1 Saint Louis Catholic High School Cheerleading Constitution 2021-2022 (Must submit all signed pages of the constitution/ participation agreement, most current report card, and LHSAA agreement form by the first day of tryouts) Purpose The purpose of the Saint Louis Cheerleading team is to create, promote, and uphold school spirit in accordance with school rules and to represent Saint Louis Catholic High School in a positive and Christian manner. Cheerleaders must exemplify behavior suitable to their position of leadership. These guidelines of the Saint Louis Cheerleading Constitution outline the details of behavior expectations, uniform information, expense obligations, parent involvement, and tryout procedures. This document is designed with the Saint Louis Catholic High School Administration to inform student athletes and parents of important details pertaining to the Saint Louis Cheerleading program. 1. The Saint Louis Cheerleading squad will consist of one strong, hard-working, spirited, determined, and positive squad. The team will consist of Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Their purpose is as follows: a. Promote school spirit, cooperation, and communication among faculty, students, and parents. b. To promote healthy and sportsmanlike conduct. c. To develop character, leadership, and commitment in each athlete. d. To be ambassadors of goodwill between St. Louis Catholic and the school community. e. To demonstrate Christian behavior and to set an example with positive representation of the Saint Louis Catholic Cheerleading program. 2. In addition, each cheerleader agrees to promote good relations with rival schools and to participate at the following events: a. All sporting events when set on the cheer calendar including but not limited to football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, and baseball. b. Summer camps c. JR cheer clinics d. Pep rallies e. Charitable and community events f. Competitions g. Any other events placed on the cheerleading calendar Cheerleader Tryouts Tryouts are open to any students in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who is enrolled at Saint Louis Catholic High School for the subsequent year. 2 1. Each candidate must secure an information packet and provide the following on the first day of tryouts, two days prior to the actual team tryout: a. Signed copy of the cheerleading constitution and participation agreement signed by the legal guardian and student athlete candidate. b. Most recent report card c. LHSAA agreement form 2. Candidates are expected to attend all three days of tryouts. Failure to attend the three days of tryouts could hamper the candidate’s ability to learn the tryout material. 3. Candidates must be able to land and execute a standing back handspring on the cheerleading mat. Our team consists of a full tumbling squad. 4. Video tryouts are allowed if a candidate has an extreme medical condition which cannot be older than four months. The candidate must submit a tumbling video and jump video that was taken no longer than four months before the injury occurred. If the video is more than four months before the injury occurred, the video will not be valid, and the candidate will receive zero points for the skills and will not fulfill the standing back handspring requirement. A doctor note (not from an urgent care or family member), must state the diagnosis, specific limitations, and when the candidate may return to participating in ALL athletic requirements such as tumbling, jumps, stunts, running, etc by the first day of tryout week. The injured candidate must attend all practices, tryouts, and perform all skills that are not prevented by the injury. The video cannot be on a spring floor, air track, or trampoline. If the candidate makes the squad, the candidate will not be allowed to tumble, cheer, stunt, jump, run, etc. until the skills shown in the videos submitted can be properly performed on a cheerleading mat in front of the coaches and administration along with the full release from the doctor. 5. Each candidate will spirit into position and perform a cheer/ chant. They will then either spirit to the middle of the mat or do their running tumbling pass. They will then be asked to throw their back handspring on the cheerleading mat. If the candidate does not land and execute their standing back handspring, they will not complete the requirement and will not be judged for the rest of their tryout. The candidate will then start their tryout cheer when they are ready to begin. They will be judged on the following criteria worth 10 points except for running tumbling, worth 20 points. a. Running tumbling (round off back handspring(s) 1-5 b. Front walk over round off back handspring, round off tuck, or round off back handspring tuck 6-10 c. Round off back handspring layout or whip through 11-15 d. Front walkover roundoff back handspring layout 16-18 e. Roundoff full twist/ double twist, round off back handspring full twist/ double twist 19-20 f. Standing tumbling: back handspring 1-5 and back tuck 6-10 g. Jumps, chant, cheer memorization, motion technique, voice projection, spirit and enthusiasm, and overall impression (all worth 10 points each). 