PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 02 INTRODUCTION Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust ("WWSET") are the official charity of Wycombe Wanderers Football Club. Following the successful delivery of our Future Goals project for Secondary Schools during the 2019-20 academic year(pre-Covid-19), we are launching Future Goals 2.0 for Primary Schools after having successfully secured funding continuation from Buckinghamshire Council via their Young People Mentoring Grant for another year of delivery. Primary Future Goals 2.0, which is completely free for schools to participate in, focuses on positive engagement with young people who are in years 5 & 6. The project specifically targets pupils who are disengaged with education, disruptive at school, and who outside of school may be: low attaining and low achieving have poor attendance less inclined to complete homework are inactive have low self esteem and self worth The practical delivery of WWSET’s Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project centres around helping those children mentioned above, within the classroom and individually, to overcome their personal issues and challenges, therefore enabling them to flourish as they move forward. This document, which is written for the benefit of schools within the Wycombe District and immediate surrounding areas, seeks to outline the delivery specifics of the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project for the 2020-21 academic year. We sincerely hope it’s of interest to your school and look forward to working with you and your pupils throughout the project's duration. Kind Regards Paul Foley Head of Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust

PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 04 EVIDENCE OF NEED As you will no doubt already be aware, ever increasing pupil numbers coupled with significant budgetary constraints have resulted in schools facing extreme difficulties with regards to delivering an effective educational offering, which takes into account individual needs, to all pupils. Children who are motivated to learn generally attend school regularly, do better academically and display pro-social classroom behaviour. Unfortunately, up to 20 per cent of pupils in any year group are described as disengaged. Many of these individuals do not catch up academically in later years. Unmotivated children tend to opt out, do the bare minimum required and can be difficult to teach. They are unwilling to participate in class discussions, frequently look bored, tune out, distract others, give up easily on tasks, talk out of turn, disrupt the flow of classes and have poor attendance. As they get older they are more likely to skip classes, engage in challenging anti-social behaviours, and are more at risk of dropping out of school. In 2018 the Department of Education reported that a massive 1,276,215 pupils (14.6% of total pupils) in England have Special Educational Needs. Male pupils are disproportionately represented within this statistic, as are those coming from deprived backgrounds. Schools do not receive sufficient extra funding to help those with SEND needs, costing them an average extra £6000 per pupil per year (UK Parliament 2019). Many children are effectively excluded from school as councils cannot afford to meet their needs. 4,050 children were in this position in 2018, an increase of 137% from 2016 (National Education Union 2018). Maintaining an effective education system that caters for individual needs and reduces the current challenges being faced by schools requires innovative solutions, hence the proposed WWSET Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project. We are confident participation in the project will go a long way towards alleviating some of the pressures being faced by our local schools, and will ultimately lead to long term benefits being realised by those individuals who are involved.
PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 05 PROJECT DELIVERY Throughout the 2020-21 academic year the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project will seek to engage a number of individual pupils who are most in need of support. The participating pupils will consist of 6 pupils from a class within our partner schools. Potential participants will be identified by their respective schools as in need of support to combat their risk of exclusion due to their poor behaviour, their persistent absenteeism, and/or their high levels of disengagement. Participation is open to both male and female pupils. The Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project delivery will involve a 30 week (split into 3 groups of ten) programme duration running from Sept 2020 to July 2021. Each school that participates will be allocated one morning or afternoon session per week for the duration of the project where trained WWSET staff will spend the time at the school. If there is more than one class in a year group, we would be able to deliver to one class in the morning and the other in the afternoon (subject to discussions). Before School Football Club: Within each school WWSET will offer a before football club from 8am – 9am. (times to be confirmed with individual schools). The aim of the club will be to encourage participants to arrive at school on-time and to start their day with some positive, physical activity. For afternoon sessions, this would take place at lunchtime (to be confirmed with individual schools). The club participants will be made up of the targeted individuals identified by the school as being disengaged with education and/or suffering with social/emotional/behavioural issues. Alongside the targeted participants there will also be spaces for un-targeted pupils to participate. It’s hoped that by mixing the two cohorts some positive and aspirational peer mentoring will take place at the sessions throughout the duration of the project. Class Session Following the delivery of the before school / lunchtime football club the targeted participants will take part, along with the rest of their class, in a whole class lesson which will have a focus aligned to the priority areas listed on page three. Outline of teaching programme: Term One: Each session will be based on personal and social development. Term Two: Each pupil will be undertaking the Young Leaders Playmaker Award, a great introduction into leadership for pupils aged nine and over. Term Three: From September 2020, all state-funded schools in England will be required to teach first aid as part of health education for all Key Stages. Therefore, we will deliver the St John's programme for First Aid for Primary Pupils. For Year Six, we will also include a short programme for Secondary School transition. 1-1 Mentoring: Following the group session the two members of WWSET staff will remain in school and will spend 30 minutes with each one of the targeted participants on an individual basis. The 30 minutes that are spent with the targeted participants will involve positive mentoring via one-to-one discussions, reading and/or targeted intervention work (as arranged with the class teacher) plus goal and challenge setting for the following week. Progress will then be measured at the next mentoring session and new goals set for the week ahead. Celebration Event: The final week of the project will see the targeted participants and their classes from each of the schools involved in the project being brought together for a celebration event which will take place at Adams Park. Staffing: The members of WWSET staff delivering the project will be fully qualified teachers or sports coaches with significant relevant experience. The project will be overseen by a fully qualified teacher who will hold ultimate responsibility.
PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 06 MENTORING As part of the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project each targeted participant will receive a 30 minute targeted 1:1 session with a member of WWSET staff each week. Over the course of the project this equates to each pupil receiving 900 minutes targeted 1:1 mentoring, focusing on identifying agreed areas for personal development, alongside some reading and/or targeted intervention work (as arranged with the class teacher) Each 1:1 session will need to be carried out in a safe and private space allowing individuals the opportunity to build a positive and productive relationship with their WWSET mentor. It is each participating schools responsibility to provide a suitable space to be used for the mentoring sessions. A personal action plan will be drawn up and implemented in order to monitor and track individuals' progress. *In the event of prolonged school closure during the delivery period similar to that caused by Covid-19 WWSET will attempt to continue mentoring via an online platform to ensure continuity and support during difficult periods. The basic programme will be taking place on the following proposed dates - variations will be discussed with participating schools. Term 1 Week Beginning: Term 2 Week Beginning: Term 3 Week Beginning: 28th September 2020 11th, 18th, 25th January 2021 26th April 2021 5th, 12th, 19th October 2020 1st, 8th, 22nd February 2021 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th May 2021 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th November 2020 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd March 2021 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th June 2021 7th December 2020 5th July 2021
PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 07 MONITORING & EVALUATING In order for WWSET to accurately monitor and measure the outcomes achieved by the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project a high emphasis will be placed on data collection. Data collected will be used to evidence the personal development achievements of each individual participant to both the funders and the wider public (subject to permissions). WWSET will also report back to schools at regular intervals the progress that is being made by their pupils. Each targeted pupil who participates on the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project will complete an entry and exit questionnaire to establish levels of engagement at the beginning and end of the programme in order to demonstrate behaviour and attitude change. Schools will be required to complete a questionnaire regarding the changes they witness in individuals' engagement levels and behaviour whilst in their school environment. This will involve reporting back to WWSET information such as school attendance levels, behavioural incidents, exclusions and academic progress. Similarly WWSET will be seeking to engage parents/guardians of participants throughout the project in order to ascertain their feelings regarding the changes that the project facilitates for their child.
PRIMARY FUTURE GOALS 2.0 08 FURTHER INFORMATION In order for the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project to achieve its aims, it is imperative that WWSET and participating schools develop a productive and collaborative working relationship throughout the duration of the year. Exact roles and responsibilities regarding the management and delivery of the Future Goals Project will be laid out and agreed upon in a Service Level Agreement prior to the commencement of delivery. The Service Level Agreement will cover areas such as: Ways in which the school is expected to commit to the programme; The schools playing an active role in encouraging pupils to attend and fully engage with the project; The responsibility of schools to uphold any sanctions considered appropriate by WWSET staff; The sharing of concerns or information regarding individual participants that may affect delivery; Commitment to policies throughout the project, including but not limited to Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Data Protection. NEXT STEPS... If you feel that the Primary Future Goals 2.0 Project would benefit your pupils and would like to find out more information regarding possible participation please contact WWSET's Education Manager, Mark Heath, via email or telephone: mark.heath@wwfc.com | 01494 455736 Please note that delivery of the project is due to start during the week beginning 28th September 2020 and it's WWSET’s hope that all participating schools and individual pupils can be identified well in advance of this date. This will allow the participants a smooth transition into the project, and for the project to be launched with a well-organised and positive start that will set the tempo for the duration of engagement. Once you have considered this proposal, please do not delay getting in touch to express your interest.
