The Jewish Press: The First Draft of Jewish History Tuesdays in July from 7:30pm - 8:30pm July 6, 13, 20 & 27 For the last two centuries, Jewish newspapers around the world have epitomized the adage “Two Jews, three opinions.” Whatever the event, Jewish journalists have expressed multiple often conflicting descriptions and interpretations of major events. In this series, we look at a few of these events and the varied interpretations in the Jewish press. Specifically, • Dreyfus: The Trial and the Affair • The Balfour Declaration • The Bernie Madoff Scandal • The Abraham Accords Presented by Professor Howard Lupovitch, this series is free and open to the community. Visit www.cbahm.org/event/thejewishpress to register and a Zoom link will be emailed to you. Summer 2021 XLIII No. 4 Sivan - Tammuz - Av - Elul 5781

Message from the President I am writing this article just prior to completing my first term as synagogue President. In a couple of days, we’ll be celebrating Lag Ba’Omer, a holiday that celebrates the resilience of the Jewish spirit. Over the past year, I have seen endless examples of resilience of the Jewish spirit within our synagogue family. It is my honor to serve as your synagogue President. Also, on Lag Ba’Omer, tradition states there was a break in a plague during the time of Rabbi Akiva. It is my hope that while your read this article, the miracle of vaccination will bring much needed relief from the COVID virus and that we’ll take more steps toward a normal synagogue experience. Please know, Beth Ahm did its part to assist with the vaccination effort. Many thanks to Alyse Grossman, Rich Grossman, and Sharona Shapiro for their help in organizing a vaccination clinic at the synagogue. I am also thankful for the congregation’s Officers and Trustees, committee members, and volunteers. They review budgets, make phone calls, help plan events, engage in critical discussions, and make important decisions that shape synagogue life. We are especially fortunate to have the input of Dr. Aaron Ellenbogen and Dr. Mark Wolf who have provided COVID related guidance and insight. The congregation’s lay leaders take their roles seriously. They are prepared and engaged. Thank you for all that you have done during the past year and all that you will do going forward. I continue to be appreciative and thankful for the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Rubenstein during this period of unprecedented health crisis that has impacted all we consider normal. In his calming and positive way, Rabbi has kept our congregation focused on how our traditions and rituals can help us navigate this difficult period. As we celebrate Jewish life, we are fortunate to have a religious leader that lifts our spirits so we can preserve and sustain our wonderful synagogue and begin to rebuild our lives and communities. I am also grateful to our Executive Director, David Goodman, and the staff. So much is required logistically and administratively to make the synagogue function properly - so much more so in a pandemic. Both Rabbi and David’s willingness to adapt, change, and think out of the box, in my opinion, maintains Beth Ahm’s culture of being a synagogue that is big enough to enrich you and small enough to know you. Beginning in June, the synagogue will be expanding in-person services on Shabbat and will be re-establishing in-person evening minyan. Multiple scenarios, depending on COVID conditions, are being evaluated for the High Holidays with the goal of celebrating in-person and at the synagogue. More information will be shared during the summer. To take advantage of the summer weather, outside events are being planned. Please mark your calendars for Shabbat dinner at Drake Park on June 11 and a picnic downtown at Milliken State Park on July 25. As always, if you need assistance for any reason or know of someone needing help, please contact me at msoble@cbahm.org Marc Soble President msoble@cbahm.org Picnic in the Park Sunday, July 25 at Milliken State Park Enjoy the riverfront, sunshine, and time with your Beth Ahm friends at Milliken State Park (1900 Atwater Street) in Detroit. Everyone is invited to join at 11:30 a.m. for a BBQ lunch and picnic activities in the park. $10 for lunch and children under 5 are free. To register, visit www.cbahm.org/event/picnicjuly25 or call the synagogue at 248-851-6880 by July 20. Join us early at 9:30 a.m. for a morning bike ride with the group. You can take the casual route on the Dequindre Cut or a more adventurous ride through Belle Isle. Bikes are available to rent at the park on a first come basis. Organized by the Beth Ahm Men’s Club. Contact Ira Goldberg at rigldbrg@gmail.com for more information. Perform a mitzvah by bringing cans of soup for the Open Hands Food Pantry. Open Hands Canned Soup Collection July 25 – August 6 Hunger is real in Oakland County. The Open Hands Food Pantry was started in a small closet to provide food for neighbors in need. Today it serves over 11,000 people