3 6. Although it is mandatory to throw a back handspring on the cheerleading mat, this skill must be executed and landed on two feet for my own safety. I will not attempt the skills throughout the tryout process if I am not comfortable in doing so. I understand Saint Louis Catholic High School and cheerleading team are not making me throw any skill that I am not comfortable doing, including but not limited to standing tumbling, running tumbling, and jumps on the cheer mat. We/ I understand it is our decision to try out for Saint Louis Catholic Cheerleading and if at any time during the process the candidate does not want to continue with tryouts they reserve the right to forfeit tryouts at any time for the current year but may return and tryout the following year. 7. The attire for all candidates must be the same: all black shorts or Nike Pro shorts, all white plain tank top, plain white sports bra, plain white crew socks, white cheer shoes or tennis shoes, white bow, and high/ tight ponytail. 8. Squad selection will be determined by the top scores and will be selected by using the natural break of scores. 9. Results will be posted by numbers only on our Cheerleading Instagram and Facebook pages, by 10pm. Captains 1. Candidates must have a mature leadership skill, team spirit, maintain good organizational skills, demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility, adhere to the constitution, have excellent attendance, miss less than 25% of practice and games combined, positivity, respectfulness, work well with others, excellent cooperation, and set a good example on and off campus always. 2. All candidates will write a two-paragraph essay explaining why they would be an asset as cheer captain of the squad. 3. All captains are required to bring their call-sheets to games and assist the coach throughout the year. Cheer Requirements 1. Cheerleaders are expected to have excellent school attendance and participate in all practices, games, summer camp, performances, and any events placed on the cheerleading calendar. 2. Cheerleaders are required to participate in all fundraisers and community events. 3. MUST attend summer camp. Failure to attend summer camp will result in dismissal from the squad. 4. All cheerleaders are required to be on time and stay the duration of the scheduled event unless excused by the coaches. 5. Juniors and Seniors cheer at all varsity football games and boy’s varsity basketball games. 6. Freshman and Sophomores cheer at all home JV football games, all varsity football games, and girl’s varsity basketball games. 4 7. All cheerleaders are required to ride the transportation set by the coaches both to and from all games. Competition 1. The Saint Louis Cheerleading Competition team will practice one more day in addition to the normal cheer practices. 2. The participation and worth ethic along with the skill level will determine where athletes are placed in the routine for the competitiveness and safety of the team. 3. All practices will be mandatory even through some weekends and school breaks. 4. Scheduled vacations during the holidays must be approved by September 1st to hold a position in the routine. 5. The competition team will consist of no more than 30 athletes but will have alternates on the team as well to step in when needed. Tryouts will be held if more than 30 athletes are interested. Unexcused – Tardy or Absence 1. Missing any scheduled event that is placed on the team calendar will result in one unexcused absence and will result in sprints after the following after. 2. After seven unexcused absences, athletes will be placed on probation. (Probation means the cheerleader will be required to attend all games and practices and will be required to fulfill all financial responsibilities and fundraisers.) 3. Examples of unexcused absences include but are not limited to tutoring outside of school, sports/ teams outside of Saint Louis Catholic High School, jobs, friends and family parties, and extracurricular activities outside of Saint Louis Catholic High School. 4. Tardiness is unacceptable at all times. If a cheerleader is late to practice, they will run a sprint for every minute they are late. If a cheerleader is late to a function or game, they will run a sprint at the next practice for every minute they are late. Excused – Tardy or Absence 1. For any absence to be considered approved, it must be cleared by the coach more than one day prior to the event, unless there are extenuating circumstances including but not limited to a death in the family, hospitalization, etc. 2. If a cheerleader is ill or injured under doctor’s care, a written doctor’s note should specifically dictate the type and degree of physical limitations. 3. Any injured cheerleader under doctor’s care will not be allowed to practice or perform until fully recovered and released by the doctor. If injured during camp or competition season, that cheerleader will be removed from the routine until they are fully released by the physician. 4. Cramps and headaches are not excused. Cheerleaders may sit out at the sponsor’s discretion. 5 5. Vacations must be submitted one month prior to departure date for it to be excused. Vacations are unexcused during camp season (March through the camp date), football season, competition season, with the exception of the one week between Christmas and New Year’s. Uniforms and Expenses 1. Cheerleaders are responsible for purchasing and maintaining all necessary items including but not limited to workout clothes, uniforms, warmups, and accessories as required. 