This tournament has become the premier event of their golfing year and is a warm-up for all the boys and girls teams for the District and State events. There will be approximately 120 players competing. A large part of the success of The Donald Ross Memorial Tournament has been due to the contributions and the participation from our members. Club News from Paul T he staff and I are looking forward to season being right around the corner. We believe you will find the golf course to be in outstanding condition this fall and winter. All major course maintenance projects are now complete. Over the last several weeks greens, fairways, tees and approaches were aerated, verti-cut and top dressed with sand for the second time this summer. Tree roots throughout the course have been pruned, several pesticide treatments to the turf along with pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide and fertilizer applications applied. All asphalt throughout the course has been sealed. The clubhouse and pro shop were also spruced up along with the parking lot and front circle being freshly sealed during the Club’s annual shut down for general maintenance. Golf and Social events get rolling in October. Volunteers to help with registration and scoring are needed on Monday, October 7th as Sara Bay will host the 25th Annual Donald Ross Memorial High School Invitational Tournament. This tournament is scheduled one week prior to the high school district competitions and is widely recognized as one of the top high school golf tournaments in the state, please contact Daren King at dking@sarabaycc.org if you are available to help. The following weekend Sara Bay will host the Florida Men’s Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship, Friday, October 11th through the 13th. The WGA Opening Day tournament is set for Thursday, October 17th and the sign-up sheet is posted in the Pro Shop for the Fall Member-Member Tournament that will take place on Sunday, October 20th. Our first Speaker Series & Italian Buffet is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30th and the WGA Autumn Scramble, Luncheon and Business Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 31st. On Wednesday, November 6th we will hold our first “Game Night” of the season. This year, instead of offering only bingo in the Willow Room, the Entertainment Committee is offering mahjong in the Palm Room and card games in the Grill Room. A buffet dinner is served from 5:30 until 6:30 and games will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in helping coordinate mahjong or card games please send an email to pbarone@sarabaycc.org. Other November events include a Veterans’ Day themed Welcome Back Golf Tournament & Dinner on Sunday, November 10th. Name that Tune on Wednesday, November 13th, Sara Bay Night at the Sarasota Opera House on Thursday, November 14th, Chef’s Cooking Class on Tuesday, November 19th and our Grand Thanksgiving Buffet on Thursday, November 28th. Missing from our November event schedule this year is the Annual Joe Turnesa Memorial Scholarship Tournament. Several factors played a roll in sunsetting the tournament, however, the scholarship fund is still alive and well. To date the fund balance is just shy of $225,000, mostly through contributions from Sara Bay members, and 85 scholarships have been awarded to deserving area high school students. Moving forward The Community Foundation of Sarasota County will assist with scholarship selections and ATTENTION OWNER anyone interested in contributing to the fund may make their tax deductible contribution directly to MEMBERS The Community Foundation by referencing the Joe Turnesa Memorial Scholarship. Membership News G reetings Sara Bay Members! Where did the summer go? Although it has been a wetter than normal season, it certainly has not dampened the activity at the Club. Our summer membership program has kept the tee sheet comfortably busy and we anticipate that a good percentage of the summer members will convert to regular membership as of November 1st. The golf course conditioning gets better every week, as the efforts of our grounds crew are noticeable in the grooming and attention to details. Visiting members from reciprocal clubs are quick to comment on the overall course appearance and turf conditions. Sara Bay remains on the top of the list as the course that must be experienced. As we approach the fall season the Admissions Committee is focused on getting our name out there through social media and digital marketing. We will be launching a new and refreshed web site that will attract prospective members who are searching the internet for a private golf club. Watch your email for the announcement of the exact date that the web site will be active. Also, we will continue to offer the 30 or 60-day trial membership, which historically has proven to be an excellent source for recruiting new members. Additionally, the Committee is analyzing other incentives to motivate prospects to join the Club. Several members have indicated they are not receiving email communications from the Club, so if that is the case, please contact the office so that we can re-subscribe your account. It is the mission of your staff that we exceed the expectations of the members and be recognized as one of the finest Donald Ross golf clubs. Golf News from Daren COUPLES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP T his year’s Gross Division was determined by one stroke, while the Net Division was won by a reasonable margin over their nearest competitor in the 36 Hole Couples Club Championship. Dan & Margaret Mills captured their fifth Couples Gross Division Championship with a one stroke victory over the Defending Champions Randy & Laurie Spring. The Mill’s held a four-stroke advantage over the Spring’s starting the final round after firing an opening round 82 in the Better Ball of Partners format. The Mill’s extended their lead by eight shots over the Spring’s during the final round of the difficult alternate shot Pinehurst format, to capture the Championship with a final round 86 