“The Church draws her life from the Eucharist.” Pope St. John Paul II The Year of the Eucharist. The Year of the Eucharist in the Diocese of Lancaster - Information for Schools NCW MD AF 1
Following the National Eucharistic Congress in Liverpool in the Autumn of 2018, Bishop Paul Swarbrick has announced that the schools in the Diocese of Lancaster will be invited to celebrate a Year of the Eucharist from the Feast of Christ the King (Sunday 25th November 2018) to last through the Liturgical Year. The Bishop has asked that schools are invited in this year to consider the place of the Eucharist in the life of the school and to take the opportunity to renew the Eucharistic heart of the school community as part of the universal call to holiness. He has requested that the Education Service provides guidance and resources for schools to develop a deeper understanding of the Eucharist as the ‘Source and Summit’ of the life of the Church. The Education Service is offering two study days in the Autumn term 2018 on the Mass and Eucharistic Adoration and will provide guidance through resources and support at R.E. Subject Leader meetings for Primary colleagues and at Heads of R.E. meetings for secondary teachers. The extent to which schools participate with the Year of the Eucharist is for them to decide along with their governing bodies. Also, the Education Service will work with the Deans and priests to encourage Eucharistic Adoration at a parochial level rather than organising central events as happened with the Year of Faith and the Year of Mercy. - Autumn 2018: Study days for R.E. Coordinators, Heads of R.E. and school chaplains. - The Feast of All Saints: Bishop Swarbrick will call all members of the school community to holiness. - Friday 23rd November: Holy Hour in all schools. - Lent 2019: Schools gather in clusters for Eucharistic Adoration focusing on the sacrifice of Jesus. - 20th June 2019: Eucharistic Processions in each Deanery. - 22nd November 2019: Bishop Swarbrick closes the Year of the Eucharist. Schools will look to participate in their local parishes at the Feast of Christ the King, National Youth Sunday. NCW MD AF 2

Some additional ideas Artwork A central part of the Blessed Sacrament procession will be the creation of a Eucharistic Infiorata or ‘flower carpet’ All schools involved will make a section. It is intended that the guidance for these carpets will be produced by secondary school art departments and each primary school will complete a section. They will probably be created out of tissue paper rather than flowers. NCW MD AF 5
Reflecting on works of art. The Education Service will provide teachers with ideas for how to use works of art to deepen students’ understanding of the Eucharist. These will be short reflections to use in class assemblies or form time. Some suggested works of art are: - The Holy Trinity by Rublev; - The Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio; - The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament by Raphael; - Various images of The Last Supper; - Using Hunger Cloths and their representations of the Eucharist and Justice. Some ideas are listed below. - The Divine Praises - Responses to the Eucharistic prayers, sung and spoken. - The Magnificat - Anima Christi - The Rosary - An Act of Spiritual Communion In the humble signs of bread and wine, changed into his body and blood, Christ walks beside us as our strength and our food for the journey, and he enables us to become, for everyone witnesses of hope. If, in the presence of this mystery, reason experiences its limits, the heart, enlightened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, clearly sees the response that is demanded, and bows low in adoration and unbounded love.
