The buzz across the school has been wonderful and it is just getting better and better. Thank you students, teachers and to all parents/caregivers who have been in to chat, question and participate in school this week. It is always exciting having people visit and be part of our learning. The ‘old’ Room 3 classroom is looking amazing. We are hoping to have this opened in Week 3. Anzac Day in Norsewood – What a gathering! This is a special remembrance day. A time to remember and appreciate what has gone on before us. Our students placed a wreath at the Cenotaph. The generosity of our community was stronger than ever on the 25 April. Thank you to Caitlyn and Natalie Parkes for sharing a special piece of cloth that their great grandfather designed and produced back in 1916 in Egypt in World War 1. Thank you also to Mrs Roe for spending time learning about the history of Anzac day at the end of Term 1. The excitement and energy on Tuesday morning was contagious. Who can blame them! Odyssey Cave left for their Great Learning Adventure to Camp Wakarara. Some of the highlights are below to share with you. I would like to let everyone know that every child made it to Sunrise Hut. We are all so proud of them.
Year 5-8 students started the week with orientation and time to have their queries and questions answered. In some cases, the students were able to problem solve their own questions. During the week students have participated in classroom rotations and have been given time to share how they feel. Comments like: ‘It is nice to have more teacher time to help us with the strategies’, It is nice to have Whanau Groups’, ‘I like being taught what I chose to improve and being taught at my level’, ‘I like how work starts off easy and then gets harder’. The students have been studying “Bigger and Better” as part of their Inquiry topic. On May 22, students will be visiting Waipukurau to consolidate their learning. There will be a notice and a permission slip outlining the details coming soon. Lorraine will send a hardcopy out, email it to all parents/caregivers of Yr 5-8 and have an electronic copy on our school website. On Tuesday the Year 7/8 students attended Technology at Dannevirke High School. The Year 7’s cooked some fruit muffins and scones and the Year 8’s started designs for their Woodwork. This Thursday and Friday, students will be practising some Scandi Dancing in preparation for the visit from ProBus next week. This is also a great opportunity to practise for 20 May Norway Constitution Day. You are welcome to join us. On Friday, students will be selecting which Electives they wish to participate in for this Term. Electives will begin in Week 2. After reflecting on the feedback from Term 1, the times for the Electives have changed. They will now take place after lunch 1:50p.m.-2:50 p.m. Thank you again to everyone who ran an elective last term and to those who have agreed to run one this term. These opportunities are important for our students. Elective activities confirmed so far: There may be 1 or 2 more, but we are waiting for confirmation. 1. Digital Technologies 2. Singing 3. Hockey 4. Gardening 5. Nutritious Eating 6. Golf For Golf: If you have an old putter at home, can we please borrow it to increase the practice time students will have to develop the techniques that will be practised. This activity will only be able to have a maximum of 10 students. Russell will also be taking Rippa Rugby practice on Fridays starting next week. Enjoy the rest of the week and keep warm as these days are getting a little cooler. Ha Det Bra/Nga Mihi Nikkie Christie (Principal)

During Term 2 the year 5-8 students in the Senior Hub will be completing the Bigger and Better Science and Technology Unit under the guidance of NZ Young Farmers. We have chosen this unit due to many of the student’s backgrounds and evident interest in the farming and food sectors. We will be working through a resource with the students covering five modules outlined below: Bigger and Better ‘Bigger and Better,’ is an inquiry based Science and Technology Unit. The resource supports year 6 – 8 learners to develop achievements for levels three to four science within the context of sheep and/or beef farming whose key focus is on bigger and better meat production. ‘Bigger and Better,’ covers activities that will help your learners explore the relationship between science and farming, gain knowledge about the main breeds of livestock that contribute to the red meat industry, investigate farming techniques that produce a high quality and quantity of animals and gain a basic understanding of how genetic science is applied to farming practices in NZ. https://agrication.co.nz/primary/ At the conclusion of this unit we will be visiting a local farmer Robin Hilson at his farm in Waipukurau. Here the children can explore their learning and take along any questions/queries they have gathered along the way. This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to relate their learning to the real world. If you have any questions about this unit or would like to be involved, please do not hesitate to come and have a chat! It would be fantastic to get farming family or friends in to assist the students in their learning. Thanks Mrs Roe
