2022 VISION GLOBAL IMPACT CELEBRATION COME AND SEE How the Gospel Changes Our Story Email Newsletter THE NEED FOR CHANGE Everyone has a story. Everyone’s story is part of a larger, dominant narrative being told through the cultures in which we live. In this newsletter: Every story—small or large, individual or societal, national or global—expresses a longing for change in the midst of suffering. The longing for real change, The Need For Change reflected throughout human history and confirmed in Page 01 the present, serves as our sought-after hope for the future. The Source of Change God’s story, the Bible, teaches that the only way to true, Page 01 lasting change is through the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. When the gospel becomes the overarching The Means of Change narrative of our stories, it releases the power of Page 02 transformation in and through our hearts and lives to make a difference in our families, communities, nations, GIC Teams & Resources and world. THE SOURCE OF CHANGE Throughout the Bible, God invites people to come and see so that the world may know Him by entering His story. With song, the psalmist calls worshippers to come and see what God has done and then speak of his awesome deeds (66:5). Through Jesus, the Word made flesh dwelling among His people, God beckons humanity to come and see who He is and what He is doing to redeem our story (John 1:39, 46). Even, through the unlikeliest of people—an unloved, unaccepted, and unsuccessful Samaritan woman—God invites us to come and see how an encounter with Jesus changes one person’s story to change many others (John 4). Exploring the way Jesus draws out the story of the woman at the well through gospel conversation that leads to her transformation will equip us to engage others through our own stories of gospel change. Wherever God calls us to join him in His mission— at home, in the holy city, hurting coast, or hungering world—we will invite others to come and see how the gospel changes our story. 2022 Vision Global Impact Celebration| page 03
THE MEANS OF CHANGE Engage with the Story Our community of St Michael's Church and our mission partners will experience the gospel afresh as we come and see the way Jesus crosses every cultural barrier—racial, religious, gender, and moral—to engage the Samaritan woman in a life-changing conversation. Going deep into the teaching of Jesus in John 4, we will encounter with the woman, the disciples, and those who come and see, the only One who can truly satisfy our longing for fulfillment. Through stories, music, and visual art, our own hearts will be transformed to worship God in Spirit and in truth. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water (10). Equip with the Story When we are equipped by exploring how the truths of the gospel have changed and continue to change our stories, we may engage others with increased sensitivity and effectiveness: (1) by listening for and identifying with their places of longing through everyday conversations at home, work, or school and (2) by sharing how God through his gospel has met us in a similar place of need. 2022 Vision Global Impact Celebration| page 04
In the story of the Samaritan woman’s transformation, we witness how both her subjective experience of the gospel and the objective truths of the gospel lead to the transformation of many in her city. After the woman receives salvation through Jesus the source of the living water (objective truth), an eternal spring wells up within to overflowing as she invites the city: "Come, see a man who told me ever all I ever did, could this be the Christ?" (John 4:29). They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world” (42) Then “many Samaritans from that town believed in [Jesus] because of the woman's testimony" (subjective experience)... (39). "And when the Samaritans came to [Jesus], they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world” (objective reality) (39-42). 2022 Vision Global Impact Celebration| page 05
MEANS OF CHANGE THROUGH GIC 2022 God’s mission engages people where they are, transforms them, and equips them for wherever and to whomever, He sends them. Then and now, God invites people into His story and invites others through ours! "...Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest" (35) One of the greatest blessings of the GIC is that we get to hear how God is rewriting our mission partners’ personal and communal stories with His. Nothing can provide more encouragement than hearing about (or better yet, participating in) triumphant stories that begin in poverty, exploitation and suffering then transform into epic victory as the author Himself enters into the narrative. Through Come and See: How the Gospel Changes Our Story , we aim to inspire our community through artistic storytelling, effective teaching, and compelling preaching to give toward God’s kingdom work. Motivated by the way God meets us personally in our brokenness to bring about progressive and lasting change through His gospel, we will be mobilized to live, serve, and work in ways that draw the culture around us into His story. 2022 Vision Global Impact Celebration| page 06
