April 2021 Official SOS Newsletter Dance Marathon This year we had the big job of transitioning Dance Marathon into an online event. After a long year of planning and adapting, we are so excited with how our first online Dance Marathon went! This was also the first year that we held a push event to help begin fundraising for Dance Marathon. A huge thank you to the lovely Natasha Verhoeff for helping us out with Zoom into Zumba this year, where we were able to raise $118 towards our final fundraising total! Our theme for this year was 2000s Throwbacks, which unlocked so many memories we forgot we had. This year, Dance Marathon was on March 21st and 22nd this year. On Saturday we had some awesome activities like Name the Song, Throwback Trivia, and Skribblio/Among Us tournaments! On Sunday we were fortunate enough to have amazing performances from Bollywood at Mac, Mac Dance, and the wonderful KPC who even created a SOS Spotlight surprise video just for the event! Overall, the event was so much fun and Name: Ravi Verma everyone had an amazing time, which Position: Dance Marathon Dance we couldn’t have done without the Director hard work of our subcommittee and the support of the other McMaster clubs! Spending the past few months planning the virtual Dance Marathon with an amazing, passionate group was a much needed way for me to stay engaged with others including the Hamilton community. I love the opportunity to use dance and other fun activities as a way to engage the public and fundraise. Despite being a dance director, being behind the scenes of such a big fundraising initiative provided me the opportunity to learn about and help with the other roles which ultimately left me more well rounded and excited to take on similar roles in the future.
April 2021 Official SOS Newsletter Overall, we’re incredible excited to announce that we were able reach our goal of raiding $2500 for the McMaster Children’s Hospital! Thank you to everyone who donated and came out to Dance Marathon this year. We’d also like to say a HUGE thank you to the incredible businesses who supported us by donating towards our raffle prizes! We could not have done what we did without the support we received from the Hamilton community, SOS, friends, and family. We are excited to see Dance Marathon grow for years to come and are glad we were able to make such a big difference for the children at McMaster Children’s Hospital! SOS Spotlight Name: Yun-Yi Cui Position: Smiles Squad subcomittee member I wanted to contribute my time and skills to improving the wellbeing of children in Hamilton, knowing this past year has been especially difficult due to the isolation and uncertainties caused by the pandemic. I loved my experience on Smiles Squad in first year and vividly remember the excited smiles and laughter of the children as they engaged with the activities we pre- pared during Pumpkin Hike, carnivals, and so much more. I hope that I, along with the other amazing Smilies, can help the SOS team stay virtually and emotionally connect- ed to the community as we get through the challenges of this year.
April 2021 Official SOS Newsletter Ron Joyce Although SOS’s Ron Joyce subcommittee looked a lot different this year than previously, we still managed to engage with clients and have some fun. In the fall, our subcommittee members helped out with moving the cheer program onto the virtual platform. We had many Zoom dance parties and learned cheer moves from Hamilton Tiger-Cats cheerleaders. Subcommittee members also participated in the Sprinkle Series during the winter break. RJCHC hosted a week of fun activities for clients such as arts and crafts, drumming, painting, science experiments, dancing and many more fun events. Both volunteers and children had a blast! During the spring, our subcommittee hosted virtual Bingo Nights for the children. The children loved Bingo, especially our customized Bingo cards where participants were asked to do fun activities. For next term SOS Ron Joyce is looking forward to leading the Wall of Wonder initiative. Subcommittee members will lead sessions with teenagers from the center to create multimedia artwork pieces that tell their story. Members will work in small groups with clients in order to develop their digital communication skills while building their self-confidence at the same time. We are looking forward to seeing the amazing work that the SOS and RJCHC partnership will lead to. From the moment I first stepped into the RMH for my first volunteer shift, it felt like a home away from my (student) home. Volunteering here is one of my fondest undergrad memories at McMaster and one I am eternally grateful for. Even on days I felt extremely low on energy, coming here was like an automatic recharge; talking to the families and staff, baking brownies in the house kitchen, and cleaning in the toy room are activities that would always make my week. Volunteering virtually now was for sure an SOS Spotlight interesting adjustment, but it has also been just as rewarding; sending valentines and making Name: Yusra Naqvi cookbooks remind me why I first wanted to Position: Ronald McDonald House volunteer here in the first place; to provide love subcomittee member and support for the families, even if I have to do it 100 km away
