2 April 2021 A Message from Rabbi Jacob Herber Rabbi Jacob Herber T he Book of Numbers Chapter 9 contains a story about the Israelites and their journey through the wilderness of Sinai. Moses enjoins the people to offer the Pesah, the With the destruction of the Temple, and the fact that sacrifices were no longer offered, Pesah Sheni became a vestigial ritual, a symbol of past holiday celebrations. Today, Passover sacrifice, on the 14th day of the first month of the we remember it because on that day Tahanun, prayers of year at twilight, in the same way they had been commanded individual penitence, aren’t recited. to do in Egypt. There is one singular theme isn’t forgotten: God allows Bemidbar tells us: "But there were some men who were second chances. If a person, through no fault of his own, impure by reason of a corpse and could not offer the could not be present in Jerusalem to celebrate the paschal Passover sacrifice on that day." The men come before Moses sacrifice and commemorate the Exodus from Egypt, he was and Aaron and are upset. "Impure though we are by reason granted another opportunity exactly a month later to do of a corpse,” they say, “why must we be prohibited from so. Second chances can occur and the law of Pesah Sheni presenting the Lord's offering at its set time with the rest of teaches us that everyone deserves that second chance. This the Israelites?" Moses is unsure how to respond to them, so is about the power of teshuvah, the power of repentance. It he turns to God for advice. enables us to make sincere amends for the mistakes we’ve made. If we miss the mark, we’re granted a second chance. If "When any of you or of your prosperity who are defiled we’ve gone off the moral, ethical grid, far from God or from by a corpse or on a long journey would offer a Passover others, we have another opportunity to get things right. sacrifice to the Lord,” God declares, “they shall offer it in the second month, on the 14th day of the month, at twilight. In his book, Repentance: The Meaning and Practice of They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs." Teshuvah, Dr. Louis E. Newman writes: This becomes the law of Pesah Sheni, the second Passover. God's forgiveness of my transgressions is contingent on my Later in the Mishnah, the earliest anthology of the Oral Law, willingness to acknowledge them, repair the damage I have the definition of "distant journey" was reinterpreted liberally done, and commit myself to avoiding those transgressions by the ancient Rabbis. Through repentance, I confront my own moral failings a normal Passover, the differences include the fact that it was and I simultaneously affirm the possibility of overcoming shifted from a seven-day festival to a one-day holiday, and them and restoring a broken relationship with God, who hametz did not have to be removed from the household. reaches out to penitents with love.
3 April 2021 This posits that an individual needed to feel contrite that he was unable to offer the Passover sacrifice and recognize that he wanted to make amends by being willing to expend the energy and time to celebrate the experience again. The God of Pesah Sheni is a compassionate and understanding God. But we still need to be prepared to make the first move. We have to acknowledge the realities of human life, the frailties of human behavior, and the circumstances under which we live. There are times when it’s all up to us. There are also times when things are completely beyond our control. In either case, we’re often given second chances to make amends and to do what’s right. Compelling Conversations As we prepare for the High Holy Days, which – believe it or with Rabbi Herber not - will take place in only a few months, this is an important lesson. We can all do better. That’s precisely why Rosh Wednesday, April 28th • 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM Hashanah and Yom Kippur occur every year. 5 April 2021 Message from Nadine Strauss, Executive Director Dear HNT Family, I n Jewish tradition every formal blessing must include two parts: A petichtah (an opening) and a nechemta (a closing). Even in prayer we need to say, Seattle boom and bust, and boom again. This is where I learned that raccoons on Mercer Island are protected regardless of their menace. This is where I learned that “this is where we start” and “this is where we end.” I could serve my community during times of grief and times of joy, and that when it is my time for grief or Last year at this time no one could have predicted how joy, the community will be here for me. much would change, and that we were at the beginning of a lethal global pandemic. And so, I offer collaborative communal projects, and have been this nechemta (a closing) for this moment: inspired by the loving acts of generosity which abound in our congregation. I must admit, though, that as much as I will miss Affectionately, the beautiful and poignant aspects of this job, there are some things I will not miss, like 2:00 a.m. false security alarms, plumbing problems on the High Holy Days, or the quest to resolve why it’s too hot or too Nadine Strauss cold in the Sanctuary. In all seriousness, though, I am Executive Director both sad to be ending this chapter and excited by the Herzl-Ner Tamid opportunities for what comes next. The late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z”l once wrote, “Community is where we learn to speak, to share, to love, to trust, where we discover where we came from and what history we are a part.
