HOËRSKOOL BIRCHLEIGH GR8 ENG HL 2020 ACTIVITIES WEEK 2 DAY 5: CREATIVE WRITING PARAGRAPH PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITY IN THE CREATIVE WRITING SECTION OF YOUR WORKBOOK. Explanation: Effective paragraphs have four main characteristics: 1. Unity - all of the ideas in a paragraph "hang together" in a way that is easy for the reader to understand. This helps the reader to follow the writer's ideas. The reader can expect that a given paragraph will deal only with one main topic; when a new paragraph begins, this signals that the writer is moving on to a new topic. 2. Coherence - the flow of ideas in a paragraph is easily understood by the reader. The flow is logical/ chronological/descriptive etc. 3. Adequate Development - a paragraph is adequately developed when it describes, explains and supports the topic sentence. A good rule of thumb to follow is to make sure that a paragraph contains at least four sentences which explain and elaborate on the topic sentence. 4. Topic Sentences - The function of a topic sentence is to describe what the paragraph will be about, so that the reader has clear expectations about what will follow. An effective topic sentence contains only one main idea. The remainder of the paragraph then develops that idea more fully, offering supporting points and examples. After reading a topic sentence, one should be able to anticipate the type of information contained in the rest of the paragraph^ the remainder of the paragraph does not fulfil the "promise" of the topic sentence, the paragraph will lack unity, coherence and adequate development. Exercise: Paragraph Review Read the paragraphs below and do the following: • Underline the topic sentence. (Cross out any sentence that doesn't belong) • Box or highlight transitional words and phrases. • Determine if the organisation of the paragraph is: • chronological, spatial, descriptive, simple listing, cause & effect, compare/contrast 28
HOËRSKOOL BIRCHLEIGH GR8 ENG HL 2020 ACTIVITIES 1) My family loves to spend a beautiful sunny day at the beach. The excitement starts before we ever leave the house. Mom and I gather in the kitchen and pack a picnic lunch, a cooler of drinks, and lots of exciting snacks for the day. While we are packing the lunch, Dad and Billy gather together our beach umbrella, beach blankets and towels, floats, chairs, and our sand castle building supplies. Then, we head out to the beach, singing and laughing together along the way. When we finally reach the beach, we stake out our territory, put up our umbrella, spread out our blanks, and start having fun. We hit the ocean and swim and splash around in the waves. After we enjoy our picnic lunch, we lie around in the sun and build sand castles. These days at the beach will be remembered for the rest of our lives. It is such great family fun. We also like to go to the movies. Order of organization: ____________________________________ 2) The painting I bought last week is an example of beauty and technique coming together perfectly. The colors used in the painting all blend together beautifully, making the leaves appear to dance across the canvas as the warm fall colors change in tone from pale yellows to oranges and moving into the jewel tones of reds and maroons. Contrasting the warm colors of the leaves, the cool colors of the clear blue sky and the stark white picket fence further enhance the jewel tones of the autumn landscape. The subtle shadowing beneath the trees and at the edge of the fence add depth to the painting. I saw a painting of an elephant when I bought this painting that was also good. When I relax and look at this painting, I can almost feel the cool autumn breezes and hear the fluttering of the dry leaves as they spiral to the ground. Order of organization: ______________________________________ 3) Jill and her sister are different in every way. Jill is very quiet and enjoys a relaxing day of reading and yard work on her days off. She longs for her days off to relax and rejuvenate for the busy and hectic work week. On the other hand, her sister enjoys going dancing and shopping on her time off. While Jill seeks peace and quiet and activities she can do alone, her sister thrives on the excitement of a crowd or party. To have been brought up in the same environment, they couldn't be more different when it comes to the activities they consider pleasurable. Order of organization: ____________________________________________ 29
