In faith and hope and love … In faith and hope and love … 4 Christ, our hope and our reward; our redeemer and our Lord. THE PRAYER OF PREPARATION Let us pray. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. KYRIE ELEISON Sung by the Choir Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Missa in Tempore Quadragesimae – Michael Haydn (1737-1806) THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off. Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Let us pray. God of our ancestors, whose chosen servant Abraham was given faith to obey your call and go out into the unknown: endow your Church with such faith that we may follow you with courage; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 3
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The people are seated for the Bible readings. THE FIRST READING Jeremiah 1.4-10 Read by Tom Jones A reading from the Prophecy of Jeremiah. 4Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, 5 ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ 6Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’ 7But the LORD said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.’ 9Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, ‘Now I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.’ Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM 27.1-8 Please join in saying the verses of Psalm 27 printed in bold. 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?: the Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, come upon me to devour me: they shall stumble and fall. 3 If an army encamp against me, my heart shall not be afraid: and if war should rise against me, yet will I trust. 4 One thing I have asked from the Lord, which I will require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, 5 To see the fair beauty of the Lord: and to seek his will in his temple. 6 For he will hide me under his shelter in the day of trouble: and conceal me in the shadow of his tent, and set me high upon a rock. 7 And now he will lift up my head: above my enemies round about me. 8 And I will offer sacrifices in his sanctuary with exultation: I will sing, I will sing praises to the Lord. 4
THE SECOND READING Philippians 1.12-25 Read by Canon Assoc. Prof Avril Brereton. A reading from the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Philippians. 12I want you to know, beloved, that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel, 13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ; 14and most of the brothers and sisters, having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, dare to speak the word with greater boldness and without fear. 15Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. 16These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defence of the gospel; 17the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. 18What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will result in my deliverance. 20It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that by my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 22If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. 23I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; 24but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 25Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL Please stand Luke 24.36-49 Please repeat the acclimation after the Cantor, then as indicated O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you prosper. Peace be within your walls: and prosperity in your palaces. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 5
36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ 37They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ 40And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ 42They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate in their presence. 44Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’ For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. THE SERMON The Ven. Canon Heather Patacca The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. Accept and use our offerings to your glory and for the service of your kingdom: Blessed be God forever. 10
THE HOLY COMMUNION THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. He was tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD Missa in Tempore Quadragesimae –Haydn Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 11
Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ's body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. In faith we acclaim you, O Christ: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. 12

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. THE DISMISSAL HYMN 2 4 Sunbeams scorching all the day; And if Satan, vexing sore, chilly dew-drops nightly shed; Flesh or spirit should assail, prowling beasts about thy way; thou, his vanquisher before, stones thy pillow, earth thy bed. grant we may not faint nor fail. 3 5 Shall not we thy sorrows share, So shall we have peace divine: and from earthly joys abstain, holier gladness ours shall be; fasting with unceasing prayer, round us, too, shall angels shine, glad with thee to suffer pain? such as ministered to thee. 6 Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, ever constant by thy side; that with thee we may appear at the eternal Eastertide. George Hunt Smyttan (1822–70) and Francis Pott (1832–1909) Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard 56i THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL Christ our Saviour draw you to himself, that you may find in him crucified a sure ground for faith, a firm support for hope, and the assurance of sin forgiven and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. THE ORGAN POSTLUDE Improvisation on HEINLEIN: Mr Lachlan Redd, Sub-Organist 14
PRAY WITH US THE WORLD After two weeks since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the rest of the world is appalled by such violent destruction of human life and property, so we continue to pray that God in his love and mercy would soften the hearts of perpetrators who are causing unimaginable damage to lives now and leaving impressionable children with terrifying memories which will last for a lifetime. Humanitarian corridors have failed to materialise, trapping many foreign students for whom we pray God’s courage in adversity, resourcefulness and strength through togetherness. We ask God’s enabling and guidance for Yoon Suk Yeol who has been elected President of South Korea for a five-year term, a conservative who has promised to honour the constitution and parliament, and work with opposition parties but without a clear international relations strategy. COVID has become a deteriorating, dire epidemic causing deaths among elderly, unvaccinated residents of Hong Kong, requiring China’s medical assistance, and our prayers are offered with concern for those who are fearful for their health, threatened with uncertainty, or anxious for ill relatives. Rising food prices in Iraq, have sparked protests. In Lebanon, fuel prices continue to rise. Syrian prices of bread and diesel were expected to increase, but cost of bread and medicines doubled, and prices will continue to rise as people continuing to struggle. We give thanks that Turkey has sought to plug the gap, building flour mills and providing power, as we pray that individually and communally, God would give insightful solutions to daily and lasting difficulties because no money is entering these treasuries. OUR CITY & STATE We are thankful for the further relaxation of restrictions around management of COVID and its variants. Give us grace never to take for granted our rights ahead of our responsibilities to others in our community. We pray for and support businesses trying to survive current difficulties, and hope the current bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games might bring fresh encouragement. THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION The Anglican Church of Melanesia. THE AUSTRALIAN ANGLICAN CHURCH Religious Orders serving within the Anglican Church of Australia. OUR CATHEDRAL We ask God to give Heather rest, and refreshment as she begins her long service leave, and we are thankful for Kirsty’s ministry amongst us; As our Lenten journey continues, we pray for a new and deeper understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, and how we might put ideas into practice in our daily lives.
