Elementary School Assignment Policy The Committee does not recognize any neighborhood boundaries or neutral zones but does recognize that elementary schools are not evenly spaced throughout the district. For the purposes of assignment, you choose 3 of our 6 Schools in your rank order.
Elementary School Assignment Policy Criteria for determining school assignment will be based on the following factors, with consideration given to yearly enrollment numbers as well as each unique student cohort. •Need for special programs and/or facilities including, but not limited to, English Language Learning and special education •Equity of class size across the district by grade level •Timeliness of registration (on-time, late, rolling) •Family preference including presence of siblings in the school •Proximity of the children's residence to the preferred school(s) and proximity of the children's residence to each of the elementary schools Due consideration will also be given to equity of staff load, contractual agreements, health and safety standards, and any other factors that might impact placement decisions.
Typical Kindergarten Schedule The school day is 8:03 AM - 2:10 PM*: • Arrival & Morning Routine (attendance, lunch count, etc.) • Literacy • Movement Break & Snack • Writers Workshop • Math • Lunch & Recess (20 minutes each) • Science or Social Studies • “Specials” • Dismissal *Franklin school day is 8:30 - 2:37
Before & After School Care Early-Bird Morning Program All Buildings Provide Early Morning Care: ❖ Program start time varies by School ❖ Fee – based ❖ Advance registration required **Please note, Melrose Public Schools does not provide transportation to and from school.
Before & After School Care Continued • After school care 2:10-3:10 PM* • Fee based • School based (separate from Education Stations) • This program is for families who need brief after school care up to 1 hour. *At the Franklin the after school care 2:37 - 3:10

Social Emotional Learning “Learning is possible only after students' social, emotional and physical needs have been met. When those needs are met, students are more likely to succeed in school.” - Carnegie Council on. Adolescent Development Task Force Schools today look to create a culture that supports learning while addressing the whole child. We teach core topics such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, engineering, technology, social studies, foreign language… In addition we support students to develop 21st Century skills that include social development, goal setting, collaboration and empathy for others. Student work together to solve problems.
Social Emotional Learning Throughout the day, through explicit and implicit teaching, students are taught social skills, self- management strategies, and responsible decision-making.

Special Education Services • For students who have been identified as needing special education, all buildings are able to provide services by a special education teacher, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and counseling by either a school psychologist or social worker. • For students who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and have more significant needs, the Roosevelt School has specialized programming known as the TLC (The Learning Center). A BCBA is located at the Roosevelt and Franklin Schools. In addition they provide consultation to students at the other elementary schools as needed. • The District has a Teacher of the Deaf who has offices at both the Roosevelt and Hoover Schools, and is available for consultation to the other schools as needed.
English As A Second Language Services • ESL teachers push in to classrooms to provide additional supports • Focus on literacy instruction • Provide additional support for developing oral language, listening, speaking, reading and writing • Program is located at Hoover, Lincoln, and Roosevelt
Specials: Art, Music, PE & Health • 1 day per week/40 minutes • Art: Students learn line, shape, color, texture and form along with basic art skills such as cutting, drawing, painting and printmaking. • Music: Students learn about beat, match pitch, differentiate between singing and speaking voices, demonstrate understanding of basic rhythmic concepts, learn to play various rhythm instruments, and begin to recognize changes in the dynamics and tempo of music. • Physical Education: Students practice, acquire and refine a variety of manipulative, locomotor, and non-locomotor movement skills, and will utilize principles of training and conditioning, and will apply the concept of wellness to their lives.
Specials: Art, Music, PE & Health • Health: Students learn basic characteristics of physical growth and development, including body functions and systems throughout the life cycle, and will acquire skills to promote and maintain positive growth and development. • Library: Students hear a read aloud and check out a book with the help of the classroom teacher and parent volunteers. • Digital Literacy: A special for grades 3, 4 and 5, however Kindergarten is supported by Digital Literacy in the classroom.
Writer’s Workshop • Students write everyday. • The teacher begins with a short lesson where they model an element of good writing. • Students then move to writing independently. • The teacher circulates from student to student providing feedback to help students improve their writing. • It is through this individual or group conferencing with students that teachers can meet the varied needs of writers in their classroom. • At the end of the workshop, the teacher asks students to share their writing with partners or asks a few students to share their writing with the class.

