Dear Parents, We want to take a moment to thank you for considering to send your son or daughter to attend Fusion at Spurgeon College. Fusion provides young people with a year-long transitional process that directs them from adolescence into biblical manhood and womanhood. To accomplish its mission, Fusion blends national and international mission work with unique rites of passage, significant tasks, and personal ownership of a transcendent cause. The result of this process is a young adult with a life-long burden to share the Gospel and personally support evangelism and missions through the local church and around the world by praying, giving, and going. As a candidate your child will show that Fusion is unique in both its design and outcome as we equip and train this next generation of Christians for leadership and service around the world. Under your guidance your child has come to the point in life when they must learn to stand on their own two feet. At Fusion, we want to do more than merely equip your son or daughter to stand against the tide of the world; we want to produce catalytic leaders who will pull others from the tide of lostness through the power and influence of the Holy Spirit! The Fusion experience equips candidates to do exactly that by providing them an environment where they can grow, learn, and experience Christ’s transforming leadership and direction all while having a positive evangelistic influence on the world. We want you to know that Fusion, while rigorous, is attainable. More than that, Fusion candidates leave the process with the personal expectation that they are to serve the Lord now; whether called to vocational ministry or as laymen or laywomen in the marketplace. Once again, thank you for allowing Fusion the opportunity to train and equip candidates for service and life! We look forward to meeting you and, most of all, allowing you to see the growth and development that takes place in your son or daughter throughout Fusion! In Christ, Fusion Staff | Spurgeon College | Kansas City, Missouri

PERSONAL [ READINESS ] The moment you arrive as a Fusion candidate in August you will be challenged physically, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. We intend to press you beyond what you can handle for a very important purpose; namely, that you would learn to rely on the Lord and on your teammates to accomplish tasks that are much too big for you to handle alone. Through the challenge, we expect you to get strong by getting weak. You will fail over and over again. In the midst of failure you will need to rely on the strength of the Lord to help you do what you never imagined you could do. Submitting yourself to a process like this requires a great deal of personal preparation. Here are some very important ways to begin preparing yourself: WORD Begin establishing a consistent routine of reading through Scripture. Take some days to read through large portions of text all at once such as the entire book of Romans. On other days, take a small portion of your reading and slowly think through each word, phrase, sentence, and paragraph. Most importantly, being establishing healthy reading habits such as these: • Read the text, asking, “What is the author trying to say?” • Interpret the text, asking, “What did the author mean when he wrote it?” • Apply the text, asking, “What does this message mean for my life now? • Pray through the text by asking the Holy Spirit to help you obey its words. PRAYER During Ground School, you will have many times set aside for reading the Word and prayer. Now is the time to begin learning how to pray on a daily, consistent basis. Set aside a time and a place every day that you will use for this very purpose. Start with a small amount (ten minutes) and you will begin longing for more. Here are a few ideas for how to pray in preparation for Fusion: 5
• Thank God for His gracious, saving work through the death and resurrection of Jesus. • Thank God for the opportunity to be taught, trained, and sent through Fusion. • Ask God to prepare your heart for the Fusion process. • Ask God to provide financially for you and your fellow candidates. • Pray that the Lord would teach you much about the Word. CHURCH Fusion is a long, difficult process for everyone who undertakes it. Every candidate needs the support and encouragement of their friends, family, and church family. Be intentional to share about Fusion and your reason for participating in the process with all of these so that they can effectively come alongside you in your preparation. • Gather a prayer team who will commit to pray for you daily during Fusion. • Share with your church your need for financial assistance to cover Fusion’s training and sending. • Communicate with your youth pastor, missions pastor, or pastor what Fusion is, your heart behind participating, and see how they can partner with you. • Connect parents and church leadership with the Fusion staff to answer any questions they might have about the Fusion process. PHYSICAL Make no mistake Fusion is a physical program. Fusion’s physical training regimen is demanding in a variety of ways for every candidate. Make sure to do a variety of workouts that include: As an aid, to help you prepare for Fusion, on the next page, we have included a 6 week workout regimen to get you started in preparation for Fusion: 6

