Welcome to the Blue Collar Bull Sale Welcome to the 15th Annual Blue Collar Bull Sale. The Blue Collar group hopes that all is well with you and your family. Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the dedication and contribution that the Swan Hills Ranch crew has made to the Blue Collar Sale. Scott, Cindy, Martina, Robyn and Parker have been great supporters, members of our group and most importantly our friends. We have been honored and proud to have worked with them over the years. Things change and folks move on. Swan Hills Ranch has decided they would like to change things up in their farm and business world. They have decided to move in a different direction to market their bulls. We appreciate and respect that and wish them all the best. It is our hope that winter has treated you well. The past 12 months have been interesting, challenging and disheartening. The phrases:“The new normal.”, “It is what it is.”, “Our new reality.”… are heard regularly in conversation, in the news and on social media. The struggle for each of us to remain positive, up beat and mentally healthy is very real. However, in agriculture we are experiencing the same as we have every year: harvesting crop, baling, feeding cattle, calving cows, looking after herd health, rebreeding cows…. our normal remains the same. The only masks we wear here are neck warmers or balaclavas to keep the polar vortex from freezing our faces. Not much has changed on the farm work wise. Commodity prices are another story. Grain prices continue to climb to numbers we have not seen in a long while or never seen, the feeder and culled markets are also on the rise. Normal on the farm continues to exist as always. As we approach the spring bull sale season, we have to do consider our breeding programs for our cows. How many bulls do we need? Do we need heifer bulls or cow bulls? What genetics are we interested in? What programs offer what we are looking for with great customer service? What operation offers strong maternal genetics? These questions are ones you will be able to find answers to in this catalogue. We believe we have diverse breeding programs, quality genetics, great cows and a bull to meet your needs. As the Blue Collar Group, we are very proud of our offering and look forward to visiting with you on the phone, at our farms, at Heartland before the sale and on sale day. We will have COVID protocols to follow for our sale. At this point (as of February 23, 2021), we have been told we will be allowed to have 30 people in the sale area during the sale. We plan to have a viewing of the bulls on Thursday afternoon, all day Friday and Saturday. DLMS will have videos and pictures of all the bulls for you to view. Bidding and buying on DLMS, through our sale staff or with Scott and Troy is also possible. Throughout the catalogue you will find an entire host of information to aid you in your bull or heifer selection. There are footnotes, pictures, pedigrees, weights, sire and dam information. Please feel free to contact any one of us for more information or stop by our farms to view the bulls prior to the sale. The Blue Collar Bull Sale Group would like to thank the following for their contribution to the success of our sale: • Everyone who attended last year’s sale, our bidders and buyers. • All our friends and family who helped us before, during and after the sale. • All our sponsors - We do business with all of them and recommend you give them a try, too. • To Castlerock Marketing, Hugh Elliot, Levi Hull and Kyle Prokopetz, the Heartland Staff and all our friends for their work on our sale. We believe that we have a solid and supportive team who can work to make sure that you are well taken care of and your livestock needs are met. Please contact any member of the Blue Collar Group or the sales staff with any questions to help you select the animals to meet your needs. Once again, we are going to start our sale with groups of 3 heifers. Many of these heifers come from bulls that have been purchased from the Bull Collar consignors. Look to increase the productivity of your cow herd with these quality genetics. We would also like to make you aware that Trustmark Agencies from Melville, will be on hand sale day to assist you with the insurance of your purchases. As breeders we will support you, the buyer, in every way we can to ensure our cattle work. However, there are unforeseen events which occur, like illness, injury, or death, which the buyer and seller cannot control or guarantee. For situations like this there is insurance. We strongly recommend you insure all your livestock purchases but want you to ensure any cattle which will be going home to our respective farms for a while. Please refer to the back of the catalogue for all sale conditions. We take pride in the fact that we have an increased number of repeat customers. Please refer to the list of last year’s Blue Collar purchasers at the back of the catalogue. We truly enjoy the connections and socialization which is involved with our customers and the cattle business. We would like to invite you to give us a call or drop by our farms for a visit any time. We would like to welcome you to the 15th Annual Blue Collar Bull Sale. Cattle will be arriving at Heartland on Thursday and may be viewed anytime until sale time. At this point we are not sure if we will be able to provide a meal. Please watch for announcements on this on Facebook or on the CJGX. Feel free to contact Scott or Troy regarding this meal too. Consider this your invitation to come to Heartland in Yorkton on Thursday, April 8th from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Friday, April 9th from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM for a viewing of the cattle and fellowship and to the sale on Saturday, April 10th to view the cattle and for the sale at 1:00 PM. Northern View Angus