Math Curriculum • Students participate in a daily math block. The math workshop is structured so students have opportunities to talk, write and solve problems. • Math is structured to provide students whole and small group instruction. ❖ Whole group instruction, the students participate in problem solving and discussion of the math topic as a whole class. ❖ Students then move to work independently, with partners, and in small groups to apply the mathematical concepts. ❖ Small group instruction focus is targeted and reinforces new or previously taught material. Students are grouped based on their needs.
Math Curriculum ■ The core text in mathematics is Pearson’s EnVision Math 2.0. The research-based program and its resources fully support and align with the Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks. ■ EnVision Math is a math program that balances skill instruction with instruction that develops conceptual understanding through problem-based interactive and visual learning. ■ The curriculum has 3 key focal points: ❑ Conceptual Development- Interactive Learning + Visual Learning ❑ Ongoing Assessment, Diagnosis, and Intervention ❑ Differentiated Instruction
Open House Nights • Kindergarten tours and Registration are intended for adult caregivers so they may be informed of school specific details in order to make their Kindergarten choices. • Incoming students will have an opportunity to visit their assigned Kindergarten classrooms in late August prior to the start of school.

Incoming students will have an opportunity to visit their assigned Kindergarten classrooms prior to the start of school.

Requirements and Documents for Kindergarten: Requirements for Kindergarten: ❖ Must be 5 years of age by September 1, 2019. ❖ Must be a resident of Melrose. ❖ Parents must attend a registration session to provide documents outlined below.
Required Documents All families must bring the following documents to a registration session: ❖ A printed copy of the completed pre-registration form that you received in an email. If you miss the on-line registration period, please print out and complete the kindergarten paper registration packet found at http://melroseschools.com/families/student- registration/. ❖ If you completed the online registration you do not need to complete a paper registration packet.
Requirements and Documents for Kindergarten continued: ❖ One original proof of residency from each of the 3 categories listed in the Residency Procedures. These documents must be an original mailed from the bill source, not a fax or print out from an online billing/payment center. ❖ Home Language Survey ❖ Original birth certificate. We will make a copy for our file and return the original back to you. Original document with seal must be presented ❖ Current physical exam, including immunizations. (Must be within 12 months of the start of school.)

Steps to Pre-register for Kindergarten ❖ Step #1: PRE-REGISTRATION Please pre-register your student online. Online Pre- Registration will open February 3rd and will close on February 17th, 2019. Once you have successfully completed the online pre- registration you will receive an email confirmation. (Please continue to step 2) ** IF YOU MISS THESE DATES YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE A PAPER PACKET AND YOU WILL NEED TO BRING IT WITH YOU DURING THE 3 DAY OPEN REGISTRATION. (Please continue to step 2)
REGISTRATION Step #2: Registration will be held for 3 Days ❖ Monday, March 4th, 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (café), 350 Lynn Fells Pkwy. ❖ Wednesday, March 6th, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Parent Information Center, (Central Admin.) 360 Lynn Fells Pkwy. ❖ Thursday, March 7tht, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Parent Information Center, (Central Admin.) 360 Lynn Fells Pkwy. • Parents who require translation services are requested to attend the March 4th or March 6th registration. • Registrations received after March 7th, will result in assignments being made on a space available basis!! Registration is when you will bring in your required documents.
Next Steps Kindergarten Screening ❖ Assessment data for students currently attending the Franklin ECC will be used for the screening. ❖ Kindergarten Screening for all other students will be held on March 15, 2019 and March 22, 2019. ❖ You will receive your appointment for the screening at Kindergarten Registration. ❖ Screenings will be held at the Franklin Early Childhood Center.
