Te Arawai We celebrated the opening of Te Arawai on Monday. As you know, under Alert Level 2 we had a very different opening and kept our numbers under the magic one hundred. To ensure we acknowledge the people who made this project happen here are key messages from my speech. We are facing another ‘extraordinary year’ with the impact of COVID-19. This makes coming together to celebrate something as exciting as a new playground even more special. The strength of St Albans is its community. Not only those currently with us, but also… those who have gone before. In conjunction with Ngāi Tūāhuriri we have developed a cultural narrative which has been the foundation of the design of Te Arawai and ensures the aspirations of Mana Whenua are interwoven throughout and reflected in the playground. Te Arawai stands in place of a playground developed many years ago by past community members, who are still connected to our school through their whānau. This connection is not lost, as we incorporate elements of that playground into our planting designs. We wouldn’t be here celebrating the opening of this impressive playground without the involvement of many. It is my honour to close this event by once again acknowledging a group of very special people: § Past and present members of the PTA who have fundraised tirelessly always maintaining commitment to this project § The Rātā Foundation who once again supported our kura in achieving a project that seemed financially out of reach Toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te whenua. The stronger the language, the greater the prestige, the mightier the nation.
§ Our Board of Trustees for committing significant funds to the development of Te Arawai § Past pupils who headed up our student design team (I promised you the first play and am thrilled to be able to keep my promise to you) § Our current pupils, staff and the wider St Albans community for their input into Te Arawai § Matua Mikaere, Hakui Stephanie and Di Collier (representing mana whenua) for always guiding us in our understanding and interpretation of our cultural narrative. § Our wonderful development team: o Tina Dyer – Park Central (Park and Playground Solutions Limited) o Steve Bailey – Our Project Manager o Josh and his incredible team from TradeMark Thank you all for the role you played in bringing Te Arawai to life! Now attention turns to Adrian Taylor, parent of our school and the designer of this incredible play space. Adrian you have donated hours of your time, creativity and passion to the development of Te Arawai. You have bought our cultural narrative to life and fulfilled the many wishes of the children of St Albans School. It is so difficult to convey with words just how grateful we are to you. Ngā mihi, Ginnie and the team Out of School Acheivement Lucah competed in the Canterbury Regional Gymnastics Champs last week and placed 1st on vault, 2nd on floor and 2nd on beam, giving her the overall first place award. Pai te mahi, Lucah! SCHOOL NOTICES Mufti Day - Our wonderful school leaders are organising a Mufti Day to be held on Friday 25th September, the last day of term. As well as this being a fun way to end the term, they would love to raise goods for their chosen charitable trust, the City Mission. We ask that students bring some form of non-perishable item to school if they are able to. This can include; canned goods, cereal, toothpaste, soap and sanitary items. Kererū Poetry Competition - Last week the tamariki from both Kererū North and South competed in their annual poetry competition. The teachers were incredibly proud of all the children who participated and their performances. It was evident the time and effort Toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te whenua. We can find a team for boys and girls from Ages 4/5 to our U14 Grade and it really doesn’t matter if your new to the game or have some experience. Thank you Rotary Christchurch New Horizons for their support. Watch this space as our focus on connection, community and contribution continually grows. I am proud to live in St Albans with so many like-minded, lovely people determined to make this a wonderful neighbourhood and willing to play a piece in the bigger puzzle. On our own we are one. As a community and village, we are a tribe working together for the same shared common goals. Take care of our environment and we will all reap the rewards.
