SECTION 1: FACILITY SAFETY PLANS The following operational guidelines from the Texas Education Agency were taken into consideration in the development of our campus safety plan: All instruction should be held in spaces that allow desks to be placed at least six feet apart when feasible. If more than one group is using a shared space that is large enough to allow for students in all groups and their respective desks to be six feet apart, then multiple groups of individuals can be in the space together. However, each group must be separated from the other by an empty space of at least 30 feet when feasible. All students will be seated facing forward when feasible. The groups should not combine for activities at any time. (i.e. Two groups of ten students and one teacher can meet at the opposite ends of a cafeteria, if students can all be seated at least six feet apart; three groups of 11 students can meet in a large gymnasium, separated by 30 feet, with one teacher circulating between the groups to support online learning; and other options are also possible, so long as they meet the requirements for distancing when feasible.) Whenever possible and developmentally appropriate, there should be no group or pairs working together that would require students to regularly interact within six feet, recognizing that this is not possible for early childhood students and some students with disabilities. Students must not be brought together in assemblies, field trips, or other group gatherings outside of their class group, unless the distancing of 30 feet between groups can be maintained. Campus and Classroom Capacity The campus has designated classrooms (see Classroom Layout) that will allow for the practice of social distancing and minimize interactions of large groups if feasible All students will remain in self‐contained classrooms in order to create a standard classroom that accommodates social distancing and small group learning. If students are in departmentalized schedules, teachers will rotate to the classrooms and the students will remain in their small group classrooms. Students that are medically fragile or have individualized needs will have specific plans created to ensure safety within parameters that are created specifically for the student by the ARD Committee. 3
Classroom Layout The following images demonstrate a possible layout for students in a face to face setting if feasible: Entrances and Exits Entrances and exits have been designated to create clear pathways and avoid the congregation of large groups. Entrance and exit points are identified as the following: Main Entrance: All staff members will enter the main entrance after they have completed their electronic self‐screening using the COVID‐19 Screener. Social distancing is expected at front entrance. Signs are posted to clearly define where to wait in order to engage in social distancing. Side of School: Car Drop‐Off at 6:45 AM and Car Pick‐Up between 2:45‐ 3:00 PM for families with students in multiple grade levels Circle Drive: Bus riders that arrive between 6:45‐7:30 AM Entrance front of school: Walkers and car drop‐off after 7:30 AM and car pick‐up after 3:00 PM. Rear exits: No entrance allowed through these exits. Health Holding Areas When a student or staff member develops any symptoms of illness consistent with COVID‐19 (i.e., new onset or worsening cough OR shortness of breath OR at least two of the following symptoms: fever of 100.0°F, chills, muscle ache, headache, sore throat, loss 4
of taste or smell), the following general precautions will be taken: The student will be removed from the classroom immediately, assessed by the school nurse who will contact the parent/guardian to notify them of symptoms exhibited and the reentry procedure for student’s return to campus. Isolation rooms have been identified in the event a student or staff member becomes ill during the school day. A campus designee will facilitate the movement of the other students in the class to a new space in order to allow the contaminated room to be closed off and sanitized using district cleaning protocols. A campus designee will monitor student or staff member and follow the following protocol: o Maintain six feet social distancing o Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including facial mask and gloves o Close off the designated area o Follow disinfecting protocols immediately Safety Signage Safety signage will be posted throughout the interior and exterior of the building reminding staff and students to follow safety guidelines including social distancing and handwashing. Examples of signage: 5
Sanitizing Stations Sanitizing stations and health check‐in stations will be located at the designated entrances and exits in order to create and support consistent pathways that avoid the congregation of large groups. Teachers, staff and families should self‐screen before coming to campus by using the COVID‐19 Screener or the QR Code located at the front entrance of the school. If any risk factors are present in the self‐screen process, the individual should stay home and report risks to the campus. Students and staff members are asked to report any symptoms that occur during the school day or several hours after leaving the campus. Hand sanitizer will be located at the front entrance and will be required to be used by all. Health Check‐In for Employees Electronic health screenings will be provided daily through the COVID‐19 Screener. Employees who do not pass the self‐screening will be identified to campus administration and will not be allowed on the campus. Employees who do not pass the self‐screening will need to contact Employee Services representative for next steps. Hallways – Flow of Traffic Designated pathways have been determined based on the flow of traffic and in alignment with our entrance and exit areas. Please see our campus maps for specificity. Students and staff will walk along the right side of each hallway. Designated signs and markings will be posted along each hallway that indicate areas where students must stand. Restrooms th Restroom breaks are built into the daily schedule for Pre‐Kinder through 5 grade. There are designated restrooms (see campus map) for students in order to provide clear pathways to avoid congregation. Every classroom teacher must be aware of other classes in the hallway prior to taking class for restroom breaks. Restrooms will be cleaned every two hours with touch‐ups throughout the day. 6
SECTION 2: DAILY SAFETY PLANS Our daily safety plans will provide guidance for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting our school in order to minimize and control the spread of illness and disease. Cleaning Protocols There are three lines of defense to decrease the spread of pathogens in the school environment: Personal hygiene Regular cleaning procedures Proper disinfection and sanitizing procedures Personal Hygiene, Cleaning, Disinfections Cleaning‐ Removes germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using soap (or detergent) and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection (CDC, 2016). Disinfecting ‐ Kills germs on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection (CDC, 2016). Sanitizing ‐ Lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces or objects to lower the risk of spreading infection (CDC, 2016). Personal Hygiene‐ The spread of pathogens can be minimized in schools by employing good personal hygiene, regular cleaning and the proper use of disinfectants. The use of good personal hygiene by students, staff and visitors can greatly reduce the spread of pathogens in the school. Proper handwashing hygiene and sanitization. All building occupants will have access to adequate soap, water and drying mechanisms (paper towels). Adequate training and signage on proper handwashing techniques are posted throughout the school. Handwashing will be monitored by supervising staff. In addition, sanitization stations will be placed inside of classrooms. 8
