President’s Message Let the play begin. Being selected to play for your school reflects the hard work and training you have put into hockey over past years. There will also have been considerable dedication and commitment from many around you, including coaches, teachers and families who financially support you. My message to you is to enjoy your sport, have fun and learn from the experiences of winning and losing. Enjoy the sense of achievement and success from winning and learn to bounce back from losing. Apply these lessons to other aspects of your life. Just as importantly, I urge you to continue playing hockey in future years. Be happy to play. Be happy to be part of a team. Be happy to make the most of the social and health benefits that sport brings. At this tournament, you’re enjoying being part of a top school team. When you leave school, you may have to settle for playing in a club side a little lower down the pecking order. Don’t quit just because you don’t initially get in the top team. Develop resilience and persistence to succeed. And that applies to all your future endeavours. Don’t give up just because you don’t get what you want on the first attempt. You cannot always be the best at everything but you will get top marks for giving it a go. Thank you to all involved in this tournament and especially to school staff who dedicate so much time to encouraging, organising and supporting students in their sporting activities. Neil Edmundson MNZM President, Hockey New Zealand 4

Four more were held but with the formation of the New Zealand Secondary Schoolgirls Hockey Advisory Board this tournament was changed. The inaugural tournament was held in Wellington May 1985 on the artificial surface and recognized representative secondary schoolgirls with 12 teams. Meanwhile during this time the secondary school tournaments continued but seedings were introduced after the formation of NZHF. Mr Tom Leigh donated a trophy. He had been the Secretary of the Secondary committee and was a leader in the development of these tournaments. The Leigh Trophy was played for the next seven years and by this time the NZ Hockey Federation was established. A decision to change to the Federation Cup in 1996 was the fitting with the introduction of the elite secondary competition, celebrating the improved Youth programme and acknowledging the linking of youth hockey in the New Zealand Hockey Federation.
