HELP YOUR GIRL SCOUT TAKE ACTION AGAINST RACISM A Note for Caregivers For more than 100 years, Girl Scouts has prepared girls to be leaders in our world, to speak up, speak out, and take action for fairness, equity, civility, and compassion for all people. Girl Scouts will always stand for justice, for respect, and for the inherent value and worth of each individual. Racism and hate have no place in Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts will always stand for justice, for respect, and for the inherent value and worth of each individual. To live our values and set an example for the girls we serve, it is not enough to simply say what we stand for. We must match our words with action. We encourage you to use the tools and resources below to help guide conversations with girls and encourage them to make their voices heard—with bold moves like advocating for positive change in their local communities and standing up against injustice. • Help your Girl Scout take action against racism with resources and conversation starters from Girl Scouts of the USA. • Take Girl Scouts of the USA’s anti-racism pledge to learn about and join in Girl Scouts’ efforts to help dismantle systemic racism and create change in our communities that is long overdue. • Support your Girl Scout in earning a Citizen or Democracy badge to discover the power she has to make a difference and understand the pathways she has to lead positive change through civic action. When girls earn one of these badges through the end of 2020, they can receive them for FREE thanks to support from The Oregon Clinic. Learn more on Page 12. • Across the country, young people standing up for their beliefs are making headlines, sparking national conversations, and in some cases even getting laws changed to reflect what they think is right. Here’s how you can support your Girl Scout as she stands up for change. • Encourage your girl to speak up and advocate for the issues important to her with G.I.R.L. Agenda resources for every grade level. Girl Scouting is not just something girls do, it’s who they are. It’s who we are. Let’s put our values into action—our courage, confidence, and character—to make our community, our country and our world a better, more just, equitable and compassionate place. 2

STEM STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Doctors, engineers, teachers, astronauts, veterinarians, financial planners, and inventors all have STEM-related careers, and they work to make the world a better place. You can, too! Did you know that over 100 years ago, the first Girl Scout badges in STEM—the Electrician badge and the Flyer badge—were introduced? It’s true! To earn the Girl Scout Flyer badge in 1913, girls explored air currents, types of aircrafts, engine types and even learned how to fly a plane. Check out the “A Moment in Girl Scout History: The Flyer Badge” video to learn more about the Flyer badge! To earn the 1927 Girl Scout Electrician badge, girls investigated how electric currents sent through wires can produce heat and light, and how they can be converted to energy to power a motor. Girls even learned how they might rescue someone from contact with live wires! Today, Girl Scouts helps you gain the STEM skills you need to prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. By earning this patch, your troop shows that—with teamwork and fun—you’ve made the most of all that Girl Scouts has to offer with a well-rounded troop year. The Golden Trefoil patch program is available to all Girl Scout grade levels. Troops are encouraged to begin the Golden Trefoil program at the start of the Girl Scout year in October, as it typically takes a full year to complete all requirements. The first year that a troop earns the Golden Trefoil patch, they will receive the patch for free from GSOSW! Each subsequent year that a troop completes requirements, they will be eligible to apply for an annual, color-coded segment (also free from GSOSW) to accompany the Golden Trefoil patch. Want to get started? Discover the steps to completing the Golden Trefoil patch program today! A Note for Troop Leaders Much of what you are already doing throughout your troop year meets the requirements for this patch program! Take a look at the form in October and talk with the girls in your troop about what they’d like to do to earn the Golden Trefoil patch. This program is a great roadmap for your troop to plan and enjoy a well-rounded Girl Scout experience! 19
GLOBAL ACTION AWARD 2021 In 2015, world leaders across the globe agreed to work together to accomplish 17 goals by 2030—these are referred to as the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, or SDGs for short. They focus on things like taking care of the environment, making sure all people have enough to eat, and improving people’s health. They’re big goals, but Girl Scouts know a thing or two about changing the world! Girl Scouts’ Global Action award calls for girls to address the SDGs by discovering, connecting, and taking action in their communities and beyond. In 2021, girls will explore SDG 13 (Climate Action) to earn their Global Action award. The Global Action award is an official national award, so Girl Scouts can wear it on their vest or sash, just like a badge. Check Out the Award Guidelines: • 2021 Global Action Award Activity Guide For Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors • 2021 Global Action Award Activity Guide For Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors 20

