Caring - Sharing - Learning Together 21 May 2020 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Our Prep and Year 1 classes have settled back into regular classroom learning enthusiastically. With careful planning and family support, we have been able to promote social distancing for adults at school to maximise student and adult safety. The school is also continuing to use extra cleaning time, provide sanitiser to classrooms and is having students regularly clean their hands. Return of all Year Levels: Next week sees the return of all year levels to school for classroom learning. All stu- dents are expected to return unless they are unwell. Some parents may choose to maintain ‘Learning at Home’ ar- rangements but should understand that class teachers will not be providing additional resources as their priority will return to the class based program. In the short term, the school has prepared work booklets for extreme cases (e.g. major medical cases involving low immunity) that can be accessed by emailing the office on ad- min@mtncreekss.eq.edu.au. Enquiries will be assessed by our Head of Curriculum. Please be aware that Semester 1 reports will be very different this semester due to COVID19. Students who have not to completed assessments due to absence throughout the semester and who do not return next week may not be able to receive a rating on reports. General Parental Access to School Grounds: It is sensible to limit adult access to the school grounds at the current time, but we also acknowledge a degree of common-sense needs to occur with 1,000 students coming to school. Below are some key reminders for next week. All parents are to remain outside classrooms and teaching blocks. To promote social distancing for adults, please wait in grass areas and not outside the actual block. You could use the oval as a meeting point. If the weather looks rainy, bring an umbrella and discuss a contingency plan with your child. When it rains, we all know there will be lots of traffic, many calls to the office and limited space under shelters. It helps to prepare plans at home. As all students return to school, early pickups must return to regular procedures. Students must be signed out at the office where staff will organise students. When numbers are manageable, we can limit the need for parents to access classroom areas by having students come to the office. Emails and telephone calls to staff will assist in minimising the number of people at school. Our staff are hap- py to ring you when they are not teaching. Students and adults need to stay away from the school if unwell. People with coughs and runny noses can greatly impact the school population.
ADMINISTRATION Drop Off Time: The highest concentration of parents occurs at drop off and pick up times so the following advice is highly recommended. Say farewell to your child at the school gate or when dropping off by car. At this stage in the year, children know their way around the school and are familiar with where they need to go each morning. There is really no need to accompany them on to the school grounds. Parents with children in Prep should drop off at the fenced areas as has occurred during the past fortnight. If still accompanying your child onto the school grounds, please maintain social distancing and do not enter classrooms. Afternoon Pickup: We suggest to plan a meeting place, outside of the school, with your child that they will be able to safely access. (Please avoid congregating at the gates though). Always use “Go to the school office” as your child’s backup if they cannot find you. If still meeting your child within the school grounds, please maintain social distancing. Do not enter the teaching blocks or congregate outside of classrooms with younger siblings. The oval is a suitable meeting place for families. Closing Note: We are all very excited to have students return to school. As we all know, caution and careful plan- ning is needed to ensure a successful transition. This fortnight’s newsletter seems to have lots of rules and recom- mendations, but please understand this is only to maximise the health and safety of our entire Mountain Creek community. By being well prepared, we ensure the best outcomes for everyone. Rob Van den Heuvel Principal MCSS WEBSITE UPGRADE Queensland Education is currently upgrading our school website. ADMINISTRATION COVID19 MCSS POLICY FOR SICK STUDENTS As we return to regular schooling, we need to ensure that we are all following the procedures put in place by the Chief Health Officer for the wellbeing of the children and staff: Students and staff who are unwell are to stay away from school. The Chief Health Officer direction requiring ‘unwell students to be sent home, and to remain at home, until they are well’ remains in place. This advice in- cludes minor symptoms such as “the sniffles”. If a child shows symptoms which are consistent with Covid-19 or are cold/ flu like symptoms including ‘the sniffles’, the following steps will be used: 1. Children demonstrating unwell symptoms will be sent to the first aid room with a First Aid form. 2. Parents will be contacted by First Aid to come to school and collect their child. 3. Parents will be issued with the Covid-19- Unwell Student Policy letter. (below) 4. Students are not to return to school until they have NO SYMPTOMS or a medical professional has declared them healthy. If the medical professional declares the child to be healthy, but they remain symptomatic, the GP will need to write a letter stating the condition and list the expected symptoms. Students who return to school with symptoms and who do not have a doctors letter will need to return home. 5. If your child suffers from a condition, eg. Asthma or allergies, which presents with symptoms which could be mistaken for being ill, we ask that you make an appointment with a GP and have them write a letter stating the condition and listing the expected symptoms. NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME Wednesday the 27 May 2020 at 11 am is National Simultaneous Storytime. This year it is being run as a virtual event, and here at Mountain Creek we will be sharing the story across the week in our classrooms. The selected book for 2020 is "Chicken Divas" by Lucinda Gifford, a very cute and funny story about two chickens named Whit- ney and Britney. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultane- ously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Prep to Year 6.

As the Year 5 students had recently been learning about names, they were asked to provide suggestions for the new babies’ names. They made sugges- tions for boy’s names, girl’s names and a surname. Together we wrote the name suggestions in hiragana and in kanji, and then the Year 5 students voted to decide what to call the babies. So, we are proud to announce the arrival of Emi Wasabi, and her twin brother, Kuin Wasabi. This is what their names look like in Japanese, and what they mean. Romaji Hiragana Kanji Kanji meaning Emi えみ 笑 Smile Kuin くいん 供音 Sound of friendship Wasabi わさび 和寂 Elegant simplicity and peace The Year 5 students had a lot of fun meeting the babies, and we are sure that the younger students will enjoy them too.