and a two-day total of 168. The Spring’s 86-83 (169) total made a gallant effort to defend their title, as they fell short after making up seven strokes on the Champions on the final nine holes. Ed & Linda Hagen took home their third Net Division Championship. The Hagen’s held a four-shot lead over Michael & Susan Fradkin after making nine birdies and an eagle enroute to an opening round score of 61. The Hagen’s maintained their lead after scoring a final round 66 (127) total. Cary & Debby Spicuzza also scored a 66 during the Pinehurst format to Overtake several teams to grab second place. Our new theme song has been “Rain rain go away” I hope that everyone has a “guaranteed waterproof” rain suit and has been able to stay dry……if not, I’ll be happy to help you with your purchase. It’ll certainly make for a greener golf course. It’ll soon be time for me to go to the golf show where they will be showing the new fall fashions which will be featured in Daren’s golf shop. So while we are still in September think “Christmas” and shop early. Liz Findley | Merchandiser 8
From Tee to Green T he excessive rain in July and August has caused frustration for the agronomy department, it is difficult to keep all areas consistently mowed and trimmed due to the saturation and it can really take its toll on course conditions. Thankfully however, applications of plant growth regulator on tees, fairways, and approaches helps to keep growth at a somewhat manageable level. We are hopeful that these next few months will get us out of this rainy weather pattern allowing the team to catch back up and continue to improve our playing surfaces. Above average rainfall in July and August also increased weed and insect pressure. Frequent applications of herbicide and insecticides are needed to help keep both populations in check. There may be some areas of temporary discoloration from herbicide applications. Although we treated the fairways, tees, and approaches this spring for mole crickets, we are still seeing breakthrough and these areas have been sprayed and continue to receive treatments. As always, we will continue to monitor the conditions and keep the courses open as much as possible to minimize your inconvenience and Frank Lerner minimize any damage caused by cart traffic as Hole #8 | 154 yards well as damage from our maintenance equipment. 7 Iron August 2 Carlyle Merring | Golf Course Superintendent Patrick Doyle Hole #4 | 109 yards Pitching Wedge August 3 Golf Schedule September 2019 Monday, September 2 LABOR DAY - Open Golf 8:00am Wednesday, September 18 Men’s Member Guest Stag Day October 2019 Monday, October 7 Donald Ross High School Invitational - Volunteers Needed Wednesday, October 16 Men’s Member Guest Stag Day Thursday, October 17 WGA Season Begins Sunday, October 20 Fall Member-Member Thursday, October 31 WGA Autumn Scramble - Opening Luncheon & Meeting 9
History Speaks I thought it would be interesting to share some of the formation of the club and Whitfield Estates. Research is ongoing and hopefully new information will be added or brought to light. Below is the first part of the article. It was reported in the September 18, 1924 issue of the Tampa Times, that the Delaplane-Price Development purchased 218 acres from the estate of Richard T. Ringling, son of Alfred Ringling for over $250,000. The property was purchased through EA Smith of the Sarasota Development Company. The property has a bay frontage of more than a mile. Another parcel of 335 acres was acquired from H.B. Williams Co. for $155,750, the following day. This property was opposite of the Richard Ringling Estate. Ringling Savings and Trust was run by Charles Ringling’s son in law, Louis Lancaster. They would eventually acquire 682/1100 acres of property for the development to be known as Whitfield Estates. On October 31, 1924, a group of individuals led by L.B. Whitfield, D.G. Haley, E.H. Price, and Edwin S. Delaplane, filed with the Florida Secretary of State a proposed charter for a corporation named Whitfield Estates, Inc. Whitfield was financier, also served as President of the Alaga Syrup in Montgomery, AL. Haley was a Jacksonville attorney and Whitfield’s brother-in-law. Haley, Deleplane, Whitfield’s father-in-law and Price travelled in the same social circles and attended many events together. The acquisition of the property was in 5 transactions of various sizes of property ranging from 40-335 acres. The corporation was led by the officers, Whitfield as President and Haley as Secretary and Treasurer, as listed in the filings. On November 10, 1924 the stockholders were to convene and elect the officers. The corporation had a desire to create a master plan for Whitfield Estates to include an 18 hole golf course, yacht club, business district and a tourist hotel overlooking Sarasota Bay as well as man made islands in the bay. Original plans called for the Ringling house, not far from Whitfield Estates to be moved to become the clubhouse. Eventually Smith and Pringle from Atlanta were chosen to build the clubhouse. In January of 1925, Adair Realty and Trust Company was announced as the selling agent for Whitfield Estates. Sales of the property began on January 20, 1925. Adair was the nation’s oldest real estate firm, it was the first time Adair had been active in selling Florida real estate. The first phase consisted of the area south of Whitfield and west of Tamiami Trail. There were 318 lots in this phase, all were sold. The second phase consisted of the area north of Whitfield and west of Tamiami Trail. On January 14 of 1925 , it was reported that E.A. McGovern, a representative of Donald Ross was on the ground for a few days looking at the property. Donald Ross was set to arrive the following day, and had his choice of property on which to build a championship course. The Evening Independent, reported on Jan 27, 1925 that Ross, Walter Hatcher, an associate of Ross, E.H. Price of the Delaplane Price Company and Bobby Jones, amateur golfer walked the property for several days and chose the 150 acres which is the current location of Sara Bay.
