Kyrene de la Mirada Leadership Academy May 4, 2021 May Message from Ms. Branch Usually at this time, I am writing my final message for the school year; however, since our school year extends into June this year, I will save that message for our June newsletter. For May, my message will focus on the greatness of our outstanding teaching staff and our incredible PTO. Some of the many things that I love, and I am sure that you appreciate, about our staff is they way in which they encourage minds to think, hands to create, and hearts to love. These actions pretty much define the culture that our staff has created in order to support, serve, and inspire our wonderful students. I have been honored to work alongside them for the past 11 years and during this unusual, challenging year, I have never been more proud of them. They are true heroes who never imagined a year quite like this, but they never wavered in their love, commitment, and dedication to our children. Thank you, extraordinary staff members! Also, in the category of remarkable, is our Parent Teacher Organization. Our PTO has continued to faithfully serve our staff and community during this challenging year. While this was not the year they had expected, they continued to pour their heart and souls into making this year as community-driven as possible. Students were still able to participate in our annual Read-A-Thon and our monthly PTO restaurant nights provided community opportunities for our families. Treats and meals were brought in to serve our staff throughout the year. PTO helped support the Kyrene Family Resource Center with donations, directly benefiting families in need. And, finally, ensuring that our students have a yearbook this year is another one of their phenomenal accomplishments! I am truly in awe of our PTO board and committee members who worked together to make lemonade out of all the lemons tossed their way. Thank you so much, to our wonderful PTO. Our PTO board is looking to fill positions for next year. I encourage our families to become part of our PTO board and/or committee member. To accomplish all of the greatness that occurs as a result of PTO, it takes all of us. Even if the part you play feels small, it is important. Please see information about the upcoming PTO meeting and election of officers in this newsletter. The “Wildest Ride” journey is quickly coming to end (June 8th). Thank you for continuing to support your child and our Mirada Leadership Academy community as we finish out this unique school year. Warmly, Ms. Branch

May’s Tip: Conversations with Children about World Events From natural disasters, political news, stories of violence, and especially the Covid-19 pandemic, it is likely that your child is aware of world events. Studies show (B) that elementary-aged students are likely to be eager to talk about these events. Understanding world events can help your child build awareness and empathy for those involved, as well as clear up any worries, confusion, or questions they may have. Here are some tips for having these important conversations:
1. Be the first to inform your child: In order to have more control of the information your child is receiving, it is important that you talk to your child before they hear it from a peer or the news. Oftentimes, children may have several questions spanning several days, don’t be too surprised if you have multiple conversations about one topic. 2. Tell the truth: When speaking about world events, it is important to be honest, yet discerning. You may want to leave out details that may be too frightening or not age appropriate. We don’t have all the answers about why these events happen and it’s okay to be honest with your child about this, too. 3. Model being calm: Children often look to our reactions when trying to identify how they should feel about a situation. When discussing a world event, be honest about your own feelings, while also remaining calm. 4. Provide reassurance: Most world events are not likely to happen often, or possibly again in our lifetime. Despite this, children may still wonder, “is this going to happen to me or my family?” or “is this going to happen where I live?” You may choose to inform your child about safety measures and investigations that are ongoing in an effort to help prevent these events from happening again. If the world event directly affects your family: If your family is personally impacted by a recent event, allow your child to express their feelings through talking, drawing, writing, or even imaginative play. Some children may not express their feelings or want to talk about the event, just make sure that they are aware that you’re available to talk, when they’re ready. Simply spending time with your child can provide the comfort and safety that helps lead to healing. It can be especially helpful to remind your child that tragic events happen sometimes, but that we can learn from these events and stick together to grow stronger and move forward.