Well, as I sit down to write this we are just out of a brutal polar vortex and now We are retaining a 1/3 semen into a +6 degree February day. Cows that will lay down and have a calf, get up, nearly lick the hair off the calf and ensure that calf has nursed, are essential here. It is important that these cows are completely manageable before and after calving. Once these cows have calved, they must raise a productive, sound and highly functional animal that can be used as a replacement heifer, breeding bull or, at the end of the day, sell well at the market. You will note that I mention our cows in the footnotes of the bulls. We have been and continue to work on our cow herd’s development. We need great cows to do the job we want. Cows that are just good enough are not good enough. We strive to have cows that are beyond simply good enough. We also strive to utilize the best bulls we can find via AI or with walking bulls. When I select bulls to use, we need adequate scrotal development, calving ease, strong phenotype, ample growth and strong maternal qualities. It is my belief that failing to plan is planning to fail. Consequently, our breeding program is carefully thought out and researched. Matings are thoroughly explored, analyzed and planned. Consequently, we hope to produce top quality seedstock. This year we have Scheifelbein Attractive, Mogck Entice, S A V Thrive, S A V Renovation, Boyd Cartwright, Paintrock Trapper and S A V Resource as AI sires we selected. In addition, we have some very strong herd bulls that have produced some top end bulls in this sale. Our own herd bulls include Super Duty 89F, Compass 108D, Breaking News 9F and Bar CR Innovation. They have produced very competitive progeny. We have really worked on not pushing our bulls. Feeding them a ration of 1% of their body weight in grain/supplement and the balance of their ration with brome, timothy, orchard grass and millet hay. The hay is of excellent quality this year. We monitor the feed intake of our bulls to ensure no overfeeding and to promote a sound growing bull that will work for you for the long term. They have free choice Masterfeeds Maxi lick tubs to promote scrotal development, semen quality and structural soundness. The bulls are raised in large pens and/or pasture areas to allow for ample room to wander, rumble and explore. I have catalogued our bulls in sire groups and in numerical order of when they were born within that group. The oldest bull is first and the youngest bull is last of that sire group. See you soon! Northern View Angus Schiefelbein ATTRACTIVE 4565 Attractive is exactly that. He is known for his great hip, added shape and mass. We are super impressed with his progeny here. His calves have tremendous loin and complete tops and awesome overall balance. His calves have oodles of hair. His registered progeny in Canada has doubled since last year. Attractive’s progeny are becoming increasingly more popular and selling for big dollars throughout North America. If you google Attractive and watch the videos posted there you will see a younger and older version. It is really cool to see the younger Attractive video because the apples don’t fall far from the tree with this sire. Watching the older Attractive video is exciting as we are able to see what his bull calves will look like in the future. The neat thing is he is not just a bull maker sire, his daughters are producing for us now and are great moms with excellent structure, balanced beautiful udders. Northern View Angus MOGCK ENTICE Entice is the long bodied, deep sided, tonnes of rib shape and attractive Enhance son. We used this bull for his phenotypical appeal, impressive curve bending numbers and large scrotal development on his calves. In the Angus breed, Entice is in the top 2% for weaning, top 1% for yearling and top 1% for scrotal development. These are all extremely important boxes that need to be checked for us to use a bull. Entice is known for his outstanding temperament. This is without a doubt exemplified in the gentle nature of his calves at our place. They are extremely easy to work with and halter break. Enigma means something hard to understand or explain, a mystery. Enigma 76H and his brothers are indeed hard to understand or explain, a mystery. Each are born small and lively and then it is incredible how fast and large they grow at weaning and yearling weight time. Enigma 76H gained 4.49lbs/day to weaning putting him in the top 2% for weaning and top 1% for yearling weight in the Angus breed. His dam, Princess 72B has to take some credit for this too. She is from the 92H perennial rockstar cow, Princess 95X, who is the great grandmother to all the Maternal Sister sold to Maria Super Duty calves and the mother to Lot 20. This cow family is outstanding. Their and Hank Franken, Rivers, MB calves have grow, are stylish and structurally sound. The other feature that cannot in the 2020 Keystone be overlooked is the fact that we never have to manage any of their calves. Their Klassic, Brandon, MB calves simply get up and nurse. No fuss kinda cattle. Princess 72B is also an Upward daughter. We have three of them in our herd and they all work here. Enigma 76H is a powerful bull that has tremendous mass but what makes him really cool is the smooth make he has. His shoulders transfer from his body and neck with equal impressiveness. Enigma 76H has a very strong girth and heart girth area. He has tremendous hip, loin, bone and quarter. He his extremely quiet, halter broke and very manageable. On bull picture day this guy was the token pen bull. He was on halter all day and was dragged around the pen to help get photos on the other bulls. Unbelievably quiet critter here. As we all know, at the end of the day cattle are sold by the pound and when you have a bull like Enigma 76H you should have plenty of pounds in his calves. Light birth weight calves