EDUCATION OFFICE
My name is Marianne Marando and I am the Associate Vice President, Academic (Enrolment and International Education) at
Durham College – also known as DC.
Our Oshawa and Whitby campuses are home to over 2,400 international students from more than 72 countries around the world.
International students, like yourself, have chosen DC as their home away from home for a few reasons.
First, DC is known for its exceptional market-driven programs that enable students to develop career-ready skills, preparing them
for an ever-changing job market. You’ll study in state-of-the-art labs and facilities, and experience dynamic real-world learning,
led by experienced faculty, through field placements, applied research, co-ops and other hands-on opportunities.
Secondly, DC has a strong student support team committed to providing you with the assistance needed to study and be
successful in Canada. We understand how scary it can be to leave your home to study in a new environment, but we promise that
we will be here to help every step of the way.
Our International Education team will reach out to you before you even arrive in Canada, to ensure a smooth transition as you
become a part of our DC family. When you arrive in Canada, we will be here to connect you to the appropriate DC student supports
and answer any questions you might have about housing, immigration, finances, and academics. Everyone at DC cares deeply
about your success.
Finally, international students come from all over the world to study at DC because of our strong community. The International
Education office at DC works very hard to ensure you feel supported, connected and a part of our DC family while you’re here.
We connect our international students with each other, as well as other DC classmates, industry and community, to create a
strong support network so that you will graduate not only with the skills and knowledge you will need, but with a network of
people who will help you kick-start your career.

leaders sit on 80 PACs, which means Durham College can tap into

We aim to make your international student experience an amazing one.
You will be supported from the moment you arrive, through a range of

Receiving training in your chosen field before you graduate is an excellent

Research at Durham College
Research is at the heart of what Durham College does as a post-secondary

Durham College provides students with access to FastStartDC, an
entrepreneurial training partnership offered in collaboration with
universities across Ontario, that is designed to help students increase
their entrepreneurial awareness and skills and help them turn business
ideas into successful companies.

PROGRAMS AND ACADEMIC SCHOOLS
We offer more than 140 full-time programs and are committed to relevant, engaging and
industry-focused teaching. Our aim is to enhance your learning with real-world experiences
to make you job-ready and highly employable.
TYPES OF DURHAM COLLEGE CREDENTIALS
Certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programs
•
Certificate: Study for one year (two semesters) and receive a certificate at the end of your studies. A certificate will allow you to enter the workforce in an
entry-level position.
• Diploma: Study for two years (four semesters) and receive a diploma at the end of your studies. A diploma will allow you to enter the workforce in an
entry-level position.
• Advanced diploma: Study for three years (six semesters) and receive an advanced diploma at the end of your studies. You will receive an extra
specialization in your third and final year of studies that will allow you to apply for a more managerial position. Most advanced diplomas have field
placements at the end of the program.
Degree
• Study for four years and receive a bachelor degree at the end of your studies. A fourteen week field placement is required. A bachelor degree, combining
theory and practice, will allow graduates to enter the workforce and/or continue their studies at the graduate level.
Graduate certificates and compressed fast-track programs
•
Graduate certificate: Study for one year (two semesters) or one and a half years (three semesters) and receive a graduate certificate at the end of your
studies. Individuals who are interested in expanding on their previous post-secondary education qualify to apply for a graduate certificate program at
Durham College. You will be able to study a program that complements your past education and therefore you will be able to seek a higher job position
within your industry. Individuals with two to three years of in-field work experience may also qualify for a graduate certificate at Durham College.

Compressed fast-track: Fast-track programs are designed specifically for applicants with past education and present a unique opportunity to complete
diploma requirements in fewer semesters.
SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY & HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE
The School of Hospitality & Horticultural Science is housed at the college’s Whitby campus, within the W. Galen Weston Centre for Food (Weston Centre)
is Durham Region’s first-ever post-secondary presence focused on the field-to-fork concept. Field-to-fork is based on the harvesting, storing, processing,
packaging, sale and consumption of food – in particular the production of local food for local consumers.
Durham College has adopted this concept and applied it to a diverse range of programs that crossover traditional academic schools with the curriculum,
faculty expertise and equipment required to implement field-to-fork, built into several of the college’s programs. The Weston Centre is also home to a number
of hospitality-focused programs from Culinary Management to Horticulture – Food and Farming. Whether you want to be in the kitchen, or in the field, the
Weston Centre has you covered.

The School of Business, IT & Management offers job-ready training in a variety of professional business, information technology (IT) and management areas
including accounting, marketing, computer programming and systems, human resources, data analytics for decision making, information systems security,

The School of Science & Engineering Technology (SET) offers innovative diploma programs for students interested in pursuing a career in a science or
engineering field as well as the Honours Bachelor of Health Care Technology Management.
The program mix offered by SET is broad, including but not limited, to civil and mechanical engineering, architecture, biotechnology and electronics
engineering with six compressed fast-track programs for university graduates to enhance their technical and practical skills. Offerings support current
emerging technologies such as 3D rapid prototyping, ultrasonic testing, DNA manipulation and Arduino microprocessors.

Programs related to health and community services have been offered at Durham College since the 1970s. The school is multidisciplinary, currently offering
programs that span healthcare, wellness and health promotion and community and social services.
Students have access to state-of-the-art learning facilities including the Dental Clinic, a living lab, and a 42-bed mock hospital for nursing students.
Multiple intakes are offered throughout the year as well as a field placement or practicum to prepare students for the workforce.

Programs in the School of Justice & Emergency Services address both the civil and enforcement aspects of the justice system, as well as emergency
services professions. Students studying programs in any of these fields should be willing to serve to ensure public health and safety, and to support the
judicial system.
The school comprises approximately 1,500 full-time students supported by 150 full and part-time faculty and staff members. The school offers four

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies is a diverse school that offers the pre-health science and general arts and science certificate programs.
Additionally, the school delivers communication and general education elective courses to programs across the college.
The pre-health science pathways prepare students for further studies in nursing or other health disciplines. The general arts and science programs are
open-enrolment, preparatory studies programs for students who wish to further their education at college or university in the liberal arts or sciences but
need to acquire the necessary courses or raise their grades for admission. Both the pre-health science and general arts and science programs focus on
strengthening mathematics, science, communication and computer skills, for academic/career pathways in specific college and university programs.

English Language Centre (on campus)
Housed on campus, the English Language Centre (ELC) operated by Ontario Tech University provides language pathways for students who meet the academic
requirements for admission to Durham College but require additional English language training. Qualified students will receive conditional admission to their
Durham College diploma, degree or certificate program at the same time as they receive admission to the ELC.
Benefits of studying at the ELC:
• Six levels to develop the competencies needed for academic programs • Academic and cultural orientation week for all new students.
