PAGE 3 Preparing for transition it is incredible to think that we are now entering the final weeks of the academic year 2018/19 - where has the time gone? These next few weeks are incredibly busy for everybody involved at SCPS. Pupils are busily completing work for end of year assessments and beginning to prepare for their next year group. This will happen very quickly for our Y6 children who move to several ...every child will different schools across the city, all of which hold transition days during be getting the different time frames over the last few weeks of term. Transition days in opportunity to take school will take place on the Monday and Tuesday of the last week of term. part in multiple Across both of these days pupils will spend time with their new teacher, in activities. their new classroom. It is also very busy in school from next week as our sports days begin - weather permitting! These will stay in the same format as last year with every child getting the opportunity to take part in multiple activities. However, we will also be holding our competitive sports evening for KS2 pupils to cater for those talented athletes who want to showcase their skills. Pupils will find out their new class within their school report. Teachers are also excitedly waiting to hear who their new pupils will be! The only exception to this is within FS2 as our new starter meeting is being held this week when we welcome many new parents to SCPS for the first time. Thank you for your continued support. PAGE 4 SCPS awarded Artsmark Gold Staff and pupils at SCPS have been celbrating this week after finding out that the school has been awarded Artsmark Gold - awarded to school settings which champion cultural education. It celebrates settings which embrace arts across the curriculum, bringing them to life for children and young people. The commitment towards this award was made during the City of Culture year and reflects the wide ranging arts offer across the school. This was further enhanced by last week's art exhibition showcasing work from across the school. Thank you for your support in this. Thanks must also go to Mrs King and Miss Rippin who submitted the bid on behalf of the school. Sports Days 2019 Mr Todd has been busily finalising organisation for our Sports Days which begin next week. Feedback from parents and carers regarding last years' new event format was very positive, allowing all children to take part in every activity. A further competitive Sports Evening will be held which will include the usual track events featuring the strongest runners in each year group to cater for pupils with strong athletic ability. This was also very successful last year - particularly for Mr Rhodes who won the teachers' race! The forecast for next week is not great, and therefore the school will endeavour to make decisons regarding postponement as early as possible - please ensure the office has your correct mobile number for our texting service. New teachers appointed for 2019/20 The school have appointed two new teachers for next year. Mr Tucker and Ms Lowery will both be teaching within KS2. Mr Tucker has been appointed from another outstanding school, Clifton Primary School and has been teaching two years. Ms Lowery has been one of our own trainees this year and will begin her teaching career at SCPS. Pupils will find out their new class teachers within their school reports which will be sent out early July. SPRING LIFE - JUNE 2019
PAGE 5 Miss McKinnon returns from Sierra Leone Miss MicKinnon has just returned form spending a week in our partner school in Sierra Leone . She has written the report below outlining some of the work she completed: We had an amazing week exploring Freetown and strengthening links between our two schools! Both schools made some unforgettable memories. We were excited to make progress towards implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals; Gender Equality and Quality Education being the top of our list! The week started with both myself and my Freetown colleagues teaching and observing. We learned so much from each other. We introduced our school project which was Talk for Writing, in which we focused on the children being able to learn and memorise a story with appropriate actions. In the younger classes, we focused on fairy tales such as The Duck in the Truck. In Year 6, we were able to dig a little deeper and use our Talk for Writing skills to create our own Non-Fiction text about animals. I know that the Talk for Writing approach will continue to be useful to William Moss as Spring Cottage Staff will be supporting teachers by sending across further training materials and lesson resources. It is so inspiring to see teachers across the world working together! Our Gender Equality project has turned into a work of art! William Moss School are currently in the process of creating work around Amy Johnson – one of Hull’s most inspirational women. They have been using different materials to create a marvellous collage. In our school, we have represented Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr as Freetown’s most important woman. Both sets of children have listened and learned about the challenges both pioneering women have faced. It is our hope that through the art work we can not only celebrate our international link, but also celebrate the international equality of genders. We all had a fantastic week and we recognise the importance of building further off the back of this trip. Miss McKinnon
JUNE 2019 News in Brief Dogs Trust To celebrate National Dog Smart Week, our nursery children had a very enjoyable and informative visit from The Dogs Trust. They learned about what dogs should eat and what they should avoid, how to behave if a stray dog approaches them and how to care for dogs! Parking on Lunedale Close Please can parents be mindful when parking on Lunedale Close at school times and also if you are coming to the school for a night or weekend football match. Residents complain that their driveways are regularly blocked by parked cars. This also causes a hazard for our pupils when crossing the road. Thank you for your cooperation. Space evening Year 1 had a really enjoyable space evening. The pupils learned about the solar system as well as famous astronauts and their journeys into space. Parents joined in the fun, bringing with them rocket-shaped fruit kebabs and alien jelly! Art Exhibition Our whole school art exhibition was a great success, with parents amazed at the quality of the beautiful art work on display. The exhibits were available for purchase, which had the added benefit of raising vital funds for a very worthwhile cause, the baby hospice ‘Zoe’s Place’.

SPRING SPORT Historic sporting year continues 2018/19 has been a very memorable sporting year. Mainly because more children than ever before have represented SCPS in competitive sporting fixtures. In fact nearly every single competitive event held across Hull has included at least one team form SCPS. Added to that the fact that in the vast majority of competitions SCPS has been placed or qualified for the finals. Must credit must go to Mr Todd who gives up so much of his own time to coordinate this level of involvement. Again many events have taken palce across the end of May and the beginning of June. Our Year 4/5 team lost in the final of the Hull FA Cup. Despite this, the performance was praised by Hull City coaches and staff from Hull Active Schools showing that although the result was not as we wanted, the boys still played some great football. The table tennis teams continued their fine form against Francis Askew. Our girls team won 8-0 to continue their unbeaten run whilst our boys team won 7-1. Our Sports' Leaders went to One Stop Golf for a tri-golf activity. The children took part in a range of activities linked to a variety of golf-related skills. The children represented the school very well and finished fifth overall. In the last week of the half term, our orienteering teams took part in a competition at Costello. In a repeat of last year's success, we had three teams qualify for the finals event which will take place in July at Hymers College. We have also had tennis success: we sent seven children from year 4 and year 6 to St. Mary's College to compete in a competition for all Hull schools. The children performed amazingly - especially considering the conditions - as our year 6 team finished first and our Year 4 team finished second - well done to all the children involved. At the time of writing, we have six children taking part in an Inclusive Bowling event at Superbowl, and our year 6 girls team are preparing to take on a number of Hull schools at a Futsal competition. Don't forget that our sports days will be taking place in the final week of June, beginning with Foundation Stage on 24th June. The sports days will be taking the same format as last year’s events.
