HOW GIRLS SELL COOKIES Door-to-Door Sales Encourage girls to canvas their communities with buddies and adult partners, leaving no doorbell unrung! • Girls can take orders door-to-door at the beginning of the cookie sale with their order cards. • Girls can sell door-to-door with cookies in hand. After cookies are delivered, load up a wagon with cookies, make signs, and you are ready for a neighborhood walkabout. Use your Digital Cookie App to easily take credit card payments! Workplace Sales • Girls can contact business owners or managers to request permission to sell cookies at a workplace. • Girls can either make a quick “sales pitch” at a staff meeting, make sales calls around the office, or share their Digital Cookie link with the employees through email, depending on the wishes of the business. • Once employee sales are completed, the business may allow girls to leave an order card in a visible spot. Leave a note from your troop outlining their goals and plans for the cookie proceeds. (Remember not to list the girls’ last names or phone numbers on the order card or note). An adult at work may oversee the card, but it is the girls’ responsibility to fill all orders, write thank you notes and oversee delivery. • Girls should establish a date and time to pick up the order card and deliver the cookies. Social Networking Girls may use the Internet to share their Cookie Program sales links, stories and learnings with the following guidelines: • The Girl Scout Cookie Program is a girl-led program and online marketing and sales efforts should always be led by a girl while also being supervised by her parents or guardians. • G irls engaging in online sales and marketing must review and apply the Digital Marketing Tips for Cookie Entrepreneurs and Their Families. • G irls, volunteers and parents must review and adhere to the Girl Scout Internet Safety Pledge, the Digital Cookie Pledge, the Supplemental Safety Tips for Online Marketing, and Girl Scouts’ Safety Activity Checkpoints for Computer and Internet Use and Cookie and Product Sales (with the exception that they may share beyond friends and family). Sales links should never be posted to online resale sites (i.e. eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Swap, etc.). • Be aware that posts on Facebook containing the use of a dollar sign ($) may automatically move the post to Facebook Marketplace. To prevent this from occurring you must disable the automated function. • Social media ads should not be purchased or donated to promote sales links. • Girls should consider truncating or removing their last name to protect their identity when using social media sites. • Girls, volunteers and parents must adhere to all terms and conditions on Digital Cookie. • GSUSA reserves the right to remove or disable the link for any reason including violation of guidance, inventory fulfillment issues, safety issues, or if sales and marketing activity goes viral and otherwise creates unanticipated disruption. • Parents, girls, and volunteers should contact and collaborate with GSHNC and GSUSA in advance on any national news media opportunities tied to girls online marketing and sales efforts. 2020-21 Cookie Book - 11
Digital Cookie • Girls create customized websites and send emails to people they know asking them to buy cookies. • Customers place online orders and have the option for the cookies to be: • Shipped directly to their homes • Delivered by the Girl Scout to their home • Donate to our Cookies for a Cause program • Digital Cookie orders appear automatically in eBudde™. • If the customer chooses girl delivery, the parent will need to check with the troop for the needed inventory and approve the transaction. • To register yourself on the Digital Cookie site, watch for the email “Ready. Set. Register for Digital Cookie” and follow the instructions to register. • Visit the site regularly to ensure girls/parents are using the site, approve girl delivery orders in a timely fashion and verify your troop has the needed inventory for these orders. • If a girl did not receive her email registration, ensure she is registered with the “My GS” link located on www.hngirlscouts.org. If the parent needs help, please contact our Customer Care department at (704) 731-6500 or customercare@hngirlscouts.org. NEW Digital Cookie Troop Link • Troops will now have the option to create a Digital Cookie link for the troop. This new link can be used to help the troop with contactless booth sales and virtual booth sales. • The link can be created when the troop volunteer logs into Digital Cookie the first time. • The link will create a “troop link girl” in both Digital Cookie and eBudde™ and the troop volunteer will be the “parent”. The “troop link girl” does not affect a troop’s PGA. • All sales through this link will appear in eBudde under the “troop link girl” and must be zeroed out and redistributed to actual girls in the troops for rewards purposes. Detailed instructions for the Digital Cookie site can be found on our website: www.hngirlscouts.org under Cookies > For Cookie Sellers > Resources Booth Sales Booth sales help girls reach more customers and is a great way to increase your troop’s success. • Remember, all booth sales must be approved through eBudde™. • Possible high-traffic locations include: Parks, Banks, Universities, Restaurants, Neighborhood Yard Sales, Youth Sports Leagues. DRIVE-THRU BOOTHS: Decorate a troop leader’s or parent’s vehicle and ask permission from a local business to utilize their parking lot. Park your troop’s vehicle in the parking lot and create signs for drivers driving by, letting them know you have Girl Scout cookies for sale. Remember to stay away from the road and remain within a few feet of your parked vehicle at all times. VIRTUAL COOKIE BOOTHS: Hosted on social media—give girls a way to achieve their sales goals and help others in their community from home. In fact, girls may find this allows them to discover new ways to take the lead in their cookie business and stay connected through virtual means. Create a social media event or live stream, invite friends and family and promote it on social media and to your community. To learn more about hosting a virtual cookie booth, check out the Virtual Cookie Booth Guide on our website www.hngirlscouts.org under Cookies > For Cookie Volunteer > During the Sale > Cookie Booths. 12 - Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council
Other Selling Ideas • GARAGE SALES: How about having a Girl Scout cookie garage sale? Think of how little competition you’ll have! Use a troop leader’s or parent’s garage to hold your garage sale. Put up fliers in the neighborhood. • WALKABOUTS: Take a wagon train on the road. Pick a day and a local neighborhood for your wagon train. Have troop members bring wagons to decorate and load with Girl Scout cookies. Pull your wagons and knock on doors in the neighborhood to offer Girl Scout cookies for sale. • DOOR HANGERS: Did you miss a customer as you were walking door-to-door? Create door hangers to leave behind to let customers know you have Girl Scout cookies. Be sure to leave the troop leader and/or troop Girl Scout cookie manager’s phone number. Never leave girl’s information. • TELEPHONE SALES: It’s fast and easy to sell Girl Scout Cookies by phone. Girls can review order cards from previous years and contact these customers again. Once cookies have been delivered, girls may want to call customers, thank them for their orders and ask if they need additional cookies. Try a text-a-thon. Girls may want to text their friends and family to let them know it’s cookie time and to ask for orders. GIRL SCOUT COOKIE TRADEMARK & CAUSE MARKETING • Girl Scout cookies are NOT intended for resale, meaning cookie purchasers are not able to market, merchandise or profit from our trademarked cookie names, brand, product, etc. • Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council is under contract with our cookie partner Little Brownie Bakers, and only the council has ability to approve and use licensed cookie names and products. Similarly, Girl Scouts USA determines use of traditional cookie brand names and holds approval rights for all national licensing and sales partnerships where cookie brand names are used. Therefore, local troops are unable to solicit or approve the use of our cookies or any associated brand names for resale, cause marketing, etc. Examples: • Cannot sell cookies to local frozen yogurt store to create a Thin Mint flavor of the month. • Cannot sell cookies to a local brewery and approve their use of a Girl Scout cookie flavored drink. This is trademark infringement which can be prosecuted. • Any and all uses, outside of traditional sales methods (the Girl Scout cookie order card, Digital Cookie, cookie booths) of our trademarked Girl Scout products have to be reviewed and approved by Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council. • While we want to encourage our young entrepreneurs and engage community connections, please understand we must also comply with our contractual obligations to Little Brownie and GSUSA and protect the Girl Scout cookie brand. • Please contact the product program department if you have further questions or if you have troop opportunities that require review. 2020-21 Cookie Book - 13