2. Jewelry is to not be worn while a cheerleader is in uniform. Earrings should never hang past the earlobe. 3. The coach will determine the proper fit of the cheerleader’s uniforms and clothing. 4. A list of expenses will be given at the first parent meeting after tryouts that will include uniforms, accessories, camp fees, sponsorships, fundraisers, and cheer fees. Conduct 1. Cheerleaders are expected to behave in a manner that is becoming to the individual, as well as to the organization they represent. All cheerleaders should be aware that in or out of uniform they are representatives of the cheerleading squad and Saint Louis Catholic High School. They should act accordingly by maintaining a high standard of conduct both in and out of uniform, both at and away from school. 2. Cheerleaders will not eat or drink anything except for water when in uniform. 3. For the safety of our students, hazing will result in harsh punishment determined by the coach and administration. The definition of hazing is as follows: to intimidate by physical punishment, to harass or try to embarrass or disconcert by banter, ridicule, or criticism; treatment intended to put in ridiculous or disconcerting positions. 4. As a Saints cheerleader, you understand the misuse of any social media including but not limited to Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Finsta, Twitter, Tumblr, etc, will result in a three-week probation period from the date of misuse. Miscellaneous 1. Cheerleaders must be covered by a family medical insurance policy. Verification of insurance coverage must be given to the coach at the first parent meeting. 2. Cheerleaders must pass a physical exam stating that they are in condition to participate in cheerleading activities. 3. For the safety of the athlete, all positions on the team are determined by the coaches and there will be no questioning placements or positions. If questioned by the parent or cheerleader, it will result in 10 sprints at the next practice. 4. Every cheerleader is required to tryout every year. 5. Cheerleaders (not parents) are required to notify coaches of tardiest or absences. 6 6. If a parent has a question, they are to ask the coaches through the band app in the chat room. Coaches The coaches are appointed by the principal and approved by the Saint Louis Catholic Administration. They have completed the Safe Environment Course required by the Diocese of Lake Charles. They are responsible for coaching cheerleaders in the areas of motions, jumps, tumbling, stunting technique, stretching, and conditioning. They are responsible for all cheerleading activities that they placed on the cheer calendar. Since all circumstances and situations cannot be foreseen, it is the responsibility of the coaches to handle these situations with common sense and to act in the best interest of the Saint Louis Catholic High School Cheerleading program. All cheerleading decisions are up to the discretion to the coaches and administration. 7 Saint Louis High School Cheerleading Participation Agreement (Must be signed and submitted on the first day of tryout week) Participation in the Saint Louis Catholic High School Cheerleading Program is an honor and privilege. For the cheerleader to retain this privilege, the policies and procedures contained in the Saint Louis Catholic Cheerleading Constitution must be adhered to in the spirit of discipline, education, and overall goals and objectives of Saint Louis Catholic High School and the Saint Louis Catholic Cheerleading team. The policies and enforcement procedures are relative to the SLC Cheerleading Program and will be administered accordingly. The rules, regulations, and policies are all outlined in the SLC Cheerleading Constitution. I, ___________________________________, have read the SLC Cheerleading Constitution and will do my best as a SLC Cheerleader to always set a positive example for the Saint Louis Catholic High School student body and community. I will follow the rules set forth in the SLC Cheerleading Constitution and understand the consequences if I fail to adhere to the rules and regulations. I understand I am held to a higher standard of behavior to the coaches, administration, teachers, peers, and the community. I will commit myself to working together as a team and will always strive to have a positive attitude. I will respect me coaches, captains, and fellow squad members at all times. I, ___________________________________, have read the Saint Louis Catholic High School Cheerleading Constitution and I am fully aware of the tine, commitment, and discipline that will be required of my student athlete. I understand there will be expenses occurred for including but not limited to uniforms, practice wear, warm- ups, fundraisers, lost or damaged items issued by the sponsors, etc. I understand and agree to abide by all provisions of the SLC Cheerleading Constitution. I further acknowledge that I will assist the coaches in the monitoring and enforcement of the constitution policies and procedures. I support my child in this endeavor and understand the implications that will result if the rules and regulations are not followed.