Once candidates arrive at Ground School, they are required to complete the Fusion Physical Assessment (FPA) consisting of push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and two mile run. The results of this assessment will be used to not only place candidates in physical fitness development teams, but will be utilized as an indicator for both training capability and international deployment readiness. It is well known that Fusion serves in “hard places.” As such, Fusion has a moral duty to ensure that our candidates are well prepared for the rigors of international mission service; spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Thus, Fusion has a tangible responsibility to ensure that: 1. All candidates are thoroughly prepared to complete the Fusion training regimen in the fall semester. 2. Candidates are fit to travel to international locations that are physically hard on the body and require a set standard of physical fitness in order to keep candidates - and their teammates - healthy and safe while on the mission field. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us: 5001 N Oak Trfwy Kansas City, MO 64118 816-414-3777 fusion@mbts.edu SUGGESTED RESOURCES While consistent reading of Scripture and prayer are (by far) our best resources for spiritual preparation for Fusion, we also recognize that the voices of godly men and women who have gone before us can make a great effect. Here are a few books, sermons and additional resources that you might consider as you prepare for the Fusion process: BIBLE READING PLANS Read the Bible in one year plan Read the Bible in two year plan 10

HEALTH/MEDICAL [ PREPARATION ] KNOW YOUR OWN HEALTH • Fusion requires that you have a physical exam prior to attendance (similar to a sports physical). We also require that you share any information about current health conditions, medications, or your medical history that might affect your performance in this high stress, physically demanding process. • If you wear glasses or contacts bring an extra pair • If you are allergic to any drugs or have a condition that might require emergency care, have some identification with you at all times indicating your allergy or condition. • If you carry important medications, make sure your doctor gives you a statement explaining that the medicines are necessary. Also, carry all prescription medication in the original packaging. • Start an exercise regimen. This will be emphasized throughout Fusion. Physical fitness is the first line of defense against illness and injuries and will give you stamina for your overseas assignment. Walking will be the main means of transportation at school and within destination cities. IMMUNIZATIONS • The following information was taken directly from the Centers for Disease Control website (www.cdc.gov). Please discuss these immunizations with your county health department or physician. You may find that not all will support the CDC by offering particular recommended vaccinations. Do not worry! They will surely have the required vaccinations. NOTE: You may find the county health department is cheaper than your physician! • Recommended for nearly everyone traveling internationally: • Hepatitis A • Hepatitis B • As needed, booster doses for tetanus-diphtheria, measles and a one- time dose of polio vaccine for adults. • Specific to your country of service: • Each country of potential service will have specific requirements and recommendations for immunizations. • Advocates will work through the immunization process with candidates upon receiving the overseas project. 12
*For the overseas portion of Fusion, all candidates are covered by an extensive insurance policy. This policy covers such as loss of luggage, evacuations due to medical or other emergencies, as well as foreign hospital stays. MEDICAL RISK FACTORS OVERVIEW The Fusion process is physically and mentally demanding. To help potential Fusion candidates and leaders be better prepared, Fusion requires that everyone who participates in a Fusion activity have an annual medical evaluation by a certified and licensed health- care provider: a physician (MD or DO), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. Based on the vast experience of the medical community, Fusion has identified risk factors that could become issues during strenuous activities including running, marching, hiking, overland adventure travel, or other activities. Become familiar with the following risk factors to ensure you are prepared. • EXCESSIVE BODY WEIGHT • CARDIAC OR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE • HYPERTENSION (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE) • DIABETES (INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS) • SEIZURES (EPILEPSY) • ASTHMA • SLEEP APNEA • ALLERGIES OR ANAPHYLAXIS • INGROWN TOENAILS, RECENT MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES & ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY • PHSYCHIATIRC/PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL DIFFICULTIES OTHER RISK FACTORS Sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, leukemia, severe blood dyscrasia, and Hepatitis A,B,C and HIV infection provide special challenges to Fusion participants. To plan for, prepare for, and support those having these medical conditions, it is recommended that an individual evaluation of each situation be done by the appropriate medical personnel. There may be instances in Fusion where proper medical support is impossible. Under such circumstances, participation in Fusion may be denied. For information on any other health issues, contact your personal health-care provider. 13
