CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION LAETARE SUNDAY—MARCH 14 Help Jesus in Disguise Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent (March 14), our diocese will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Your support of this collection serves Jesus in the guise of the poor and vulnerable in some of the most marginalized communities in our world. Catholic Relief Services was founded in 1943 by the Catholic Bishops of the United States to serve World War II survivors in Europe. Since then, with the generous support of our parishioners, CRS has expanded and served over 130 million people in more than 100 countries across five continents. It is the official international humanitarian agency of the Church in the United States. This past year during the global pandemic, CRS is responding in the world’s most vulnerable communities - distributing soap, hygiene kits and personal protection equipment, sharing prevention messages that help minimize risk, and ensuring access in these communities to food and clean water. For over 75 years, their mission has been to assist impoverished and disadvantaged people overseas, working in the spirit of Catholic social teaching to promote the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person. They serve people based solely on need, regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. Within the United States, CRS engages Catholics to live their faith in solidarity with the poor and suffering people of the world. Your support of this collection makes a difference for so many around the globe. To learn more about the collection and the people who benefit, please visit www.usccb.org/catholic-relief. Diocese of Joliet parishioners who wish to support this great work can do so either by giving at their parish on March 14, donating your spare change to one of the many “rice bowl” boxes circulating our diocese, or by giving online. Paz y bien, Most Reverend Ronald A. Hicks Bishop of Joliet Funds received for the Catholic Relief Services collection in the Diocese of Joliet will be disbursed to the USCCB Office of National Collections, for the benefit of the The Catholic Relief Services Collection. MAKING TIME UNCOVERS TIMELESSNESS We begin this third week of Lent with the commands of the Lord found in the Book of Exodus. These words of God are to help guide us and direct our lives according to the greatness of God's plan for us. These commands have been memorized and reflected upon for generations. They invite us to return to the joy of the Creator and the gift of creation and God's hope for us to return to that breath of His that brought everything into being. Found in these commands is the foundation of our relationship with the gift of time and entering a relationship with God who is beyond time. In Exodus, we hear the "Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it Holy." He is giving us a doorway to find Him. The Sabbath is a day marked in time, to be set aside to contemplate and reflect on God who is eternal, timeless, who has no beginning and end. Those are our words and our God is beyond words. The magnitude of the Sabbath and our entering into it is to reconnect and always keep in front of us the embrace of the eternity of our relationship with God. One of the books I keep by my bedside is among the most fascinating reads of my life. I often reread certain pages that I have marked up within it. For me, it is a treasure that speaks to my soul. "The Sabbath" by Abraham Joshua Heschel is an introduction to timelessness being captured in time where the edges of words only serve to trap and describe but never hold the reality of God. He has opened my thinking to explore the sacredness of time. We seem to be always running out of time to get everything done. We seem to never have any time. Yet if we keep the Sabbath as a day of resting in the contemplation of God, we will find holiness and connect with all that is eternal and timeless. The power of holiness is found in this day and even when we mess it up, even when we just check off boxes as if it were like all the other days, its holiness remains because the Lord has blessed it, even if we have not. The power of the Sabbath resides in God and in God alone. That is powerful. In the week we are to seek the eternal in time and space even though it cannot be contained in time and space because it is of God and beyond our constrictions. Can we get to that place where every thought of ours is constricting because God is not limited by our words, thoughts or actions? To sit in time and contemplate timelessness we magnify the Creator. It will be this relationship that can begin to uncover and even deepen the reality of this perfect love who sent Jesus to us to be born in time to suffer and die for our sins. The magnitude of this majestic act can be lifted to an even more meaningful place in our lives when we sit in the holiness of the Sabbath and embrace it as it was meant to be. Our search for holiness is to be rooted in where God told us the holiness could be found, on the Sabbath. God did not rest on the Sabbath because He was tired out and exhausted in the six previous days of creation. We are not to rest on the Sabbath because we are tired from all the work of the week. The holiness of the Sabbath is found in the joy of running into the loving embrace of all that the Creator has invited us to find in this time marked out for us to transcend time. The holiness of the Sabbath is a dedicated time of this world to reflect on the timelessness and eternity of God. If we do it well, we can sing with God who has created all things and created us in His image. This is not easy and is hard work. Society has long left the Sabbath to be a day to catch up instead of a day to be drawn in. Heschel writes "Creation is the language of God, Time is His song, and the things of space the consonants in the song. To sanctify time is to sing the vowels in unison with Him.” Who doesn't want to sing with God? Who doesn’t want to be in harmony with God? Keep Holy the Sabbath and the door will open... LENTEN SACRIFICIAL PROJECT These are difficult times as many of our friends and neighbors are being affected by the impact of the pandemic. The St. Vincent de Paul Society can help bridge the gap financially in the short term if someone is going through a tough time. They also have access to an extensive list of resources across Kendall County. Providing spiritual support and walking with our neighbors during tough times are also an important part of our mission. To assist St. Vincent DePaul in their mission, this year’s Lenten Sacrificial Project will be to help fund the society so that they can meet the needs of our parishioners and neighbors. Donations can be made to: St. Vincent de Paul Society and mailed to PO Box 670, Oswego, IL. Thank you for your generosity in bringing their assistance to those in need in our area. During Lent we are called to Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Page Eight Third Sunday of Lent March 7, 2021 View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
St. Vincent de Paul Society Gospel Reflection In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked, “What sign can you show us?” Every day we can see signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing to others. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please suggest that they call/contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can be a sign of God’s love to the suffering and poor. Please call 630-554-1425 to leave a voice message or email to: Contact Cathy Gillooly or Julie Krakora in the RE Office 630-554-1425 reo@stanneparish.org—Cathy Gillooly, DRE K-5 jhdre@stanneparish.org—Julie Krakora, DRE 6-8 K-5 Family Faith Formation One of the two possible Gospel readings for the 3 rd Sunday of Lent is the story of the Woman at the Well. It continues the theme of transformation that we focused on last week. When the Samaritan woman encounters Jesus, her life is forever changed by His love for her. Jesus offers her mercy, and she turns away from her life of sin. Jesus offers her living water, and she comes to believe that he is truly the Messiah. Jesus offers each of us that same loving mercy, that same living water. We, too, can turn away from our sin and be transformed. What fears, anxieties, disappointments, shame, grudges, or hatred do you need Jesus to cleanse from your life? How can you share the Good News of Jesus’ living water with others? Themes guiding JH formation Depending on which readings you heard at Mass, this synopsis might make sense: from grumbling to gift. The Israelites grumbled at Moses for their utter thirst in the desert. Then in the Gospel from John, Jesus, at the hottest part of the day, tells the rejected woman at the well that He has water to offer so that she (us all) will never go thirsty. How often do we grumble about doing the things of spiritual value but later find gift? (Yes, I hear the grumbling and I hear from the teens that what they complained about was the best part of their formation.) One of those things? Prayer time: life-giving time with Jesus to nurture and sustain a personal relationship. Today, and next Sunday, our DASH 3 teens will be meeting on Zoom to hear one of 4 chosen speakers from an awesome Catholic conference. All speakers ultimately share the message that knowing Jesus (comes from prayer/communication) and trusting in Jesus is needed. And, showing up as you are – belief or unbeleif and all – is perfect. Pray for our youth, those closer to choosing Confirmation and those further away, to choose living water – Jesus. Many are struggling because our world makes it easier for people to grumble against what is good and holy, rather than against what doesn’t produce good fruit.
