No. 8 24th March 2021 Week 8, Term 1 2021 Kia ora and welcome to this week’s newsletter. CELEBRATING LEARNING & ACHIEVEMENT Week 8 of the term is a busy one! We started the week with a group of learners attending the Eye on Nature event at the Botanic Gardens. They participated in environmentally based workshops and have returned to school with new knowledge and understandings of our environment and associated responsibilities. On Tuesday afternoon the 2021 leadership announcements were made - always a highlight for our senior learners! We would like to congratulate all those who were successful and to thank those who put their names forward - we are proud of you all! Unfortunately we did not have positions for everyone due to the incredible amount of applications. A full list of our 2021 leaders can be found below. Later this week some of our learners will be participating in a Football Fun day where they will get to put their football skills to the test as they compete against other schools in our area. We hope you all have a fantastic time!
Our Intermediates returned from camp on Friday afternoon looking thoroughly exhausted but very happy after a fun and challenging week. We would like to thank the amazing group of parents who volunteered their time to attend camp. Their enthusiasm and encouragement went a long way to ensuring the camp's success. Thank you also to Mrs Sutton and Mr Glover who organised this superbly run camp for our learners. We are very excited to announce that our brand new Junior Playground is due to be installed next week! All going to plan, the playground will be ready for our learners upon their return from the Easter break. The Senior Playground is also receiving some updates at the same time. We look forward to sharing progress pictures with you. Good News Call of the Week: Congratulations to Ava M our Good News Call of the Week! Ava has been working so hard on her learning and has been using Habits of Mind strategies to help her succeed. As a result, Ava is making fantastic progress. Last week she shared with me some very tricky maths she was solving and she scored 10 out of 10 in her spelling test! Thank you Ava for being a role model of our values: Learning (akoranga) and Excellence (hiranga) - we are very proud of you! Currently we are reviewing our Home Learning policy. There’s under two weeks left to fundraise for our School Colour Run on the 16th April. Hopefully students have been using their student profile pages at schoolfunrun.co.nz to get the most out of the fundraiser. Currently, nearly half the school has created a profile and together they have raised over $9,000!!!! This is a great start to being able to get the sand pit and greenhouse up and running and cover other PTA contributions to the school. Well done to those who have created a profile and helped raise these funds so far. You are amazing! If you are yet to create a page, I hope you will as you might be the difference in raising enough money for all the projects. Remember there are house points up for grabs when you create your fundraising project and the class that raises the most money will win a movie afternoon!! We’ve set our money due back date as 2nd April, so please make sure you’ve returned all your cash donations to the office by then. We would love some volunteers on the day, so please email Ange on angefrench@gmail.com if you can help us throw an amazing day for the kids! If you can’t help, we’d still love to have you come down and cheer the kids on to create a great atmosphere for them. Tea Towels - Have you seen our awesome school tea-towels? These are on display in the uniform shop and in Ms Davis' and Ms Sylva's class if you want to have a look at them. Lunchroom—Now that we order lunches through Little Oak, we no longer offer hot food on a Friday at school, there are tuck shop items only. Please remember to order your Little Oak lunch by midnight tonight. Any questions/fundraising ideas or if you require uniform items urgently, you can email us on karaka.pta@gmail.com. PTA AGM Report Congratulations to Renee Parlane and Lisa Tate our new co-chairpersons. Also thank you to Sarah Wilson (Treasurer) and Jenny Glover (Secretary) who have agreed to continue on for another year in these positions. PTA fundraisers in 2020 were the sales of Oxford Pies and Samosas, the colourful Art Expo, the launch of our beautiful tea towels, the printed umbrellas (which sold like hot cakes) and the ever popular art calendars. All these projects and activities allowed us to allocate money across the Jundles, Seniors and Intermediate students. In the financial year to 31 December 2020, we were able to donate $7,000 back to our school including buses to the Botanic Gardens (Years 0 to 4); intermediate sports camp (Year 7 and 8); school camp (Year 5 and 6); the bus to Kids 4 Kids Choir practice and Christmas rotations. So far in 2021 we have donated $2,500 towards intermediate camp, and are now fundraising for upgrading the school sandpit and long jump areas, and purchasing a new greenhouse for the 'garden to table' initiative. The PTA also provided delicious morning teas for the four powhiri that were held in 2020. After three years of sharing the chairmanship, Courtney Webber and Pam Wardenburg have stepped down from the role but plan to stay involved in the PTA. Thank you Courtney and Pam for everything you have done. The PTA would also like to thank all those that have helped in the past and all those who are continuing to help us. Return form and money to office by: Wednesday 31st of March 2021
