Chairman’s Report August 2020 Hi Everyone, It’s hard to believe that one year has passed in this position as Chairman, what with lockdown and all the challenges it has brought I believe we have come through all of it stronger as a club. We have had record numbers at our functions being run to Redwood Farm (over 100 members and friends), brunch run (approx 80 people) and our mid Christmas run and dinner (80 people), well done everyone. Let’s keep it up and we will keep trying to organise interesting runs and meetings to follow. Our next meeting is our AGM 10th August and it is not too late to put your name forward to be on the committee or any position you would like to take on, just con- tact our Secretary Michael and he will do the rest. As it is the end of the club year people ask to retire from different positions and this year Paul Beck is retiring as the Klaxon editor after 6 years, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all members and recipients of the Klaxon to say a very big thanks for all the hard work you have put into the Klaxon Paul, to make it a magazine that people look forward to receiving each month. Whilst Paul is retiring from this position he will be staying as a valued member and assisting Yvonne with the library; well done Paul. As well as the AGM on Monday night we have an announcement and discussion to make for our swap meeting weekend on Sunday 1 st November, come along and find out about our proposal. See you there, Ken New Member There have been no notifications of new members this month Please contact our Chairman if you have not received your name badges by our next meeting. 6
Your Klaxon Editor Paul Beck Contact Paul at klaxoninfo@gmail.com Hi Everyone, After 6 years of producing Klaxon I have decided to pass the reins over to someone else. I have enjoyed producing it and getting a great satisfaction when I finally see the effort each month finally hit the print. It is very satisfying but the work doesn't stop there. I found myself being very critical of my own work and noting small mis- takes or improvements for the next issue. However the effort is not all mine. A massive thank you must surely go to Yvonne who each month reads and analyses each issue to correct my bad punctuation or spelling mistakes. Sometimes generating a big discussion as to how to express things and get the real meaning across. I never did score highly in English at school but I didn't ever let that get in my way of a good story. There is an old saying which I have modified slightly but meaning the same. “If you are not learning then you can’t be alive.” Also as well, “there is something to learn each day.” It appears as though we have someone to take Klaxon on now and while I cannot disclose names I would like to say a big thank you. The magazine I believe is a necessary part of the VCC to keep the club bonding. Necessary for our survival. Emails only deal with local members but the magazine reaches a much wider audi- ence. There are also a number of members out there to whom I am most thankful for their contributions of titbits and items. I say a big thank you again. I hope you continue to support the new editor. It was pleasing to see Maurice and Val Nottle presented with their 60 year badges at our last meeting. Maurice didn't ever say much about it but I think he has al- ways been sorry that he was never a founding member of the club. He saw the notice calling for members but did not attend that meeting. While that may have been the case he has contributed much to running of the club over the 60 years of his membership and maintained his contact where possible with those founding members. May I say to Maurice one more time, thank you for your efforts and your contributions to the Klaxon which have been well appreciated. Our deck chairs await us as I sign off, Paul 7
MID-WEEK RUNAROUND - by Peter Woodend Whilst a few may have declined, or in spite of, the continuous rain, eighteen cars assembled at the Baywave Carpark, half of which were all-weather moderns, all for a run with a difference! Firstly, we were directed through the various maturing sub-divisions of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In retrospect, The Palms at Papamoa, originally thought of as an ‘expensive’ and slow to develop outer-suburb with wider main thoroughfares and diverse property styles, does not now look so bad. But with the guidance sheet on the clipboard, steamed-up windows and concentration through multiple rounda- bouts probably did not allow overly much critical recognition of individual architec- tural styling! Progressing on through the more recent, and still currently expand- ing sub-divisions, where the sections themselves have seemingly become progres- sively smaller, in single storey building styles more regular and repetitive (drab was another deleted adjective). Each of the new inhabitants doubtless enjoying their own (smaller) ‘slice of paradise’ albeit 15-20km from the hub. And then via new roading for even more proposed homes on hitherto undeveloped land; the original old farm buildings looking like lost souls in desolation. All places that one would not normally go to, so eye-opening. After the sub-division tiki-tour the run embraced 20km of the switchback Old Coach Road, necessitating constant gear-changing to cope with sudden inclines, and hairpin corners, although was remarkably free from other traffic, allowing ‘social-distancing’ of club cars at a regular speed. One could not but wonder about the perils of traversing a four-in-hand team in the old day. Destination Otamarakau, at the rambling property of Paul and Sandy, where B-B- Q facilities were provided for a BYO (sausage sizzle!) , all being conveniently accom- modated in a double garage out of the incessant rain. After refreshments all were invited for viewings of a VW Camper fit-out, and a home construction (in progress) a micro caravan in the tear-drop style. ( by, who should be retired, but isn’t – took the day off anyway) 8

