PLEASE READ ME Week 6 - Term 1 7th March 2019 Dear Family and Friends, What a fabulous day for Rooms 1, 2 and 3’s trip to Mount Biggs for the Kainui Tabloids. There certainly were some very tired children – and staff – on their return. It is great to be able to make the most of the beautiful weather before it ends. Many thanks to the parents who supported the children with their attendance at Mount Biggs. Once again we were extremely pleased with the attendance at Parent Interviews this Entry time into the carpark after school is 2.45pm at the earliest. week. We appreciate the time that you give for these and also the valuable information ENTRY TIME TO SCHOOL in the morning is AFTER 8.30am. that you share. Room 5 students whose interviews were scheduled for Monday will now be held next Monday, 11th March at the same time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. What an entertaining Parents Forum we had last Thursday. My word, if we didn’t know why children bullied we certainly do now and we were entertained by Robert Pereira for the evening with his wonderful scenarios and impersonations of the interactions between children. Both Robert and myself were extremely pleased to see Room 4 bursting at the seams with parents all eager to hear from a professional re children and bullying. Thirty six parents was a fantastic number and I was really proud to be able to show what a supportive community we have. Thank you so much for your attendance. Robert has promised to come back next year when he is in New Zealand and speak about ‘Boys and Internet Addiction’. If you are not already aware of the latest issue re the internet for children please read the following. Momo: An important memo from Netsafe to parents. Netsafe has received reports relating to young people who have been exposed to the harmful online ‘game’ known as the Momo Challenge. Although we have not received any reports of young people in New Zealand taking part in the ‘challenge’, we are aware that some young people have seen content relating to Momo and have been very upset by the content and imagery. There has also been talk about whether this ‘challenge’ is real or a hoax. Regardless, individuals who come across Momo-related content may experience emotional distress at seeing it – particularly younger children. If you or your child experiences the Momo Challenge you need to report it to the social media site or website that it is on. In New Zealand it is against the law to incite another person to take their life. If someone is targeting your young person you need to ring the Police. Sites to watch even include You Tube and Minecraft. 1

If we have more than four people wanting tanks, names will be put in a hat and four names drawn out. Please email Brenda at principal@hiwinui.school.nz to register your request for a tank or tanks. Emergency Food: At the beginning of each year we ask that every child bring a can of non-perishable food to school in case of an emergency that requires them to be at school longer than a 9am to 3pm day. Tips on How to Keep Students Safe Online: 1. Talk to your children about their lives on social media. Where do they go? Who do they hang out with? What apps do they use? What do they enjoy doing and why? Asking open-ended questions, listening carefully and avoiding judgement lets young people know that we are engaged and interested and could be the right person to talk to should things go wrong. DID YOU KNOW - if your child (aged 15 years and under) is suffering from a tummy bug (vomiting and diarrhoea), there is a free service available from most community pharmacies. Take your unwell child to your local pharmacy for help. If medicine is required it will be supplied free of charge.