FREQUENTLY ASKED [ QUESTIONS ] WHERE IS FUSION LOCATED? Fusion is located on the campus of Midwestern Baptist Seminary and Spurgeon College at 5001 North Oak Trafficway, Kansas City, Mo 64118. If you would like to take a tour of the campus or of your living space, you can arrange this by visiting at https://spurgeoncollege. com/visit/ to sign up for a tour. CAN I USE MY CURRENT (OR FUTURE) SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID TO HELP PAY FOR FUSION? Candidates who attend Fusion are eligible to receive Federal Financial Aid (Title IV Funding). We highly encourage students to fill out their FAFSA form as soon as possible, as this is the measuring stick used by Spurgeon College for most scholarships. There are a limited number of scholarships available for those who apply. For more information, please visit www.mbts.edu/admissions/financial-aid/ or contact the Financial Service office at Spurgeon by emailing sfs@mbts.edu or calling 816-414-3716. This includes lessons and templates on how to write letters to potential donors. You are only limited by your own creativity and initiative when it comes to raising funds. We do suggest that you start early with this process (see costs, deadlines, and means of payment. THE FUSION SCHEDULE LOOKS RIGOROUS. DO I EVER GET TO TAKE A BREAK? There are three scheduled week-long breaks during the year and a month-long Christmas break. The week long breaks are during Fall Reading Days, Thanksgiving, and Easter. These breaks give you the chance to unwind, see your family and relax. After candidates pass their Director Inspections on the Friday before each break, then they will be approved for departure on Saturday. For the safety of Fusion candidates driving long distances as well as to ensure full participation on Friday activities, we ask that no travel plans are made on the Fridays before break, but are held off until Saturday. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 DO I GET TO CHOOSE WHERE I GO OVERSEAS? During the first two weeks of Ground School, the Fusion leadership will be observing each candidate closely to determine the international project and cohort that best fits their skills, gifts, and interests. Leadership will take into consideration the preferences of each candidate; however, the final decision for international placement will be made at the sole discretion of Fusion leadership. WHEN WILL I RECEIVE A LIST OF BOOKS FOR MY CLASSES All Fusion candidates are enrolled in the same classes together throughout the Fusion process. As Spurgeon College students, Fusion candidates will receive a Canvas account and a student email address. This will be the main way for candidates to communicate with professors and track their courses. Several weeks prior to Ground School, candidates will receive notification that their course syllabi have been posted for the fall semester. Their books will be listed on the syllabus for each course. WHERE CAN I BUY BOOKS FOR FUSION? The Sword and Trowel, campus book store at Spurgeon College, will carry enough books for every Fusion candidate to purchase one. These can be purchased at Move-In Day. Books can also be ordered online. WILL CANDIDATES NEED A LAPTOP FOR CLASSES? It is by no means required that a student bring a laptop to Fusion, although it would prove valuable. Spurgeon College students have access to library computers during library hours. The library has sufficient resources for students who cannot afford or prefer not to bring a laptop. WHERE CAN MY FAMILY STAY WHILE ON CAMPUS FOR ORIENTATION AND OTHER CEREMONIES? We have a relationship with a local hotel for discounted rates for those affiliated with Midwestern Seminary and Spurgeon College. You can contact this hotel for reservations and mention that you are with Midwestern: Courtyard by Marriott Kansas City at Briarcliff 4000 N Mulberry Dr Kansas City, MO 64116 T:(816) 841-3300 CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 15

You can contact the Fusion office at fusion@mbts.edu or call (816) 414-3777. 16
Fusion [ RULES ] Fusion is an incredibly unique season in the lives of our candidates. It is one in which young believers are given the opportunity to wholeheartedly, undistractedly seek to be satisfied in Christ. In order to maintain such an environment, Fusion has instituted certain rules that will limit the personal freedoms of some for the benefit of many. (1 Corinthians 9) These are not some sort of manufactured standard of outward holiness, rather they help define the commitment that candidates, advocates, and staff are making towards one another for the sake of maximizing this unique season of training and equipping for lifelong service. Additionally, they are aiming toward something bigger; namely, developing a healthy understanding of submission to authority, sacrifice of personal rights for the sake of others, and creating discipline for the sake of the kingdom. HOUSING 1. Quiet hours are between 10:00pm and 7:00am Sunday through Thursday. 2. NO males or females allowed in opposite sex spaces. 3. Everyone must be out of common areas by 12:00pm Sunday through Thursday, and midnight to 2am. 4. For the privacy of cohort members, NO un-announced visitors are permitted in Fusion living quarters unless an Advocate & Training Coordinator approve prior to their visit. This includes family members. TRAVEL/ATTENDANCE 5. NO driving anywhere on campus. This is done to prepare you for walking everywhere overseas! 6. Prior approval to leave campus for a personal overnight trip, visit, or non-Fusion event is required from both the Advocate and Training Coordinator. 7. Those who are out after dark must be with at least one other person of the same gender. 8. Mandatory attendance is required to all training events, classes, chapels, cohort-level meetings, and ministry outreach. 17
