Haveirim Y’karim – Dear Friends – How often do you make it to services? Whether it’s DID YOU KNOW Shabbat, a Festival, or High Holidays – eve or day of – ...that you can reach how frequently do you come to the synagogue to join in Rabbi Rubinger community? on-line? Answers will range from “almost never” to “all the Rabbi@ohevshalom.org time,” and everything in between. And every one of those answers is a good one. Congregation Ohev Shalom Bulletin I know it may seem strange for a rabbi to say that “almost never” is a good Published bi-monthly by Congregation Ohev Shalom answer to the question of how often someone attends a synagogue service. 613 Concourse Parkway South But Ohev Shalom is a diverse community with diverse interests and needs, Maitland, FL 32751 and our job is to meet all of them, if we possibly can. 407-298-4650 • Fax 407-636-4080 Of course, why you come (or don’t come) to services is vitally important to us, too. If you’re an “almost never” – or even “once in awhile” – service- goer because you don’t feel comfortable or engaged or inspired, we want to know about that. Our recently revamped Jewish Life Committee (formerly known as the Ritual Committee) has been hard at work in developing ideas for parallel and alternate services and looking for ways to tweak our existing service formats, if and as needed. Jewish liturgy is a remarkable unifying force. The mat’bei’a shel t’filah (“signet-ring of prayer”), the central core of Jewish prayer, has remained essentially the same for millennia. Because of that, a Jew can walk into a synagogue anywhere in the world, at any time, and be a full participant in the service. No amount of oppression or expulsions have been able to disrupt that. At the same time, from its earliest stages of development, Jewish prayer has had room for innovation, personalization, and evolution. The music of the service, for instance, often reflects the particular region where a community lives. The nusah (musical mode) of Ashkenazic Jews sounds distinctly different than that of Sefardic Jews. Moroccan communities have their own melodies, as do Yemenites and others. Emergent Jewish communities in far-flung parts of the world like South America and Africa bring their own unique flavors. Here in the U.S., contemporary melodies have found their way into the liturgy as well. The core of Jewish prayer may remain essentially unchanged, but we have also been constantly reinventing it all along. What’s more, Jewish prayer can *Past President happen almost anywhere – in a synagogue, to be sure, but also in a park, on MEN’S CLUB PRESIDENT the beach, in someone’s living room.
