Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey League (MAWHL) Established in 1975, MAWHL (Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey League) is the oldest continuously active women’s ice hockey league on the East coast. Their goal is to provide a place for women to play ice hockey in a competitive and friendly atmosphere. There are currently two divisions: Senior C and Senior D. The C level provides an opportunity for women who may have played prep or varsity high school, non-varsity college (ACHA), NCAA college, or have 10+ years of women’s adult hockey playing experience. D players typically have at least 2-3 years of experience and are looking for a higher level of competition than a ‘Learn to Play’ league. The D level provides an opportunity for women to develop their skills and have fun playing a game they love! If you do not currently play on a women’s team but are interested in joining a MAWHL team please contact MAWHLboard@gmail.com and check out the DMV Women’s Hockey Tailgate Party on September 18 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at The Gardens Ice House. We had a chance to chat with Jen Birsa and hear her hockey story! 1. When did you start playing hockey? I was in my mid-forties when I decided to take the leap and play the game. My husband had joined a low-level hockey team and convinced me to join. I immediately loved it and was hooked. 2. Where do you currently play? I currently play for Sharks and in the Women's Silver Division at Gardens Ice House. 3. What is your favorite hockey memory? My favorite memory is playing in Women's Gold for a few years. It was lightning fast, and the women were always encouraging and supportive with an old timer like me. And, scoring a goal in that league was truly special
