A Letter from the Head Dear Bodine Friends and Families, Making resolutions can be a great way to start a new year. A New Year's resolution can serve as motivation to achieve a goal, and the self-reflection involved in crafting the resolution is a positive experience in and of itself. This year, I have several resolutions: spend more time with family, exercise more, and make healthy eating decisions. Although we make resolutions with good intentions, we often have difficulty following through on them. Therefore, it's often advised that the best resolutions are those that are realistic and achievable. At Bodine School, our resolution is clear: continue our life- changing mission to lead the Mid-South in teaching students with dyslexia to read and succeed. Our mission governs everything that we do and provides guidance in all areas of the school, from academics to operations and beyond. We know that this resolution is realistic and achievable because of the successes that we see within our walls every day. Students who previously struggled with reading and writing skills are able to access their education and are transformed into happy, confident students. Stories shared by alumni families echo this sentiment and are a testament to the excellent foundation that students possess upon leaving Bodine. As we begin 2018, we are excited to witness another year full of transformative experiences for our students and for the Mid-South as a whole. In the following pages, you will find some information about upcoming events and opportunities, including open houses, our Dyslexia Symposium for elementary educators, and the Bodine Bash, our biggest fundraising event of the year. Thank you for reading this issue of Being Bodine and remaining engaged in the Bodine School community. We wish you all the best in this new year and look forward to many shared successes. Sincerely, John Murphy Head of School 1

Academic Feature: 2nd Quarter Co-Curriculars Class: Art Teacher: Lori Wakefield During the 2nd quarter, students worked on projects inspired by tribal African art and started learning about ancient Mesopotamia. One of the students' favorite activities from this quarter was making African-inspired masks to wear in a parade around the school. The students also enjoyed creating drawings and relief carvings of their own interpretations of Mesopotamian gods, heroes, and monsters. Class: Innovation Lab Teacher: Bryan Berretta 1st grade continued to study circuitry, so don't be surprised if your student asks you if you put the batteries in the right way when the TV remote dies! The 2nd grade students learned how to use their new tablets in preparation for 3D design work. Students in 3rd grade finished learning the basics of programming with their micro:Bits. The 4th grade students finished up a few projects that helped them understand how to design and cut out objects with the CNC Router. Finally, the 5th and 6th graders began to plan for their Pinewood Derby Drag Race. Class: Library Teacher: Pam Stein The 1st-4th grade students learned about Randolph Caldecott and the Caldecott Medal, which is awarded each year to a distinguished children's picture book by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The 5th-6th grade students learned about the Tennessee Electronic Library, which provides a variety of free resources to Tennesseeans. In addition, all of our students helped create decorations for this year's Scholastic Book Fair, which was Bodine's most successful one ever! Class: Music Teacher: Courtney Tucker Over the past few months, the students worked diligently to prepare for their Winter musical programs. For these programs, the students drew upon all their performing skills, including singing, acting, and choreography. The 5th and 6th grade students continued their ukulele lessons and performed an excerpt of the classic hit "Stand By Me." If you have not seen it yet, a video of this performance is on Bodine's Facebook page -- please share the video with friends and family! Class: Physical Education Teacher: Marko Pavlovic During the 2nd quarter, students continued to develop their physical fitness and teamwork skills. The students became more skilled in a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, handball, football, flag football, and ultimate Frisbee. In related news, Bodine enjoyed a successful soccer season this fall with 2 boys teams and 1 girls team, and our winter basketball season is off to a great start with 28 dedicated boys and girls playing. 3
Special Event Spotlights Grandparents & Special Friends Day On November 21, we celebrated one of our favorite traditions at Bodine: Grandparents & Special Friends Day. After the morning's brief singing program, 130 guests enjoyed their student-led tour of the school, took photos, and experienced the Dyslexia Simulation Lab. Thank you to J. Brooks for serving the coffee and hot chocolate and to all of our Bodine parents who provided doughnut treats! Scholastic Book Fair This fall's Scholastic Book Fair was themed the "Wild West Book Fair: Saddle Up and Read!" and was the most successful in Bodine's history. The funds raised will help add lots of new titles to the Bodine library as well as purchase new copies of well-loved books in need of replacing. The book fair was also a great opportunity for guests to purchase books for individual teachers' classroom libraries. Winter Music Programs In December, the 1st-4th grade students ended the semester on a musical high note with two winter-themed programs. The 1st and 2nd grade students warmed the heart of everyone in the audience with their performance of Arctic Animal Antics, while 3rd and 4th grade dazzled the audience with their rendition of The Great Big Holiday Bake-Off. Thank you to Bodine's music teacher, Courtney Tucker, for her skillful direction in these productions! 4

In 2012, The Erika Center was established to preserve and honor the memory of Erika and serves as a dyslexia resource center for the entire Mid-South community. 7

Beyond Bodine In this issue's "Beyond Bodine," former Bodine parent Cari McCaig shares the success stories of sons Walker and Aaron, both Bodine alumni. To share your alumni update, email communications@bodineschool.org! Walker McCaig attended Bodine School from 3rd through 5th grade. "When Walker arrived, he was barely reading, and when he left, he was a confident reader a little above his grade level," Cari recalls. "He never enjoyed school before Bodine, but his new friends and teachers made it fun." Walker transitioned to ECS in 6th grade. Cari notes that Walker "was well prepared to face the challenges of middle school" and that he "was proud to educate his teachers and friends at his new school about how awesome it is to be dyslexic!" Cari shares that Walker has done very well at ECS and that he has participated in cross country and lacrosse. Cari is grateful for the teachers at Bodine and the friendships that Walker made while here, insisting that they "helped develop Walker into the strong student he is today." Walker's brother, Aaron, attended Bodine School from 5th through 8th grade. According to Cari, once Aaron began attending Bodine, "he became a new kid." While at Bodine, not only did Aaron grow academically, but he also gained other valuable skills. "With lots of hard work, he learned how to become successful academically" and "developed kindness and leadership skills at Bodine partly because his teachers poured that into him," says Cari. "He also learned how to advocate for himself and is using that skill very effectively today." Aaron transitioned from Bodine to ECS as a freshman and is currently in his junior year and on the honor roll. He is involved in Model UN and Wilson Society, is a member of the ECS varsity lacrosse team, and has started a high school boys' weekly Bible study group. "Bodine has been such a gift to our family," Cari reflects, "and although Aaron didn't get there early, the four years he spent there were life changing." 10