that grow like stink, makes this guy extremely desirable for all cattle folks. This bull is one that comes recommended for heifers, but can be used as a cow bull to produce those growthy calves too. Northern View Angus Northern View SUPER DUTY 89F Well, here is a bull that has turned into quite a herd sire in only two breeding seasons. “Neil”, as the kids affectionately named him because of his approachability is very docile and always wants a scratch. He would approach you for a pet even as a calf and still does so as a three-year-old. What makes us so pumped about Neil you ask? 1. His design, structure and phenotype. Neil is a powerful, deep bodied bull. He is nicely headed and smooth built on a very shapely frame. He moves like a cat on his large and powerful foot. When you see Neil, you will notice there isn’t much daylight under him, and that’s ok cause daylight doesn’t pay at the market. 2. His numbers. Neil has been a standout in his numbers from the start. He has a moderate birth EPD of 1.4. Consequently, his calves come out easy but really grow. He has a weaning EPD in the top 6% and a yearling EPD in the top 5% of the Angus breed. Neil has tremendous mass and style. Northern View 3. His dam, Princess 99Z, is an elite dam with the Canadian Angus Association. This cow is a Thunder daughter. We Princess 99Z love our Thunders. You will see them in the Thrive section of the catalogue. They are lights out kinda girls. Princess Dam 99Z has produced five bull calves that averaged 930 lbs. at weaning and 1388 lbs. at yearling. Her bulls are working at Homestead Angus, Youngstown, AB, Venture Farms, Roblin, MB, Russel Vollman, Preeceville, SK and at our place. She has two daughters that averaged 795 lbs. at weaning and 1195 lbs. at yearling. Her first calf sold through the Masterpiece at Agribition to Lock Farms in Macklin. This female has done a great job there. Her other female is in our herd. She had her first calf this spring. This Rainfall heifer calf looks awesome. Princess 99Z has a Renovation bull calf on the ground right now. We are excited to see how he develops. Tibbie 120H 4. His progeny. Neil’s calves come out easy, have lots of vigor and are extremely intelligent. Amy said the smartest calves we have ever had. These calves come out and grow. They possess oodles of style, great depth, have great heads Daughter sold and a beautiful foot. His daughters commanded a lot of attention this fall in our replacement pen and at sales. We to Brewer Acres, offered two daughters to Ashley Kattler at Deep Lake Land and Livestock and she snapped them up saying, “Choosing Melville, SK Northern View as one of the sole sources of Black Angus females has proven to be one of the best decisions we could have made as producers entering the purebred market. The cows are everything you could ask for and Troy and Amy’s attention to functional confirmation is evident in the longevity within their own cow herd. When I picked a pen of 10 replacement heifers, I knew that the Super Duty 89F females were something that I wanted to get my hands on. The bull himself is just really nicely balanced, with a super soft middle, wide top and appealing muscle pattern. His elite dam seals the deal with her impressive ratios. Buy these sons with confidence, they will truly be an investment you won’t regret. ” Another daughter, Tibbie 120H, fetched the high selling price at the Touch of Class in Saskatoon in December. She sold to Brewer Acres of Melville. We anticipate 25-30 Neil calves again this spring. Neil will get another large group of cows to breed this spring, in the neighbourhood of 25% of our cows. They are both out of Thunder sisters from our Elite Dam, Ruth 84S, who is 15 years old and just had a Renovation heifer calf in January and looks like a seven year old cow. She has unbelievable feet, stupendous udder and fabulous depth and thickness. Ruth 84S is never in the back of group of cows to come for feed and is a never miss cow. This type of longevity and consistency has been passed onto her progeny. Northern View Hammer Down 98H is a smooth made and nicely headed bull. His feet are Ruth 88A outstanding. When I look at a bull I start at the back and then move to the top and Dam check out the loin. If those features are solid, I continue on. With this guy I easily continue to see a deep bodied, free and easy moving bull. This bull is very quiet and is halter broke. This bull is excellent on his own but when you add in the maternal strength and his stunning dam you have a really complete package. Ruth 88A is a deep bodied, powerful cow with a wedged front and just an eye-catching presence. This bull started small and simply grew as you can see with his weights as he gained 3.66 lbs. per day. We have a maternal daughter working in our herd and she is doing awesome. Hammer Down 98H will be a bull you will wanna find at the sale. Recommended for heifers. Northern View Angus Lot 25 I know you may think that my footnotes are a bit long winded to this point, but like a person brags up their kids I just have to talk a bit more about this guy. Northern View HAMMER DOWN 101H Extremes in any direction are not part of this bull’s make up. The only extreme I Lot 25 2163760 FTA 101H 24/01/2020 Male would use as an adjective to describe this bull is by saying, Hammer Down 101H is an extremely complete and impressive bull. We have flushed 84S, our first flush ever at Northern View. Our friends at J Square S Angus wanted to get in on BW Adj. 205 Adj. 365 the Ruth train and went in on this flush. We believe in and trust the Ruth cows ACC 80 850 1436 so much that at the Focus on Females Sale this past December we bellied up and purchased a Ruth/Density bred heifer from J Square S Angus for $9,000. She calved and is doing exactly what a Ruth should do for us. This bull is halter broke. Hammer Down 101H has calving ease numbers and design.
