From Fr. Aaron’s Desk… Liturgical Schedule and Mass Intentions ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ “ Where were you when the world stopped turning ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ on that September day?… Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke risin’ Monday, September 13 against that blue sky? Did you shout out in 8:15 am Mass anger in fear for your neighbor or did you just sit 4:00 pm Eucharistic Adoration down and cry?” Tuesday, September 14 These are the opening lyrics to an Alan Jackson song, 8:15 am Mass - School Liturgy (Grades 1 through 8) Where Were You. It is a powerful, beautiful, and I would say even challenging song. This weekend marks the Wednesday, September 15 20th Anniversary of that fateful September day. A day 8:15 am Mass that changed life forever. As I write this article I can † Dennis Loughney remember where I was on September 11, 2001. I was in sixth grade in the middle of music class. My teacher Thursday, September 16 took us into the cafeteria and explained to us that a 8:15 am Mass plane had crashed into a building in New York. My sixth- 5:00 pm Reconciliation grade brain was trying to figure out why class was stopped for what seemed to be an accident. I knew Friday, September 17 something serious was happening when my parents 8:15 am Mass had me stay home from school after lunch. I remember 3:30 pm Wedding watching the news still not totally comprehending what • James Gordon and Maureen Maquiddang was going on. Saturday, September 18 That evening everybody put a lit candle on their front 4:00 pm Mass* (AL) porch and all the neighbors gathered to pray an Our Sunday, September 19 Father. The little stuff did not matter. The quarrels and 7:15 am (AL), 9:00 am (XAV), 11:00 am (LB) Masses irritations of daily life vanished now to be replaced with † Carl Volkoff shock, grief, and fear. The next evening my parish held † Ken Ramus a prayer service in the evening. Living just three blocks † Ben Kosmatka away I remember walking to church that night with my † Greg Klosowski friends wanting me to stay and play whatever game they † Stanislaw Nyslinski were playing at the time. I knew it was better to go to † Jack and Audrey Kane church. Life was never the same and our young people, † Frank Harycki sadly, don’t know what a “Pre 9/11” world is like. † Frank Bohdan Our prayers turn to the families who had their loved † Joseph Skreczko ones senselessly taken away from them. Reliving the • The living and deceased members events and seeing the footage over and over each year of St. Mary Catholic Faith Community cannot be easy. We, as their brothers and sisters, grieve AL: Fr. Aaron Laskiewicz with them, our hearts ache with them, and we continue LB: Fr. Leonard Barbian to move on together. We pray in thanksgiving for the XAV: Xaverian Missionary Fathers incredible heroism of not only that day, but in the days that followed. There is no telling how many lives were saved by the heroism and bravery of so many that day. Perhaps the best way to honor this anniversary is to Wedding Banns do what we did twenty years ago. Unite. People came III James Gordon and Maureen Maquiddang together in remarkable ways looking to help someone I Anthony Casazza and Brooke Schoenherr else rather than find fault. People of various faiths, or even none at all, relied on God like never before. Indeed, we were united. I will close this reflection with the words of our Holy Father Pope Francis from his visit Now that school is in session, the Bell Tower doors and to Ground Zero in 2015: the three main church doors will open at 7:45 am for “ This place of death became a place of life too, 8:15 am Mass, Mondays through Fridays. a place of saved lives, a hymn to the triumph of life over the prophets of destruction and death, to goodness over evil, to reconciliation and unity We have brought back the rolling cart shelves to the over hatred and division.” entrances of church. Please return your Orders of God Bless America! Worship to the shelves after all Masses. Thank you.

Social Concerns and Outreach ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ Haiti Update, Post-Earthquake Haitian Proverb: Piti Piti Zwazo Fe Nich Li. - or - Little by Little, the Bird Builds It Nest. For our sisters and brothers in Latiboliere, this is not only a proverb, but the hard reality, as they struggle to rebuild after the August 14 Earthquake - just five years after Hurricane Matthew ravaged the area. For them, patience, persistence, and prayer are the only ways to restore life, a little at a time. Because of your generosity we have been able to get food, water, and medicine to the village of Latiboliere (our sister parish for twenty years). This thank you was sent to you from the St. Mary Committee in Latiboliere: “We thank you so much for your support and the way you feel very concern. As usual St. Mary is the first one to help us. May God bless you!” In addition, we have been able to secure a shipment from Food for the Poor. These items will arrive in Latiboliere this week: rice, beans, peas, corn, cornmeal, flour, oil (cooking), spaghetti, canned fish, canned meat, canned milk, peanut butter, candles, hygiene kits, soap, medications and medical supplies for the Clinic (more detail can be offered when available), tarps, and tents. These supplies will be used directly to serve the over 300 people who have no homes and are staying in the shelter, and other supplies will be provided to families who have shelter but lack food and other basic supplies. Our parish’s Mission Appeal weekend is still scheduled for September 25 - 26. Pe Octave will not be able to join us, because he is needed in Latiboliere to coordinate relief efforts. Any dollar spent on travel is a dollar that can’t be used for the people’s immediate needs. We hope to host him here at St. Mary in the late spring.
