Accountability Pillar Surveys for Parents/Students As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student learning. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In February, students in grades 4-8 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. Survey results will be available to school authorities in M ay 2015 , and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports. Innovations at St. JPII Mrs. Mackay WHAT IS PBL? For those of you who have heard SJPII teachers or your children discussing certain class projects as “PBL”, or “project-based learning”, you may be wondering what exactly that is! PBL can be thought of as similar to the tried-and-true scientific method: students are given a real-world hypothesis or scenario. They research, investigate, question, revise, prove and solve, using both individual skills and collaboration. Students are not ‘left to their own devices’ as they self-teach, a common misperception. In fact, teachers, and preferably also experts from outside the school, offer continual guidance and support, helping students revise and refine their thinking as they work toward a pre-designed learning goal. The information teachers wish for students to understand is always at the forefront of class members’ activities and choices. This is rigorous and in-depth work! Regular feedback helps students stay on track as they expand their understanding of the topic at hand. This type of learning increases a student’s ability to carefully examine ideas, improve upon them, add others’ information to their own, and find their own solutions, while not just duplicating or regurgitating information. This skill should help students prepare for future jobs that do not yet exist, but that will certainly involve collaboration, innovation and creativity. I encourage anyone who is interested in seeing PBL in action to watch the video entitled Austin’s Butterfly . Although only one part of the PBL experience – feedback – is highlighted, the video gives an idea of the other steps involved. A goal is set, the criteria needed for success is discussed, and through hard work and revision, Austin achieves an impressive final product! http://vimeo.com/38247060 News from Westview Health Centre Notable Events in Edmonton in February include: ● February 4 – Winter Walk Day – posters attached; visit http://shapeab.com/programsevents/winter-walk-day/ for information and to register. All students did a For the past couple of months, the students in great job and had a lot of fun. 8P read a selection of novels focusing on the personal experience of a child during the Holocaust – some were fictional others factual. Afterwards in groups, the students were required to create an exhibit depicting their characters perspective, capturing the thoughts and emotions regarding their experiences. The students then showcased their exhibits on Thursday, January 22 nd to parents and a variety of individuals from the community. I am very proud of the students engagement, enthusiasm and level of learning that they demonstrated in designing these exhibits. Well done!!!! DISCIESHIP LOVE COMMUNITY INNOVATION
