Children No sound is more cherished than that of the next generation. Children are always encouraged to participate in the main sanctuary’s services. Parents should feel free to make use of our childcare options on the 2nd floor as they see fit. Toys Just as adults are turning off their smartphones, we ask that electronic children’s toys and colouring materials stay out of the main sanctuary. The childcare rooms on the 2nd floor are stocked with games and activities for your children’s use. Of course, children are welcome to bring puzzles, books, stuffed animals and the like into the main sanctuary. Sanctifying Space You are encouraged to pace yourself throughout services and attend as you see fit. Please make every effort to keep the main sanctuary doors closed after entering and exiting the sanctuary so those in services will not be distracted by outside noise. And finally, the High Holidays are an especially auspicious time to connect with others and build community. Greet newcomers or introduce yourself if you are new to the Shaar. Security for High Holy Days On High Holy Days additional security are provided on contract by the Halifax Regional Police force in the form of uniformed officers on the street. Additionally, volunteer ushers and ticket takers are positioned inside both exterior doors whose job it is to take attendees’ tickets. The exterior doors are not locked during High Holy Day services and the role of greeter is shared between the Caretaker and the volunteers. 6
New Year’s Greetings from our Rabbi While I’ve only been living and working in Halifax a few weeks, I already feel like I’m part of the family — the Shaar mishpaḥah. There are many, many people I could thank for their help and warm welcome, but I’ll leave that for another time. Instead, I note here that the fall is the season of new beginnings, of a new Jewish year, Rosh haShanah. In fact, the Mishnah*, that collection of law and wisdom dating from the turn of the third century CE that is the basis of the Talmud (and therefore, much of subsequent Jewish teaching), posits that there is not just one but no fewer than four “New Years” days: The first of Nisan in the late spring, the first of Elul in summer, in Shevat (early spring), and our autumn Rosh haShanah in Tishrei. There are many beginnings, and Rosh haShanah has been our people’s civil New Year for millennia. Conveniently, it is the start of the school (and shul) year as well. All beginnings are at the same time exciting and scary, overwhelming and pregnant with possibilities. On the Yamim haNora’im (the “Days of Awe”) we sit up and take notice of the lives we lead, the values we profess and live, and our relationships with others and with God. We think of our future as individuals, families, and a united community. For the Shaar Shalom kehillah, the New Year (and new decade to boot!) of 5780 is all this, especially since at this time we also transition to a change in religious leadership. My hope and prayer at this time is that together we move thought- fully and caringly, boldly and respectfully, intentionally and piously into the year and the years ahead. 7
Again, I thank the entire Shaar community for entrusting me with the privilege of rabbinic leadership. Rabbi Gary Karlin * appropriately, in the tractate of Rosh haShanah, Chapter 1, Mishnah 1. About our Rabbi: Shaar Shalom Congregation will celebrate the beginning of the Jewish year 5780 with our new spiritual leader, Rabbi Gary Karlin. Before coming to the Shaar, Rabbi Karlin served as a congregational rabbi, a day school Rabbi-In-Residence, a teacher, a graduate school Adjunct Instructor, and a curriculum writer, translator and editor. His educational publications include the Hebrew High School curriculum Who Wrote the Bible? (IJE/Brandeis University), and a new curriculum on the book of Jonah (MaToK/Schechter/JTS). Rabbi Karlin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (BA), and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he also earned an MA. In addition, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by that school, where he is a doctoral candidate in the School of Education of JTS (ABD). In his spare time he enjoys reading, listening to music, playing guitar, cooking, and spending as much time as he can with his children, his Ontario-born daughter, Michal, a recent graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts of Rutgers University in New Jersey, and son Moshe, a rising sophomore at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. Please reach out by telephone, email, or in person to introduce yourself to Rabbi Karlin. He is eager to meet everyone in the Shaar community. 8
Greetings from the Chair of the Executive Committee Dear Members, This has been a year of change and growth. A year of transitions. Rosh Hashana is a time to reflect on our growth and how we wish to move forward. Change can be challenging but can also bring about a wealth of opportunity. For the first time, the combined Halifax Hebrew School was held entirely at the Shaar this year, and the halls were noisier. We navigated the sharing of common areas, and while this has had its ups and downs, I admit to smiling every time I see kids running the halls of our shul. It is a reminder that we collectively raise the next generation of Jews to occupy and love this space and our traditions. We said goodbye to Rabbi Weiss and Rabbi Rank, who accomplished a great many things in our congregation and touched many people through their initiatives and strong pastoral care over the last three