Bunnings Trailer Recall I spotted this article in the recall list and while it has been out for a while thought the notice may have not reached some of our members as yet. Paul Several models of a light trailer sold at Bunnings for 13 years are being recalled because they might detach from the towing vehicle. The Trailpro trailers were sold at the stores between December 2005 and October 2018. The drawbar is at risk of breaking at the front attachment where it bolts to the chassis. Three more models of the trailer have been added to two which were recalled originally in 2018. The NZ Transport Agency, which carried out an investigation on the first two models, said it was first prompted to do so after a report of a trailer breaking free from its towing vehicle in New Zealand. NZTA inspectors had been instructed to not issue warrants of fitness on affected models and to date, 167 WoFs had been revoked. ''As a result of the recall, Bunnings has removed more than 1500 TP1 trailers from New Zealand’s roads and these trailers are unable to attain a new WoF. ''We thank Bunnings for raising these concerns.'' NZTA's analysis found the trailers were not fit for purpose for carrying the rated maximum load. ''The main area of concern is with the bolted connection of the drawbar to the trail- er chassis,'' Knackstedt said, and there were concerns that heavy or frequent com- mercial use could accelerate the hazard. Trailpro owners have been urged to check the identification plate on the side of the trailer's drawbar to confirm the model number. Those with an affected model were urged to stop using the trailer in a loaded ca- pacity immediately and contact Bunnings. The faulty trailers are: Trailpro 7x4 Handyman – Model no. TP1 (A-frame drawbar) Trailpro 500 5X3 – Model no. TP6 (Single drawbar) Trailpro Weekender (A-frame drawbar) Trailpro 8x4 Tradesman - Model no. TP5 (A-frame drawbar) Trailpro 8x5 Tandem - Model no. TP8 (A-frame drawbar) 12
I thought this article might be of interest to some members World’s most famous toy: Photo / SuppliedThe James Bond Aston Martin DB5 There is no rule that says your toy car can’t be actual size. Work has resumed on Aston Martin’s latest “continuation” model, the 1963-5 DB5 Goldfinger — created in association with James Bond film production company Eon. The DB5 featured in the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger is often called the “world’s most famous car”. Each one of the 25 DB5 continuation models being built will cost NZ$5.5 million. None will be road legal. Enjoy. They will, however, have a suite of working gadgets, as seen in Goldfinger. These include rear smoke screen and simulated oil slick delivery, revolving number plates, simulated twin-front machine guns, rear shield, battering rams, tyre slash- er, simulated radar screen, telephone in the driver’s door, gearknob actuator but- ton, armrest/console switchgear, underseat weapons storage and a remote control for gadget activations. Any premium car has to have an options list. On the DB5 Goldfinger you can also order a removable passenger-side roof panel. The construction process takes 4500 hours per car, at Aston Martin’s Heritage Division headquarters in Newport Pagnell. Because it’s a continuation car — tech- nically a brand-new 1965 model — it’s built as much in traditional methods as possible, albeit with some modern engineering enhancements. The cars feature original DB5 styled aluminium exterior body panels wrapped around an authentic DB5 mild-steel chassis structure. Under the bonnet there’s a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine with a sixplug head, three SU carburettors and oil cooler, making around 216kW. This is mated to a fivespeed ZF manual transmission in the rearwheel drive DB5, which also features a mechanical limited slip differential. The gadgets have been developed and integrated in association with Chris Corbould OBE, a special effects supervisor who has worked on more than a dozen Bond films. 13
Book review by Paul Beck No Room for Watermelons - by Ron and Lynne Fellowes There is an old saying that goes, ‘you don’t have to be mad but it can help’. In reading this book I often thought of the saying and quite often even the author at time wondered the same thing. To contemplate a 14,600 km trip on a 1910 FN motorcycle that had no gears, hardly any brakes, hardly any power and required assistance from pedals to enable getting up some hills beggars belief. Then to add to the mix, the route planned was through some of the world’s most hostile territory. Through deserts and over mountains that required pushing the bike because it simply was underpowered and dealing with people in countries where you cannot speak their language was just something that added to the adventure. It also speaks volumes about how generous people can be in some of the most inhospitable parts of the world and how they assisted him along his journey. It was not like that all the way though. In the end he just simply says. It was all part of my dream for which I have ful- filled. To the reader though, the book just takes you along for the ride and it all seems like a continuous nightmare. But it is exciting reading and hard to put down. This book was donated by Alastair Jones and is available in our club library. Enjoy it. Paul New addition to our parts shed The BOP Vintage Car Club wish to welcome the arrival of our latest addition to the clubrooms. While a lot of work has yet to be done. Jack and Colin have been busy shelving it out and started moving parts in. ( I wonder what they will name it?) 14