MODESTY 9. Modesty in dress (i.e. males have shirts on around females, including athletic activities. Females, no immodest clothes, mid-drifts, short-shorts, exposed sports bras, pajama pants around the opposite sex, etc.) Shorts must be worn over spandex/leggings at all times. 10. All language and conversation will be representative of good Christian character and values. COURTESIES 11. During Ground School, when addressing Fusion Cadre (Intern, Advocate, Executive Leadership Team), candidates are required to start and/or end any questions or sentence with “Sir” or “Ma’am.” 12. When addressing seminary faculty, candidates will begin each sentence with “Professor” or “Doctor” and/or end with “Sir” or Ma’am.” 13. When addressing seminary administrative personnel, candidates will begin each sentence with Mr. or Mrs. and/or end each sentence with “Sir” or Ma’am.” LEADERSHIP 14. Any directions or orders given by Fusion Cadre (Intern, Advocates, Staff) are to be considered directions or orders given by the Director. This means they are to be followed without grumbling or complaining. If a member of the Cadre tells a candidate to do something illegal or morally or ethically wrong, please report the person to the Training Coordinator/Assistant or the Director immediately. 15. Fusion Cadre are to be respected in word and action. This means that candidates do not backbite, argue or otherwise disrespect cadre. Likewise, Fusion Cadre are to treat Fusion candidates with dignity and respect. DRESS AND APPEARANCE 16. The Fusion uniform is to be clean and presentable when on campus, during class, or representing Fusion off campus. Boots are to be clean and free of dirt and mud. 17. Taking care of equipment is essential while on the field. It is the responsibility of the individual to care for and return in good working condition, any team equipment (GPS, satellite phones, two-way radios, medical kits, rappelling gear, etc) that is issued. If it is not, the individual will be held responsible for the equipment and charged to replace it. 18. Candidates and Advocates are required to wear the Fusion uniform to class unless otherwise indicated. 19. The candidates’ appearance and safety is important at Fusion. When in the field uniform, ladies’ hair is to be pulled back and up off the collar of the shirt. Males with long hair must follow the same procedure (we recommend males to get a haircut before coming to Fusion but it is not required). 18
20. No facial piercing may be worn while in uniform. Anyone with a nose piercing needs to have a stud in place or have the piercing removed altogether. No hoops. Anyone with a nose pricing must have a stud in place, or have the piercing removed altogether. Hoops will not be permitted during Ground School or other training events. 21. While wearing personal clothes (which is actually most of the time at Fusion), please feel free to wear your hair as you prefer and any piercing as you desire. Personal clothing should not promote alcohol, tobacco, promiscuous behavior, or actions unbecoming of a Christian. RELATIONSHIPS/SEXUALITY 22. Fusion does not allow Fusion candidates to begin new dating relationships while in the Fusion process. This is not a statement about dating, but about an effort to focus this (very short) season exclusively on training for a lifetime of making disciples for God’s glory. Year after year, candidates who start these relationships, are distracted and the result is stunted development through the process. Thus, this rule has been instituted for the benefit of our candidates – part of our effort to promote undistracted devotion to the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:35). 23. All Fusion participants are expected to pursue sexual holiness. Violations of biblical standards for sexual holiness and the policies of IMB or Spurgeon College may result in dismissal from Fusion. A role of Fusion leadership is to help participants pursue holiness in every way and in every context. Thus, a student struggling with any form of impurity is encouraged to be honest and can expect to be received in a spirit of gentleness and to be coached to walk in repentance (Galatians 6:1). 24. Physical relationships inside or outside of Fusion are not permitted for the duration of the process. Fusion reserves the right to take disciplinary measures to include expulsion from the process with no financial refunds. ALCOHOL/TOBACCO/DRUGS 25. All candidates and advocates, in submission to the Midwestern Student Handbook as well as IMB field expectations, are not permitted to drink alcohol (whether on or off campus), use tobacco products (whether on or off campus), or use any other recreational drug at any time throughout the Fusion process. 19
