1) How will your proposal contribute to promoting inclusion in UC? How will your proposal contribute to UVU’s mission of inclusion? In planning for student success, the Utah Valley University (UVU) initiatives and strategies of enhancing student success, which are: ACHIEVE, INCLUDE and ENGAGE, work in synchrony to improve accessibility of educational offerings and provide opportunities for engaged learning for all students. The University College (UC) inclusion plan aligns with the UVU initiatives as represented in the UC inclusion plan. UVU and UC promote inclusion by seeking to address the needs of students who are underrepresented and those with various levels of academic preparation. By making a computer literacy program available English Language Learning (ELL) and Continuing Education (CE) ESL students, we are encouraging them to develop the necessary computer literacy skills which help to foster independence while learning English as they engage in their education in a technologically interactive way. Furthermore, many educational studies have shown that computer literacy plays a critically important role in increasing engagement and motivation in the ESL classroom. It provides an experience that is completely different from traditional learning and, in the form of apps and devices, allows students to use exciting tools to perform many other functions that will enable them to internalize English more easily. The computer literacy project will have a positive effect on both the ELL and CE ESL student populations in the following ways. First, as we provide a safe and inclusive learning environment free of charge, the targeted student populations will have a resource to help them feel integrated into UVU’s learning experiences, which will increase the desire for our students to continue their educational pursuits at UVU. While in our programs, both the ELL and CE ESL students will be encouraged to matriculate into additional educational opportunities offered by UC and UVU. CE ESL students will be offered the opportunity to enroll in the Intensive English Program upon completing the CE ESL levels. The ELL students will be encouraged to prepare to transition into undergraduate coursework with confidence in their English language skills. As these students learn to have greater autonomy in achieving adequate college level technology skills, it is anticipated that their commitment to their education will increase as they reach their desired academic milestones. Integrating the traditional and nontraditional student populations in greater proportions into UC/UVU programing is a relevant measure of student engagement and success. 2) How do you intend to assess and measure the results of your grant? (At the conclusion of the grant year, recipients will be asked to submit a one-page summary describing the results of the project.) The computer literacy project will assess and measure the results of the grant in the following ways: 1) In-class assessments for students composed of project base learning. 2) The results of course specific assessments as well as the program completion rates will provide feedback as to whether the needs of the students were met and how many students participated in the project. 3) We expect to see up to 15 students enrolled in each class section with 80% course completion rates. 4) We will rely on the ELL faculty and adjunct staff to provide the Department of English Language Learning with feedback documenting the level of technology competence of the students who participate in the computer literacy course in the form of an instructor survey at the end of the course. 5) Students will also complete a survey designed to inform the English Language Learning (ELL) department and University College (UC) Dean’s office of their rating of the program based on their assessment of the computer literacy knowledge and skills gained, instructional activities, and an overall evaluation of the progress made at the completion of the course. 6) No letter grades will be used, as students will be encouraged to learn at their own pace and ability to understand the use of technology.