SUPPORT RESOURCES FOR GIRL SCOUT VOLUNTEERS Service Units Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington (GSOSW) is divided into 40 geographic areas called service units, and each service unit is managed by an amazing group of volunteers called a service team. The key responsibility of the service team is providing support to troop leaders and volunteers in the service unit. For questions about the Girl Scout Cookie program, finances, trips, camping, and more, your service team should be your first call or email. Service units hold monthly volunteer meetings where they share recent information from GSOSW and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), provide networking opportunities with other volunteers in your area, and seasonal learning and training opportunities. Introducing the Girl Experience Mentor Looking for Girl Scout programming in your area, or want to know what events your service unit is planning? Have questions about the Girl Scout curriculum? Get in touch with your service unit’s girl experience mentor (GEM)! The GEM educates, mentors, and connects troop leaders and service team members as they facilitate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). Need your service unit’s team roster? Email answers@girlscoutsosw.org. Troop Leader Resources We want to make sure that all troop leaders feel confident and comfortable in their role, which is why we have many resources to help! • Your Service Team. Be sure to attend monthly meetings and reach out to your service unit team with any questions you have. • The Volunteer Toolkit. Planning meetings with your girls is a snap with our online planning tool. See Page 23 for more information about the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK)! • New Leader’s Guide to Success. This guide is chock-full of information and resources specifically for troop leaders like you. • Volunteer Essentials. The Volunteer Essentials handbook is designed by GSUSA to be your go-to resource for all things Girl Scouts, and includes GSOSW Council Volunteer Policies and Procedures. These documents play an integral part in your everyday operations and decision making with girls, and should be consulted regularly. • Safety Activity Checkpoints. This resource provides safety standards and guidelines for all GSUSA-approved activities. Make sure to check Safety Activity Checkpoints before planning any high-risk activities with your troop. Virtual Volunteer Meetings Each month, all Girl Scout volunteers are invited to attend a Virtual Volunteer Meeting via Zoom, where you can get information and updates on new program opportunities, policy changes, and a quick review of other topics that affect your area. The Volunteer Toolkit The Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) is a digital resource that supports troop leaders and co-leaders, making the process of running a troop easier and more efficient! It is designed to support troop leaders in planning and delivering program content through troop meetings to girls. Service unit/administrative volunteers and Juliettes/individually registered girls can also request access to VTK. Through VTK, troop leaders can: • Plan the troop’s calendar year. • Email parents with one click. • View the troop roster, renew girls’ membership, and update girls’ contact information. • View Daisy through Ambassador Journeys and badges (to plan for troop meetings), including new badges and pre-populated tracks for younger and older multi-level troop groups (K–5 and 6–12). • Customize meeting agendas by troop year with other badge and Journey options. • Record girls’ attendance at meetings and their badge and Journey achievements. • Add GSOSW activities or custom troop events to the troop’s calendar. • Locate national and council resources, such as Safety Activity Checkpoints. To access the Volunteer Toolkit, visit girlscoutsosw.org and click on “Sign in” or “My GS” in the upper right corner of any page. Once you have signed in to your My GS account, select “Volunteer Toolkit.” Virtual Troop Meeting Resources We know that it can be challenging at times to create the space that your troop deserves within a virtual landscape. To help support troop leaders to be the best that they can be, GSUSA has created virtual meeting resources on VTK to help navigate virtual troop meetings with success! Available virtual meeting resources include: • How to plan a virtual meeting. • Digital icebreakers and games. • Easy badge and Journey adaptations. • Virtual bridging resources. GSUSA has also introduced a new virtual icon on VTK to denote activities that have been adapted to be deliverable in a virtual space. Simply add activities with the wifi symbol ( ) to your meeting plan and you are ready to lead that activity virtually with your troop! GSUSA will continue to add more activities to VTK with the virtual option throughout the coming year. 23