years. It was truly heartwarming to see how our community came together to support them not only throughout their time here but also in the last year as they prepared for, and worked through, the difficulties of the first few months with little Meital. We look forward to nurturing the seeds they have planted and wish them all the best in all their future endeavours. We also said goodbye to our caretaker Alan Doyle, who retired during the year. We wish him the best and thank him for all the care he put into both the building and the community. We now welcome Luba Kuzmicheva as our new caretaker under a different model. In our efforts to meet our community’s needs, we have expanded the shul’s hours to give members evening access for meetings and committee organizing, and to increase our potential for programming. In the year leading up to hiring her as caretaker, Luba 9
had been working for kosher caterers in the shul and had been providing supplemental cleaning services when the Hebrew School moved to our building. These prior experiences with us helped make her transition go smoothly, and we are grateful to those community members who have been involved in meeting with her on house- related matters. We know how lucky we are to have Tamara Daiman, our rock of consistency in the office. Regarding our rabbinical search, it was amazing to see such a high level of engagement among members: we are a community with diverse needs, yet we were able to narrow down the things that are truly important to us all. We held three town hall community meetings and another online for those unable to make the dates; they were well attended, and I am bolstered by how meaningful it is to engage in important dialogue within our community. Sometimes the seeking is as important as the finding, and I hope that, through the process, we as a Shaar family have learned more about ourselves— what we need and what we want. We welcomed Rabbi Karlin with food and participation. Thank you for your efforts as we transition to new spiritual leadership. There have been many offers of support: to cook collectively in our kitchen; to host him in our homes; to attend services and teaching sessions. These are appreciated so very much. There was overwhelming support for him as a candidate and, despite the business of summer, member involvement in the running of the shul and participation in learning and activities has continued to be strong. We are excited to see where this next year takes us under Rabbi Karlin’s spiritual guidance. He has many ideas about how to help us grow. I want to sincerely thank all of those who chair, run and participate in various committees. We need you! As an organization with few paid staff, we rely on volunteers to ensure our shul functions efficiently. This happens on many levels and in many realms: financially, socially, ritually, and administratively. There are many ways to get involved and many hands make light work, and we 10
encourage you to get involved in the areas you want to see thrive. Jump in; the water’s fine! Thank you to the Gabbaim, and all of those who serve on the following committees: Ritual, House, Gift Shop, Kitchen, Cemetery, Chevra Kadisha, Simon Gaum Bereavement, Education, Library, Book Club, Yard Sale, The High Holiday Bulletin, Tikkun Olam, Finance, Capital and the Board of Directors. You give countless hours to our community and we could not function without you. Thank you to those who organize, lead and participate in services at the Shaar. Your Divrei Torah, Haftorah and Torah readings have been beautiful. You bring meaning to our community. Thank you to those who have attended talks, the Saul Green Lecture, the Shaar-Dalhousie lecture, Chai Mitzvah, NaKh and Nosh, Tea and Torah, and Breakfast Clubs. You enrich our community through learning. Thank you to those who have cooked and baked for those in need, cared for and visited the sick, showed up for minyan and shiva and milestones of all kinds. You create a caring community that makes the Shaar something we want to be a part of. May we go from strength to strength. We hope you help us build even more in this next year by getting involved in the aspects of Shaar life that you are most passionate about. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year. Shana Tova U’Metukah. Joanna Wexler, Chair, Executive Committee 11

Simon Gaum Bereavement Centre Sue David Karen Gaum Lesley Gaum-Bercovici Nancy Cieplinski Molly Rechnitzer Susan Strug The Simon L. Gaum Bereavement Centre The Simon L. Gaum Bereavement Centre at Shaar Shalom Congregation was established in 2007 by Karen, Lesley and Jennifer Gaum in memory of their beloved husband and father, Simon Gaum. As a result of their experiences in dealing with what was required after the loss of a loved one, they saw the need for an organized method of providing families the information needed and steps to take immediately after a death and throughout the Shiva period. The purpose of the Centre is to help congregational families going through a loss by providing them with guidance and support. The Centre provides the family with an Information Handout which includes detailed information on such things as: contact names and phone numbers, the death certificate process, funeral home contact and arrangements, obituary arrangements, and support services that might be needed. The Centre purchases and maintains Shiva supplies including chairs, prayer books, kippot, tallit, and tefillin. The Bereavement Centre ensures these supplies are brought to the Shiva house. The Centre also sends a basket containing assorted kosher food items and a yarzheit candle to congregational families who have lost an immediate family member and who are sitting Shiva locally. 14
