Please continue to remind students about good hygiene practices, e.g. wash hands with soap and don’t share food and drinks. Have a great week. Gerard Donovan – Acting Principal Woolworths Earn and Learn Thank you to all of the parents and community members who participated in the Woolworths Earn and Learn program in 2019 for Buranda SS. As a result of your sticker collections we were able to get a significant amount of sporting equipment which will be utilised throughout the school. These programs allow us to stock up on much needed equipment each year and help us to replenish the classroom ball allocation and add to our ever growing sporting resources. Physical Education Term 1 Swimming began in week 1 for all Year 1-6 children. Please remember that sun shirts and bathing caps are compulsory. Goggles are optional. Swimming is part of the curriculum and therefore all children are required to take part in all lessons. If your child is unable to swim for any reason please send a brief note to the classroom teacher or myself. Preps will take part in a ball skills unit throughout term 1 and will swim in term 4.

Crossing the Road Safety Door Bike Safety Choir Welcome to Music for 2020! We are excited to begin our Choir rehearsals this week. The choir is made up of our Yr3-6 students. Where: Music Room When: Every Thursday, 2nd half of first lunch, when the bell to finish eating rings. We have started using them in week 1, and they are already a very popular addition to our music class. Cherie Patton – Music teacher From the Garden Welcome back one and all and a big hello to all our new families. My name is Andrew Bryant and I am the Environmental Education teacher at Buranda State School. Although our Environmental Education classes don’t start until Term 2, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, as you might see me doing a little work around the school on Mondays this term. I’ve been in my position at the school for the last five years or so, and I love my job. We have come a long way in those five years and thanks to the welcome rain our school gardens are looking great presently, providing much needed
food and shelter for our local wildlife. We stand on the shoulders of giants though, so I’d like to pay my respects to the past teachers of this integral subject at our school. I’d also like to pay my respects to the traditional owners of the land on which our school is built. The local Indigenous name of Buranda translates to Windy Place and Forest Oak. We have planted a number of oaks in the grounds in honour of this deep history. I grew up around Sunnybank in the 1970s, back when that area was known for a hundred years as the salad bowl of Brisbane. The deep, rich, red soil of that area, decomposed basalt mainly, supported the farms, fields and forests of my youth. I fell in love with nature early (as most children do) and have followed that love to this day. I studied horticulture originally and worked as a gardener for a few years before getting my teaching degree. Since then I’ve studied permaculture, biodynamic agriculture and was a wildlife carer for about twelve years up in Cairns. I hope this gives you a little window into my world and I look forward very much to teaching your children. Andrew Bryant – Environmental Education teacher Volunteers The P&C relies on volunteers to help run all our events through the year including the weekly tuckshop and iceblock days. To provide a single point for volunteer signups, etc we’re trialling a new website where all our volunteer positions throughout the year will be posted. Currently both the tuckshop and iceblocks days for term 1 are on the site. If you can assist with tuckshop or iceblocks during Term 1 please click the link to sign up. If you have any issues with signing up, please send us an email at pandc@burandasspandc.org.au Craig Unthank – P&C President School Banking Co-Ordinator Required Due to a change of work commitments, last year’s school banking coordinator is unavailable this year. If you’re able to assist with running the school banking program this year, please get in touch with us via email pandc@burandasspandc.org.au A huge thank you to last year’s coordinator, Sarah Mac Geraghty. You can read more information about the school banking program and open a school banking account for your child online.

P&C Meeting (Wednesday 12 February - 6pm) Please note that the P&C meeting is next Wednesday 12 February, not tonight as per last week’s newsletter. All of the P&C meetings are now on Facebook. They’re generally on the first Wednesday of the month, with a few exceptions around school holidays. Coming along is a great way to hear what’s happening at the school, and to get involved in discussions about issues such as future planning and fundraising. Coming along doesn’t mean you end up with a job, but you will get to have a say on issues important to school families. If you can’t come you can still have input via: pandc@burandasspandc.org.au Buranda Bush Care Group Are you keen to get outside and get your hands dirty, while helping the environment? The Buranda Bush Care Group is run by Buranda SS parents and is helping to improve the strip of land alongside Norman Creek and the school with the aim to replace the weeds with native vegetation. The next working bee is this Sunday, 9 February at 7am and they’ll be planting native groundcovers. Please feel free to join us with your kids.
