Scri pture Read ing... Sunday: The Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral Casting a Net Is 56:1,6-7 Ps 84:3-5,10-11 1 Cor 3:9c-11,16-17 M Lk 19:1-10 y Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Monday: On this fourth of July, as our nation celebrates the 244th anniversary of its Gn 28:10-22a Independence from Great Britain, we at the Cathedral will be commemorating the Ps 91:1-4,14-15ab rededication and consecration of our Cathedral, which took place on July 4, 1903. Mt 9:18-26 Many of you know that our Cathedral suffered a devastating fire in 1901, but what is not well Tuesday: known is that it was remodeled and rebuilt over two years at a cost of $80,000. At that time, Gn 32:23-33 the Cathedral parish numbered 950 families according to the parochial report. On July 4 of Ps 17:1b,2-3,6- 1903, during the episcopacy of the first bishop of Grand Rapids, the Most Reverend Henry 7b,8ab,15 Richter, the Cathedral of Saint Andrew was consecrated. It was the most solemn function ever Mt 9:32-38 seen by the residents of Grand Rapids, particularly because the Apostolic (papal) Delegate to the U.S. was present and accompanied by three other Archbishops, nine bishops, and more Wednesday: than one hundred priests. Gn 41:55-57; 42:5-7a,17-24a The rededication and consecration of our beloved Cathedral was a day memorable for years in Ps 33:2-3,10-11, the history of our parish and is commemorated each year on the Fourth of July by a solemn 18-19 Mass ranking as a first-class feast. This year, the solemnity takes precedence over the Mt 10:1-7 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Therefore, you will notice that the readings will be different since they are taken from the Common of the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Thursday: Church. Gn 44:18-21,23b- 29; 45:1-5 Most of us will be also celebrating with family and loved ones an event that happened 244 Ps 105:16-21 years ago. There is much to be grateful for as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our nation. Mt 10:7-15 As a naturalized immigrant who has lived here for more than 20 years, I am tremendously indebted to our country as it tries to live up to the noble and inspiring sentiments that gave it Friday: birth, namely the freedom of all to seek life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I continue Gn 46:1-7,28-30 regarding these values while celebrating the best of our nation’s tapestry woven by its Ps 37:3-4,18-19,27- transcendent principles, its land, and the hard work and determination of its diverse people. 28,39-40 As a patriot I also grieve when we fail to live up to the ideals of our nation’s founding fathers or Mt 10:16-23 when we value political self-interest instead of the common good. As we prepare to celebrate Saturday: our nation’s independence, I hope we can exercise the virtue of patriotism. Wear it proudly as Gn 49:29-32; you pray for our country, our leaders, and our people, especially for those who are left out of 50:15-26a the celebration. Ps 105:1-4,6-7 Mt 10:24-33 I invite you to join us at Mass this weekend to give thanks to God for the mother church of our diocese and to recommit ourselves to working for the principles enshrined in the noble words Sunday: of the Declaration of Independence. A blessed Fourth of July to you and Fifteenth Sunday your loved ones! in Ordinary Time Am 7:12-15 In Christ’s Peace, Ps 85:9-14 Eph 1:3-14 Mk 6:7-13 Very Rev. René Constanza, CSP Pastor/Rector Fr.