SUPPORT [RAISING] Fusion candidates are making a significant commitment and contribution to the mission of the church issued by the Lord Jesus. Since Jesus first commanded the Great Commission, those who go into the harvest are dependent upon the provisions from those who stay. Both are working together to see the unreached reached with the gospel. We strongly encourage Fusion candidates to raise financial and prayer support from their home church for Fusion’s training and international deployment. most candidates still need the help of others pay for its training and overseas project. LISTED BELOW ARE SOME IDEAS TO HELP YOU RAISE FUNDS TO PAY FOR FUSION: UNDERSTAND THE BIBLICAL PRECEDENT FOR SUPPORT RAISING FOR ADVANCING THE GOSPEL Americans, believers and unbelievers alike, struggle with the concept of fundraising for personal ventures. However there are several New Testament examples of fundraising to support gospel ministers in the task that God has entrusted to them. One very helpful example is found in Acts 18:1-11: –––– 1After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2 And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them, 3 and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. 5 When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” 7 And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue. 8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together 20
with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. 9 And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” 11 And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. –––– Notice in this passage what God has entrusted to them. Notice in this passage how Paul was distracted from full devotion to the Lord’s work in Corinth until he received support from the Philippian church in Macedonia. When churches and individuals work together to support carriers of the gospel message, it frees up those laboring in the harvest field to be more fully committed to their work (See other examples from Paul’s life found in 1 Corinthians 9:8-14, Philippians, Romans 15:22-29, and 2 Corinthians 9). Fusion has a guide for fundraising available by PDF. Please email fusion@mbts.edu to ask for a copy. PREPARE A SHORT, COMPELLING ANSWER TO THE QUESTION “WHY ARE YOU DOING FUSION?” MAKE A LIST OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW Include friends, relatives, co-workers, church members, acquaintances, schoolteachers, professors, community leaders, coaches, etc. Get addresses, phone numbers, email addresses WRITE A ROUGH -DRAFT SUPPORT LETTER a. Who you are–add a picture (it helps people remember) b. Express your heart/passions/desire c. Your financial need d. How they can send money––Include a slip like the one provided to send with their checks e. TAX DEDUCTIBLE GIFTS: Spurgeon College cannot provide a tax deductible receipt for those who are giving to you since they are designated for an individual. i. According to IRS Publication 526, contributions earmarked for a certain individual including those that are needy or worthy are not deductible. However, if an individual gives a contribution to a qualified organization that in turn helps needy individuals, the contribution would be deductible...if that individual does not designate a specific person(s) they want their gift to go to. 21
ii. Revenue Ruling 62-113, states that the test in each case (whether or not deductible) is whether the organization has full control of the donated funds, and discretion as to their use, so as to ensure that they will be sued to carry out its functions and purposes. iii. However, if individuals would like to donate to needy Fusion candidates generally then they can write a check to “MBTS Spurgeon College” with “Fusion” in memo line. These gifts will be tax-deductible because they can only be used at the full discretion of the Fusion staff in cooperation with Spurgeon Financial Services. INCLUDE A PRAYER CARD WITH YOUR LETTER This should have your picture on it along with any prayer requests you want people to be lifting you up in during your trip or semester. This gives people another way to join your team if they cannot support you financially. SET-UP SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS This may include individuals, community partnerships, churches, etc. This is important to get more people on your team and to possibly meet new people that might want to be on your team in the future. The focus here is not necessarily just money, but articulating your desire and vision and showing people how they can be part of it through supporting you. FOLLOW-UP LETTERS This should have your picture on it along with any prayer requests you want people to be lifting you up in during your trip or semester. This gives people another way to join your team if they cannot support you financially. Many Fusion candidates have found it helpful to create and sustain a support base by sending out monthly emails with ministry updates and prayer requests. USE SOCIAL MEDIA SUCH AS TWITTER, FACEBOOK ETC TO REACH BROADLY In this technological age, you will want to use whatever resources you have at your CONTINUED ON PAGE 23 22