Custodians, Teachers, Office Staff & Administration Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Routine cleaning and disinfecting are key to maintaining a safe environment for faculty, students, and staff. Cleaning removes dirt and most germs and is usually done with soap and water. Disinfecting kills most germs, depending on the type of chemical, and only when the chemical product is used as directed on the label. Routine Cleaning and Disinfecting The following areas will be cleaned after every use: Shared Computers Shared Phone Countertops Copy machines All shared devices will have signage posted to remind users of protocols for handwashing and sanitizing. The following areas will be cleaned at least every two hours with touch‐ups in between: Door knobs and handles Stair rails/handrails Light switches Push buttons on vending machines Restrooms The following areas will be cleaned before and after meals: Tables Desks Chairs The following areas will be cleaned at the end of each session: Student desks and chair Student devices Student work spaces Classroom furniture The risk of getting COVID‐19 from cleaning is low. The following are general precautions for cleaning staff, given that community transmission of COVID‐19 is occurring: 9
Staff should not touch their face while cleaning. After gloves are removed, cleaning staff should thoroughly wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Staff who are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting will receive proper training regarding the use of disinfectants in a safe and effective manner and how to safely clean up potentially infectious materials and body fluids – blood, vomit, feces, and urine. Classroom Procedures All staff members will be expected to adhere to the CDC guidelines for social distancing in the classroom. Such procedures will include: Students and teacher will remain in classroom to create a small learning environment that allows for social distancing. Students will sanitize their hands prior to entry into classroom. Students will enter one at a time into their classroom. Students will sit at their assigned desk/table/chair. Students will wash their hands prior to eating a meal and after eating a meal. Students will sanitize their hands prior to exiting the classroom. Meal Distribution During remote learning, students will receive breakfast and lunch via curbside pickup at the campus. If in a face to face environment, breakfast and lunch will be served and consumed in the student’s classroom. Safe Training for Staff and Students Training will be provided to students and staff in the proper use of facial masks, six‐feet social distancing guidelines and the importance of not sharing drinks, cups, food and paper towels etc. Student and Employee Safety Expectations The following expectations should be followed and modeled by all employees and students: Complete COVID‐19 Screener prior to entering the school building All staff members and students in Grade 4 and above must wear a face mask. 10
Hand sanitizer is to be used frequently throughout the day. Students/Employees must wash hands for 20 seconds after meals and restroom use. Student Drop‐Off/Pick‐Up Procedures Parents must wait outside of the building during drop‐off and pick‐up while maintaining six feet social distancing protocol. Entry to common areas or classrooms will not be allowed. If you need to pick‐up your child early, we ask that you contact the campus at (210) 637‐4890 to inform them so that they can get your child ready. Upon arrival, parents will wait outside the Front Entrance and sign out child. Staggered dismissals beginning with upper grades will be conducted. o Walkers will exit the Front Entrance at staggered times and wait across the street for younger siblings. o Pre‐Kinder ‐5th grade pick‐up will be at Side of School near Gym (must have visible signage of student name for Pre‐Kinder/Kindergarten) o Bus riders will exit the Front Entrance at staggered times. A designated location for late pick‐ups will meet safe distancing requirements. Any students not picked up on time will be held for late pick up in the following locations: o Pre‐Kinder and Kindergarten students: Library o 1st‐ 3rd grade: Cafeteria o 4th‐ 5th grade: Main Hallway Upon arrival, parents will wait outside the Front Entrance and sign out child. Visitors All visitor access will require clearance by the campus principal or designee prior to arrival. For the most part, no visitors will be allowed on campus. Parents will be asked to adhere to the following guidelines: The parent/visitor must call the school at (210) 637‐4890 prior to arriving at the campus and identify the reason for the visit. All visitors will be required to complete COVID‐19 screener questions. Visitors will not be allowed in the building. The School Nurse will notify the Front Office if a parent is expected due to an illness. All parent and visitor requests for conferences will occur virtually or via telephone. 11
SECTION 3: STUDENT LEARNING AND SCHEDULING 2020‐2021 School Calendar 12
Learning Platforms The two learning platforms that are offered at our campus are as follows: Face‐to‐Face Instruction – Students attend school daily, as with the regular school year, and follow safety, sanitation, and social distancing expectations. If this option is selected, there may be times that students must transition to remote learning due to mandatory stay at home orders from campus administration or local health authorities. Remote Learning – Students participate in classroom instruction via remote learning and are expected to complete and submit assignments as communicated by the virtual learning teacher(s). This home‐learning model is an extension of the classroom and includes the same high‐level expectations for participation and assignments as face‐to‐face. This option has synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Synchronous instruction requires a student to log in at a specific time to interact with the teacher; whereas asynchronous instruction involves pre‐recorded lessons that the student can access at any time of the day. Schedules Daily campus schedules will be provided for each grade level to their families. These are sample schedules that will be updated with final schedules for parents. Pre‐Kinder 13
Kindergarten 1st & 2nd Grade 14
3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Learning on Campus Students will remain in self‐contained classrooms. All students will face the same direction during instruction. Students will use an electronic device as a means of demonstrating learning and manipulating content. Students will avoid face to face group work, but will be able to meet virtually for any group assignments or projects Although in‐person field trips will not be allowed, we will look for opportunities for students to engage in virtual field trips. At this time, there will be no playground access or unstructured physical activity in order to maintain safety for all. Recess will take place in the form of teacher led activities or brain breaks that will occur in small, organized groups using approved sources such as https://www.gonoodle.com/. 15