The Centre also sends a basket containing assorted kosher food items and a yarzheit candle to congregational families who have lost an immediate family member and who are sitting Shiva locally. The Bereavement Centre members who served during this past year are: Sue David, Karen Gaum, Lesley Gaum-Bercovici, Nancy Cieplinski, Molly Rechnitzer, Susan Strug and Rabbi Raysh Weiss. Some highlights of the Bereavement Centre’s activities over the past year include: 1. Revision and updating of the Information Handout. 2. Purchasing of additional Shiva prayer books. 3. Putting book plate labels in the Shiva prayer books. 4. Liaising with the funeral home about Shiva supplies. 5. Entering into an arrangement with Sweet Jane’s to provide and deliver the Shiva baskets. 6. Finding resource personnel for those requiring support services. 7. Special Projects: The Bereavement Centre has plans to fund a project(s) for the Cemetery. A list of priority projects have been identified and are currently being investigated. Details will follow when available. Donations are always welcomed and appreciated so that the Bereavement Centre can continue its important work. Donations can be made in honour of, or in memory of, a loved one. To donate, please visit the Synagogue website and click on the “Donate Now!” tab. Designate your donation amount to the “Simon L. Gaum Bereavement Centre”. If you would like to volunteer to join the Bereavement Centre committee or would like additional information, contact Sue David at 902-445-4735. 15
Esther and Morris Strug Memorial Garden זכור לעולם Featured on the cover at the dedication on Sunday, July 21, 2019 A generous donation from the Strug family made it possible to construct a permanent, covered, and landscaped seating area (with ritual wash station) in the Shaar Shalom Cemetery. The "Esther and Morris Strug Memorial Garden" remembers forever - זכור לעולם- two founding members of the Shaar Shalom. The beautiful seating area is nestled under a tree and overlooks the final resting place of many of our founding members as well as those who have been part of the Shaar community since. The Strug Family gathered on Sunday morning, July 21st to dedicate the garden in memory of Esther and Morris Strug, Holocaust survivors who came to Halifax with their two sons, Willard and Joseph, after World War II. Their third son, Stanley, was born in Halifax. Settling in a new country after losing their families in the Holocaust was not easy, but Esther and Morris were determined to make a better life for their sons. Their first home was a one room apartment and they struggled to raise a young family while running a grocery store. Through their hard work and tenacity, they went from poverty to affluence when in the early 1960s Morris turned his attention to construction. He became a real estate developer and owner, a profession he enjoyed until his death. But Esther and Morris never forgot their struggles and when they were able, they gave back to the community in many ways. Morris lost his beloved wife, Esther, in 2002 and his son, Joseph, in 2016, but when Morris passed away in 2018, he and Esther left behind a large family: Willard (Annette), Stanley (Cindy Robertson), and Susan (wife of Joseph) along with nine grandchildren [Jeff (Robin) Strug, Lowell (Elyssa) Strug, Lisa Strug (Andrew Murray), Stephanie Strug, Morgan Strug, David Strug, Matthew Strug, Jennifer Alternino, and Jason (Viv) Strug], and eleven great-grandchildren. 16

In Memoriam As the High Holidays approach, we reflect on those members we lost over the past year. Dr. Leonard Stanley Goldberg November 25, 1918 – May 7, 2019 A lifelong resident of Halifax, Leonard graduated from Dalhousie Dental School in 1941 and immediately enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Dental Corps where he was stationed in England. Following the war, he practiced Dentistry in Halifax. He and his beloved wife, Miriam, were founding members of the Shaar Shalom and dedicated Shabbat morning attendees. He loved sailing the waters around Halifax Harbor and spending time with family and friends. In June 2018, Leonard and Miriam celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary and in November 2018, he celebrated this 100th birthday. Kenneth (Ken) William Offman June 3, 1938 – March 23, 2019 Ken was the son of Shaar Shalom founding members, Henry and Freda Offman. He lived his entire life in Halifax, working in construction, running convenience stores, and driving a taxi. He had a natural talent for making friends. He always had time to talk and was genuinely interested in getting to know people. He was a regular at Shabbat services, where he greeted everyone with his wonderful smile. Anyone who knew Ken knows about his passion for cars, but when asked, it was his family that meant everything to Ken. 27