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 22 disposal to reach as broadly as you can. Don’t forget that face to face, voice to voice interaction is more effective because it more clearly communicates who you are and why you want to do Fusion. However, many Fusion candidates in the past have found that using personal fundraising websites can prove very helpful in raising support online. GET CREATIVE You are only limited by your own creativity and initiative when it comes to raising support for your training and overseas trip. Ideas others have used include throwing a cultural party to share about your country and how to pray, posting details on your trip and need in the church bulletin, and working for donations (babysitting, childcare, raking leaves, etc.). PRAY Make sure to ask the Lord for His provision. He has the means to provide for you to do what He has called you to do. Now, there is a balance here, of course. Asking for God and personal action are not mutually exclusive. Work as hard as you can in the above practices and, along the way pray that God will provide for you through these means. Perhaps he will do something unexpected! More likely, He will probably use your efforts and Spirit-driven sacrifice of your family members, church members and friends! 23
SUPPORT LETTER [EXAMPLES] On the following page, there is a sample financial support letter for you to adapt. Please feel free to make changes or write your own. Should you choose the latter, we suggest it be kept to one page; be upbeat, clear, and specific. We encourage you to send this letter to friends, family and members of your church. You will find the process much less stressful if you mail them as soon as possible. In addition to the letter, you may wish to include a self- addressed return envelope. You could ask your home church and your “college church” to assist you in raising money. They may have a missions fund or know of suggested donors or classes that may support. If possible, you could give a presentation to the congregation or a particular church ministry. In addition , it may be useful to ask a particular group (i.e. your parents’ Bible study, the senior adult ministry, the GA’s, etc.) to “adopt” you financially or prayerfully. If a group has made an “official” partnership with you, they may be more likely to be committed and continued supporters. Some candidates raise their money through creative events or services, such as a car wash or baby sitting. These may be done on a large scale within your community or you may choose to approach specific ministries, groups or families. For instance, ask to serve at your church’s next prayer breakfast or senior luncheon - for tips! Approach the womens ministry with the idea of a “Date Night” for a fee, they may drop their kids off on a Friday night for three hours of play. Ask your church to use their facilities and enlist a group of friends for help. Donors may have questions as to the organization coordinating your trip or the exact nature of your trip. Please feel free to direct them to the Fusion office. Be certain to log who donates money for your trip. You will want to properly thank them upon your return. You may choose to send a thank-you letter and pictures, or you may choose to write a story about a person you met while abroad. Your church may also ask you to share with the congregation your experience. NOTE: Support letters are a valuable part of raising funds for this calling. However, nothing can possibly replace face to face interaction! After sending out letters, be sure to set aside time to personally meet or call with individuals that will make up your primary support. This is not just more likely to result in support, but also in long term friends for life. 24
MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE TEAR SLIP FOR INDIVIDUALS TO DONATE TO YOUR ACCOUNT! DEAR FRIENDS, God is doing amazing things in my life. At the age of nine or ten God set me apart with a unique desire to make His Name known. He has blessed me with a passion to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to others. To see the eyes of an unbeliever become open to the Truth and a fire ignite within them is my greatest desire. I long to serve my King in order that all may hear the Truth. With this passion has come an incredible opportunity to be personally trained and equipped for missions and ministry. I am serving with the International Mission Board (IMB), in a ministry called Fusion: an intensive personal evangelism and ministry training process for young adults. I am writing this letter to ask you to be a part of my Mission Council. In some way or another you have supported me in the past as a member of the family of Christ. You may be asking yourself, “What is the Mission Council”? The Mission Council is comprised of Five people in my life that are mentors to me. Each member will help me with two things: (1) You will help me make a list of prayer partners. The most important part of preparing for this trip is prayer. I need you to ask everyone that you know to be praying for me. (2) YOU WILL HELP ME MAKE A LIST OF FINANCIAL PARTNERS. YOU WILL HELP ME FIND 40 PEOPLE TO GIVE $2O/MONTH FOR FOUR MONTHS. Please be in prayer as to whether you would like to be on my Mission Council. I will be contacting you shortly to let you know about a meeting that I am going to have. During each of our meetings we will discuss the progress of prayer and financial support, as well as trip preparations. I will give you much more details during our first meeting. If you have any questions please call me at (Phone Number). Thank You, NAME 25
DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, I hope this letter finds you well. I just wanted to drop you a few lines to let you know about an exciting opportunity that is going on in my life. I graduated last May from Truman High School. Currently, I am attending Longview Community College here in Kansas City (If applicable). The Lord has opened up a door for me to attend Fusion at Spurgeon College in Kansas City, Mo. Fusion a yearlong training process that equips young believers for evangelism, missions and ministry. The Lord has opened a door for me to attend Fusion this next year. The Fusion process consists of two phases: Phase One is two semesters of discipleship and training both inside and outside of the classroom by taking 31 hours of college credit and through training events to prepare me for international service. Phase Two is a summer-long international mission trip where I will place what I learned in phase one to the test as I work with international missionaries to advance the Gospel. My heart and passion is to share Jesus with others both domestically and internationally. I want you to be part of my training experience. You can be a part of Fusion by helping me with two things. First and most important, I need your prayer support. I am compiling a list of prayer partners to begin praying for me as I begin Fusion. Secondly, in order for me to be able to commit to this I will need to raise Financial Support by April 2020. Please pray and ask the Lord if he would have you pray or give towards this opportunity. You can make a check out to MBTS and Spurgeon College and include [“Fusion: my name]” in the memo line, and mail to: Spurgeon College Attn: Financial Services 5001 N Oak Trfwy, Kansas City, MO 64118 Please place this small slip inside your envelope so I can be sure to thank you and include you on my update list. MEMORIZATION FUSION CREED The Fusion creed seeks to encompass the true essence of the Christian life. It is the clarion call to all who are in Fusion to remind them of life’s true objective and the measure of our success. The heart of these words was originally penned by Karen Watson, IMB Missionary to Iraq who was martyred there in 2004. The Fusion Creed is to be memorized. ––– 28
F U S ION C R E E D As a follower of Christ: I am called not to comfort or success but to obedience. Consequently my life is to be defined not by what I do but by who I am. Henceforth: I will proclaim His name without fear; follow Him without regret; and serve Him without compromise. Thus: To obey is my objective, to suffer is expected, his glory is my reward. Therefore: To Christ alone be all power, all honor and all glory that the world may know. Amen! 29
FUSION MOTTO The Fusion Motto is central to the Fusion lifestyle. Everything that Fusion cadre and Candidates are to be and become is encapsulated in the motto. As individuals remember (and thus consider) the motto, they realize and remember why they are in Fusion in the first place. The Fusion Motto is to be memorized. FUSION ETHOS The Fusion ethos describes the fundamental character and spirit of Fusion. The ethos is the underlying sentiment that informs and influences the beliefs, customs and practices of Fusion Candidates, cadre and alumni. The Fusion Ethos is encapsulated in the following statements and is to be memorized: I will serve the body of Christ I will lead the lost to Christ I will exemplify the life of Christ I will sacrifice my life for the cause of Christ I will go to the nations to proclaim Christ I will always place Christ first! COLUMNS OF FUSION INTEGRITY The core values of Fusion are embedded in the foundation of Be, Know, and Do. BE: Foundational is our identity of being a disciple of Jesus. KNOW: Knowledge of who Jesus is and what he expects of His disciples. DO: We must endeavor to actually obey Jesus, not only to hear Him. 30
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30 Upon the foundation rests five columns which identify and exemplify the Fusion commitment to Christian life and service. These columns stand together and are interdependent. They are the indicators that illustrate a life sold out to Jesus Christ. The Columns are to be memorized. FAITH HONOR LOYALTY COURAGE SACRIFICE 31

Packing List [ FALL AND SPRING ] THE FOLLOWING IS THE REQUIRED PACKING LIST FOR FUSION. Note: many of these items can be purchased from our partner B.A. Outfitters. and should be purchased before Ground School. BOOTS: Due to Fusion’s uniform requirements, Fusion candidates are required to bring at least 1 pair of over-the-ankle hiking boots. There are many models and manufacturers of hiking boots and the choice or model or manufacture is up to you. All boots must be over-the- ankle height. There are also varying prices on boots ranging from $30.00-$200.00. Again, it is your choice what boots you purchase. In Kansas City, we suggest you visit Academy Sports. Otherwise, you can check online or your local sporting goods stores. Here are some good examples: WORDS OF WISDOM For the sake of the student’s health and participation in Fusion training, we want to stress the importance of purchasing a proper pair of boots. Without question, the one most common problem that limits the activities of some candidates during Ground School is a boot that does not fit properly or was not properly broken in. Some students who are prone to blisters would be wise to invest in a comfortable, quality pair of boots. Additionally, it cannot be stressed enough the importance of breaking in your boots. One quick way to do this is to put on the boots, lace them up, go outside and soak them in water, and go on a walk until they’re dry. This sort of exercise will help the boot to form more quickly to your foot. Please do this so that you are not limited in your participation during Ground School. 36
