7/30/2019 2020 Census, Boston Mini-Grant Application 2020 Census, Boston Mini-Grant Application The Census is a constitutionally required nationwide survey conducted once every 10 years by the U.S. Census Bureau to count ALL of those, regardless of any particular status, living in the United States. The data collected by the Census: - determines the number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and influence in the Electoral College, - informs redistricting, defining congressional districts, state legislative districts, and local city council districts for the decade, and - directs more than $675 billion in federal funding to states and cities. The Census has a big impact on the services Boston and its neighborhoods receive. Mayor Martin J. Walsh is committed to supporting, developing and advocating for the most accurate, inclusive, and equitable count of ALL Bostonians regarding the U.S. 2020 Census. To that end, the City of Boston is accepting applications for mini-grants to fund Boston-based and "hard-to-count" (HTC) serving non-profit organizations to develop and implement education, awareness, and mobilization strategies. The Mayor's Office of Intergovernmental Relations will receive applications and administer grants. The percentage of Boston’s population that lives in HTC tracts makes it the ninth hardest to count city in the nation when measured against the 100 largest U.S. cities. In Massachusetts, Boston has the largest total number of people living in HTC tracts (almost 415,000 people in 2014).