Mark Neil Offman January 29, 1947 – September 23, 2018 Mark was the son of Shaar Shalom founding members, Saul and Lillian Offman, and celebrated his bar mitzvah at the Shaar. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a Commerce degree and was a member of TEP (Tau Epsilon Phi), a fraternity that accepted all religions and ethnicities and was a gathering place for Jewish university students in the legendary 1960s. Mark was an amazing athlete and was well-known for his strong right arm on the football pitch. His love of sports made him a life-long fan, but his true passion was his family and friends. Dr. Alex Richman January 23, 1929 – January 29, 2019 When Alex and Shifra Richman moved to Halifax in 1978, Alex was already a psychiatrist with a long list of accomplishments and research in the mental health field. At Dalhousie University, he was a psychiatrist and professor of epidemiology specializing in applying epidemiology to planning and evaluating mental health services. In 1994, Alex and Shifa’s son, David, did not survive the crash of US Air Flight 1493 in Los Angeles. They transformed their grief and frustration with the factors that led to this tragedy into a determination to make air travel safer. And they did just that. They founded AlgoPlus, applying the same research techniques used in mental health services to aviation safety. The significance of this accomplishment is detailed in a recent article by Stephen Kimber (http://stephenkimber.com/alex-richman-r-i-p/). Alex never retired – he worked on projects and published until his death. His intellectual longevity was only surpassed by his humour, his smile and his devotion to his family. Alex and Shifra celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in September 2018 and Alex celebrated his 90th birthday just 6 days before his death. 28
Our Trees of Life Our Trees of Life mounted on the outer walls of the Sanctuary and the Chapel help us maintain a connection to our past as they honour life cycle events of present and former congregants. For many years, Molly Rechnitzer was responsible for selling leaves and foundation stones. Thanks to her enthusiastic leadership, the Tree of Life mounted on the outer wall of the Sanctuary filled up! Undaunted, Molly found a talented metal artist to design and fabricate a new tree, which was generously sponsored by Michael Argand and Jim Spatz in honour of their parents: Gordon and Rose Argand, and Riva and Simon Spatz. About the Artist The new tree was designed by Brodie McGruer in 2008. The picture below shows Brodie standing by his sculpture just after it was mounted on the outer wall of the Chapel. Brodie was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, but after graduating from the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, British Columbia, he 29
moved to Nova Scotia where he was the first scenic carpenter at Neptune Theatre. In 2002 he began his studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating in April 2006 with a double major in Jewelry and Fine Art (Sculpture) and a minor in Art History. Brodie continues to make unique jewelry and sculpture and is the owner of Snarling Iron in his hometown of Owen Sound. About the Tree and Its Design The new tree of life was designed to have an organic feel. The branches were cut from flat copper sheet and hand hammered into their final form. They were then joined to each other and to the trunk to form the completed tree. Brodie endeavored to make the branches flow as naturally as possible while maintaining a recognizable familiarity with the Hebrew Script. The hand riveted joints in the tree also act as indicators of the ends of the individual characters. The copper was not lacquered so it has intentionally darkened over the years complementing by the deep reddish brown of the background wood (maple veneer and pine trim). About the Leaves and Stones Each brass leaf was hand cut and lacquered so the leaves maintain their original colour. They are attached to the acrylic canopy in a systematic, organic array. At the base of the tree are the foundation stones, which Brodie cut individually from a beautiful grey-brown marble. They are there to support the tree and give it strength. 30

“Imagining Better Health Care: Can counterfactual (“what if...”) learning by analogy from the bible help?” Wednesday, October 23, 2019, 7PM Alumni Hall, University of King’s College The Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture addresses the intersection of Judaism, medicine and humanitarianism, all three of which Dr. Green was passionate about in his lifetime. The lecture focuses on complex humanistic and ethical challenges. The lectureship is endowed by a gift from the Green family to honour the memory of Dr. Saul Green and to inspire and knit together the congregation of Shaar Shalom Synagogue and the community of Halifax. The lectureship partners are Shaar Shalom Synagogue and the University of King's College. This year’s lecture will be presented by Dr. Abraham (Rami) Rudnick, a psychiatrist and philosopher. Dr. Rudnick is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and School of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University and the Clinical Director of the Nova Scotia Operational Stress Injury Clinic. He is a Canadian Certified Physician Executive, the Editor- in-Chief of the International Journal of Mental Health, and a recipient of many national and international awards. Dr. Rudnick’s lecture will examine some promising aspects of creative and critical thinking such as learning from counterfactuals (using what if… examples) and learning by analogy (using similar issues in other areas of life). While these have not been sufficiently applied in health care, he will demonstrate how examples from the bible can be used to consider health care transformation in Canada. For example, Abraham’s decision making to sacrifice his son will be used to argue for transformation in forensic psychiatry. Noah’s process for selecting animals for the Ark will be used to argue for transformation in health care funding. 33
