Welcome to the January edition of the NHS Jobs newsletter. This month we’re talking about the new We Are the NHS campaign, looking at how to use preapplication questions and introducing you to a new member of the NHS Jobs team, as well as sharing updates on recent developments and the project. Did you know? In December 2018...
‘We are the NHS’ IT and Admin recruitment campaign This month, NHS Jobs has been working with NHS England to prepare for the next phase of the #WeAreTheNHS campaign which goes live today, (Monday 28 January). A recruitment call for IT, Digital and Administration staff has been launched to promote the broad range of roles within the NHS, and the rewarding opportunities available. From entry level roles through to senior management positions, every member of the NHS team plays a vital part in caring for the millions of NHS patients with care and compassion when it matters most. Our user researcher, Sarah Stokes, said: “People often tell us that they don’t realise there are so many types of roles within the NHS and that not all of them require medical training. There are over 360,000 vacancies advertised on NHS Jobs every year, and this campaign will let people know that not all NHS vacancies are medical, or front line health care there is something for everyone in the NHS!" The campaign aims to encourage job seekers to apply for immediate vacancies within the NHS, showcasing reallife colleagues carrying out their roles within a range of environments and working alongside clinical colleagues and patients. We’re really proud to support the campaign and look forward to seeing the positive effect this should have on the volume of applicants searching and applying. If you’re thinking about advertising an IT or admin role then now might be the perfect time to do it. For more information, visit the We are the NHS campaign website. Enhancements to the service Electronic offer and contract letter We have now released a series of short elearning videos to help you create electronic offer and contract letters. If you’re already using NHS Jobs to create these letters we’d love your feedback drop us a line at nhsbsa.nhsjobs@nhs.net Google for jobs NHS Jobs vacancies are now appearing on Google for Jobs, increasing the audience for your ads. Candidates who may not have considered the NHS as
an employer will now see the vacancies you advertise with us if they search for jobs via Google. Nursing associate values To ensure we continue to meet NHS Digital’s reporting requirements we will be introducing new nursing associate values and updating two professional registration bodies. Look out for the addition of new values from the end of this month. Keep an eye on the latest news section of the NHS Jobs website for news of all new releases. How do I manage applications to get the right candidates for the role? Using additional and preapplication questions can help save time and resources, speed up the shortlisting process, and support recruiting managers in getting the right candidate. NHS Jobs allows you to easily set up application questions via the Admin section of the portal. Here’s how… Application form additional questions: A recruiter can use the additional questions to filter applicants in or out depending on their answers. This can be a very quick and convenient way to narrow down a large number of applications. The NHS Jobs portal includes some easy to use preset questions and you can also create your own. You can then either set a yes/no answer option, allow free text answers, or use multiple choice answers. You can decide what order your questions will appear in on the application form and candidates’ responses will show in the supporting statement section. You can also provide the
applicant with the ability to upload an additional attachment. Preapplication questions: These can be used to screen applicants applying for a position. For example, if they do not meet an essential requirement for the role they are then prevented from continuing with the application process. You can choose from a range of preset questions, or create your own. Pre application questions need to be used carefully. It’s important to ensure you understand the implications of using them so the process meets all employment legislation. Application form additional questions, accessed from the Admin section by your system administrator, can assist you in gathering key information to support your shortlisting decision making. Questions can be customised to meet your needs. Preapplication questions can prevent applicants who do not meet some essential criteria from progressing to the application form. Remember you can use your training site to practice using these features and see how it works for you and the candidate. For more detailed guidance on both of these features refer to the ‘Application
Form Questions’ Guidance in the System Administrator training materials section. The future service New Year focus It’s the start of a new year and we’re continuing to make progress researching, designing and carrying out user testing with current employers and applicants who use the service. Our main areas of focus currently are: creating and posting a vacancy applying for a job shortlisting In line with the Government Digital Service (GDS) alpha assessment feedback, we are focussing on a simple journey through the recruitment process so we can understand and design for the very basic needs on which to base the future development of the full service. Initially, we are creating prototypes to accommodate the smaller organisational users of the service and later in the project we will expand our focus to larger users, including Trusts, to increase the scope of requirements and ensure the service meets the needs of everyone. Potential applicants for jobs have certainly not been left out. We’re also working continuously with this user group to make sure their needs are met in the future service. If you would like to participate in user research, please contact the team at nhsbsa.nhsjobsur@nhs.net We’ll keep you updated in future newsletters about how both of the groups continue to progress, as well as news about the project. In the meantime, if you have any questions, comments or feedback, contact the team and we’ll be happy to help.