annually. Canned soup is a staple in every kitchen and in need at the pantry. The tikkun olam team invites you to donate canned soup by bringing it to the synagogue picnic on July 25 or delivering it to the synagogue office. All donations are needed by August 6. Message from the Rabbi Come Back to Shul ASAP I think that the title of this article may say it all but let me explain a bit. Even as I write this article, Michigan is still coming down from a very high spike in COVID cases this spring. The good news is that most people I know are beginning to make transitions in their day-to-day activities due to their increased sense of safety following the process of being vaccinated. Even as we continue to follow public health guidelines, we are able to do more and see people we haven’t seen in a long while. Still, I have spoken to people who recognize within them a reluctance to venture out; they have anxiety about getting together with groups. Even when they know intellectually that the situation is largely safe, psychologically they are having a hard time breaking out of the habits that we have built up over the past year. We’ve spent a lot of time at home and it is hard for some to make changes. As you probably know (and as you can see from looking at this bulletin), Beth Ahm has been working on this transition. We have had in-person Shabbat morning services for several months. We are beginning in-person weekday evening minyan as of June 1. And we are going to be taking advantage of spring and summer with a variety of outdoor activities in the coming months. When should you start taking advantage of these opportunities? ASAP! ‘As soon as possible’ is something that only you can decide. I know that not everyone feels ready but for those who are ready, now is the time to show up in person. Here’s why. While we have been able to take advantage of online opportunities over the past year, there is a lot that cannot be done online. As Rabbi Eli Garfinkel put it in a recent article, ‘Zoom Judaism isn’t the real thing.’ It has been helpful. But being in an actual room with people is something else entirely. Showing up in person allows us to BE somewhere; the opportunity to pray with others, to learn with others, and to have the conversations that we have been missing for far too long. Have we been doing that online? Yes, in some ways. But I think that most of us know that there is a quality of presence which is found only when we occupy the same space with others---even if we are still wearing a mask and keeping our distance. Beth Ahm will continue to take all appropriate precautions for the health and well-being of our community. Part of our health and well-being involves re-growing the bonds of connection between individuals and the overall sense of community that are important for living full lives. I hope to see you soon. Rabbi Steven Rubenstein ravsteven@cbahm.org 248-410-2582 Israel Book Club Thursday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to join Rabbi Rubenstein for a discussion on the book And the Bride Closed the Door by Israeli author Ronit Matalon. Minyan Matters Among the many aspects of congregational life that have been out-of-the-ordinary during the COVID pandemic has been our daily minyan. As we look forward to improving public health circumstances, we have made plans to transition back towards our full daily minyan schedule. Please see below to learn about our plans. Morning Minyan On June 1, Beth Ahm will return to our pre-pandemic morning service schedule: Sunday 9:00 a.m. Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. For the time being, morning services will continue to meet on Zoom. Evening Minyan We have had a full weekday service schedule for evening services throughout the pandemic and will continue with our current schedule: Sunday 5:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday 7:00 p.m. Friday 6:00 p.m. Beginning on June 1, we will be inviting people into the synagogue building for in-person evening minyan. We will be meeting in the main lobby of the synagogue. There is sufficient space in the lobby for even a larger-than-average minyan crowd, so there will be no need to sign-up in advance in order to attend. In the near-term, we will continue to use Zoom so that people can join us online. As we have throughout the pandemic, we will follow a policy of counting a minyan only when there are 10 people gathered in one space. While we have recited one kaddish at the end of weekday Zoom services, we have been operating without a minyan during this period. As we welcome people to join us in-person, we plan to have a minyan in-person each night. We are all in the midst of a variety of transitions happening in the workplace, with our relatives and friends, and with Beth Ahm as well. I am excited for us to be able to increase opportunities for our congregation to be together in the coming months. Minyan is one important aspect of that. Thank you for your dedication to our Minyan!
