Significant fundraising work by our P&C volunteers, well supported by the broader school community, will see six new cubby houses installed during term 4. While last year’s Colour Run was a major fundraiser, various other events and initiatives have contributed to the total funds. The bottom playground re- development has been a priority for the last few years, with the landscaping and levelling completed as the first phase of the project. The six cubby houses, grouped together, will create a villages-style environment where our younger students can engage in creative play and make- believe. With a variety of cubby house designs on offer, we asked the students to determine their preferred options. The final choices are listed below: • Colour-Run Cafe • P&C Ice Cream Stall • The Floraville Market • Police Station • Wandakalua (Awbakal welcome sign for the larger cubby house) • Sandpit Kitchen A sample of products can be viewed at https://www.castleandcubby.com.au/ Facebook Live: Kindergarten Information Session Due to the current health restrictions we’re taking a virtual approach to this year’s Kindergarten Information Session. Join us at 7:00pm tonight for a live broadcast with a new kinder video and the opportunity to ask questions. Our plans for kindergarten orientation in term 4 will be finalised when the updated health advice is provided during the school holidays. https://www.facebook.com/floravillepublicschool/posts/1172402126449134 To provide excellence & equity in education, empowering students as creative, confident learners and active, informed citizens

Simon Mulready | Principal LIBRARY NEWS Book Week Our Book Week celebrations will be held next week with the Book Fair opening on Tuesday 22nd September and our Book Character Parade on Wednesday 23rd September. For details, please refer to the school website https://floraville- p.schools.nsw.gov.au/school-notes.html - look for ‘Notes 2020’ and click on the ‘Book Week Note 2020’. If you have any questions regarding Book Week, please contact Mrs Southward. Louise.Southward@det.nsw.edu.au Book Fair As part of our Book Week celebrations, we will also be holding a book fair. It will be open on Tuesday 22nd September (day before the parade) with class groups visiting the library to purchase books. For those who miss an opportunity to purchase on this day, the Book Fair will also be open for limited times on Wednesday and Thursday. Due to current COVID restrictions, we will be unable to have parents/grandparents/friends visiting the book fair. Also, we won’t be able to accept any cash payments for items. All purchases will need to be paid for online prior to the day. How will this work? 1. Students will be given the opportunity to create a wish list while previewing the book fair on the Friday or Monday prior to Book Week. 2. Students bring this wish list home to discuss the possibility of purchasing any of the items. 3. Payments will need to be made via the website www.scholastic.com.au 4. Record of the payment will need to be recorded on the back of the wish list, including the receipt number and amount paid. 5. Students bring this record to the book fair and purchase items using this record of payment. 6. A virtual viewing of the book fair will also be created for you to view from home. Although this new format for a Book Fair isn’t ideal, we will just make the best of an unprecedented situation.

OTHER NEWS Year 3 Reading and Numeracy Check-in Assessments Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in a new reading and numeracy check-in assessment during Term 3, 2020. The check- in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy initiative to support schools in assessing and monitoring Year 3 and Year 5 student learning following the period of learning from home. Year 5 have already sat their assessments and Year 3 will complete their assessments next week, starting on Monday. Students are asked to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer to enable them to hear the audio component of the assessment. Due to current regulations we are unable to share or use school headphones. The type of computer connection needed is a headphone jack or USB port. (Headphones were not included in the Bookpacks this year, as a way of reducing the cost). Aerobics update This week, our 5 Aerobics teams will be filming their routines to send away as part of their 2020 online FISAF competition. All teams have been training hard under the guidance of Nicole and Ella from the Ultimate Beat. They have been training in Stage groups, preparing for their FISAF competition which is online this year. The teams will be filming their routines during their morning and lunchtime training sessions. We wish our teams good luck as they adapt to the changes of 2020! Miss Brindley

Please: • monitor the school website; • check the digital sign at the front of the school; • regularly check the school Facebook page; and • ensure that your correct email and postage address is on file at the front office. 1⃣ VIDEO PRESENTATIONS We are in the process of producing a number of short videos to assist students and parents to become familiar with our school grounds, teachers, classrooms and buddies. Keep a close lookout for a “Welcome to Kindergarten” video for children, from September 14th. Please watch these short presentations with your child and discuss any questions that might arise. 2⃣ FACEBOOK LIVE 16 SEPT This year we will hold a live broadcast for parents on Wednesday 16th September. This will be on Facebook Live and details will be advertised via the above forms of communication. 3⃣ UNIFORM SHOP - NEW PROCESS • Due to health regulations surrounding Covid-19, our system for ordering school uniforms has been modified for Kindergarten 2021. Parents have the option of bringing their child to the uniform shop at a specified time, to check for sizing. However, children will be unable to try on the garments due to the current health guidelines. Our volunteers will be available to help you with selection. Our school has organised an online booking system through schoolinterviews.com.au This process allows you to choose a time that suits you and your family requirements. • To book a 15-minute timeslot at the uniform shop, please visit schoolinterviews.com.au and reserve a time. You will need to enter the code: r2wu4 on the website (in the green part). Follow the prompts, fill in your details and schedule a time that is convenient for you. If you supply your email address, you will receive an email confirming the day and time. You can secure your chosen time now. This process is designed to conform to all health guidelines in schools and we kindly request that you follow all regulations whilst on our school site. Additional information has been sent to our Kindergarten 2021 families. Please tag any Kinder 2021 in the comments to make sure they are aware of this update. If you need any assistance, please contact the school office on 4945 4845. WAKING UP TO WASTE A huge shout out to all of the primary volunteers who helped with the waste audit last Thursday! The waste in the pictures below was from 1st break only. Here are some of the facts we discovered: We threw away more pieces of rubbish than the amount of students in the school. There were whole sandwiches, bread rolls, drinks from the canteen and yoghurts untouched and unopened in bins from infants and primary. Lots of recyclable waste is going to landfill. We counted 215 soft plastic chip packets that will take 1000 years to break down in this one lunchtime alone. Floraville is full of children who are willing to get their hands dirty and change their habits because they care! ‼EXCITING NEWS‼ In Term 4 we will be introducing a new waste system which will see full composting of food waste, bottle/can recycling, paper, foil and hard plastic recycling and hopefully a huge reduction in the amount of waste we are sending to landfill. ⁉HOW CAN YOU HELP⁉ It would be wonderful if families could take up the challenge of packing 1 less single use plastic item in their lunchboxes each day. Together we can make a huge difference Mrs Hadden, Mrs McSweeny & Mrs O’Neill | School Environmental Team
