PRESIDENTS PAGE Hello to all my fellow Weight Watcher Clubs. I believe most clubs are up and running now after the break we had for approx. 3 plus months. Let us hope this does not happen again. We have certainly had an unusual year. I know that Mandurah W.W. is not starting up until August, I wish you well when you return. I know that a lot of members are still very reluctant to return, but I ask club Presidents to please try and keep in contact with these members. By time you receive this Newsletter we would have held our Annual General Meeting. In the next Newsletter I will bring you up to date on how it went. Clubs who will be at the A.G.M. will receive a copy of the August Newsletter to take back to their club. (we are saving on postage) We will give the clubs attending the Slimmer of The Year presentation a copy of the A.G.M. Minutes and audited financial report. (once again saving on postage) We have had a lot of clubs wanting to order the Members Guide Book, I am sorry this is taking so long, but I have been looking around for a Dietician who will update the current version we have which is I believe about 7 to 8 years old. So, I ask, please clubs be very patient, when we print them up, we will let you know. So currently we only have the 14 Daily Menu Books available. I would like to thank all the clubs who returned their Affiliation & Registration Forms in before the 30th June 2020. We appreciate it very much. SLIMMER OF THE YEAR PRESENTATION This is our next big function for the year. Clubs I ask that you promote this Gala Day, even if you do-not have a nomination. We need to have as many club members attend this day to support all the club’s nominations. We need to have the numbers & money sent into the office before Friday 14th August. Once the money is in, there will be NO REFUNDS. Cost is $30.00 per head. If anyone wishes to bring a family member or friend by all means do so. Everyone will receive a Lucky Door Ticket. TO SET UP THE HALL FOR THE SLIMMER OF THE YEAR IS A HUGE TASK, WHAT YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW IS: ALL THE COMMITTEE ARIVE AT 7.30AM, WE ONLY HAVE ONE MAN ON THE COMMITTEE. WE WOULD LIKE A COUPLE OF MEN TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP US SET UP THE TABLES PLEASE. SO PLEASE CLUB PRESIDENTS CAN YOU ASK AT YOUR CLUB IF ANYONE IS WILLING TO HELP US. GUEST SPEAKERS LIST Heather & I have been going through the Guest Speakers List, as it is so outdated, a lot of names on the current list have now been deleted. I have written up a new list and all clubs will receive a copy of it. Please I ask if you happen to phone any of the people on the list and find they are not available. Let the office know and we will take them off. On the other hand, if your club has guest speakers that other clubs may be able to use, please let the office know and we will add them to the Guest Speaker List. Heather Hodgson (Cannington W.W.) is the new kid on the block in the office. Heather has been working once a week and doing a brilliant job. Well done Heather.
Also I would like to thank Cynthia Baxter (Maylands W.W.) for filling in as Secretary at our committee meetings, and also the A.G.M. you have done an excellent job Cynthia and I am only so sorry you are unable to be the State Secretary. It always saddens me to tell everyone about our clubs closing down This year we have had a lot of club decide not to affiliate with the Federation. Mainly due to the fact, that their members are very mature & numbers are down to 3 & 4 members. I would like to thank all those clubs, committee & members for their long-time association with the Federation. Some of these clubs have been in operation for 50 years. We the Federation say goodbye to the following clubs.
CLUBS CLOSED THIS YEAR. Canarvon W.W., Busselton pending on venue, Mt. Barker, Mundaring W.W., Rockingham Way-In & York. NEW CLUBS OPENED UP OVER THE PAST TWELVE MONTHS. Albany Regional Katanning Regional I do hope both these clubs continue to grow & wish them every success. MORE CLUBS I would like to see more clubs open in the Metropolitan and Regional areas. But I need help from all the clubs. I ask that all clubs put the message out there amongst your club members that just maybe they have family, friends etc. that would like to join a low cost Weight Watchers support group, but they do-not have a club in the area they live in. It only takes a ½ dozen (6) people to rally around and start a club up and members will grow from there. I will help anyone who is interested in starting a club up. We the Federation are having clubs close every year and this year was our worst. There are a lot of new suburbs in W.A. both in the Metropolitan and Regional areas and we do not have clubs in these areas. Our daytime clubs seem to be remarkably successful & we don’t have a lot of them. Let us hope that our numbers grow in all clubs for the 2020-2021 Year. President. Shirley Sardelich
BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS By the time you read this the Belmont club should be meeting again in the RSL Hall. These few months without meetings have really demonstrated the value of a regular weigh in and support group. If my experience (+2 kilos!!) is anything to go by, our treasurer will be groaning under the weight of the fines paid. Once restrictions were relaxed, we had two outdoor meetings at a local park. President Linda announced the results for March. Belated congratulations to: Gold Star – Diane H Grad of the Month – Joyce 3-month Grads – Jean C and Maggie We also awarded loyalty badges for 10 years’ service to Lorraine, Mary, Rosemarie, and Wendy. Well done! Although we had to cancel this year’s Big Morning Tea, we will continue to fundraise for next year with our market days and other events. Our 50th birthday celebration is now scheduled for 27 October. The annual competition with the Moore River club will go ahead as planned to start the first week of July and running to the end of August. Will Moore River keep the trophy, or will it find a new home in Belmont? Only time will tell… BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS We are back! Well equipped with sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and a login sheet, Belmont WW reopened on 23 June. Twenty-four members weighed in and enjoyed a sociable chat before the official start. I will not mention the club’s total weight gain. Let us just say there’s room for improvement! We spent much of our first meeting catching up with club business. Congratulations go to Jean C, who was our Grad of the Year. Mary received the President’s trophy, acknowledging her courage and determination in overcoming health issues. The Phil Hicks trophy went to Sue whose work for the club, especially the Biggest Morning Tea, has been tremendous. Congratulations also to Julie, Maggie and Joyce (tied) who finished first in our competition that was cut short by the lockdown. There were so many birthdays I hope I have them all: best wishes to Lorraine, Marie, Joyce, Sylvia, David, Rosemarie and Andrew. During the shutdown, I ran out of eggs. Unable to run to the shops and not due for an online order, I turned to Google. This recipe is made in a baking tin and tastes surprisingly rich and chocolate-y. It is also fun for kids to mix up and since there’s no eggs or milk I think it would suit vegans.
Wacky Cake 1 1/2 cups (190g) plain flour 1 cup (200g) white sugar 4 tablespoons (20g) unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons (90ml) vegetable oil 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 cup (235ml) water 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. 2. Sift flour, sugar, cocoa, bi carb soda and salt together into a 20 x 20cm ungreased cake tin. Make three depressions. 3. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour water over all and stir well with fork. 4. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Coat with your favourite icing. Note: I used a springform tin and did not ice it. Sent in by Belmont Weight Watchers GREENWOOD WEIGHT WATCHERS Hi to you all, Greenwood Weight Watchers had their Annual General Meeting recently and now have a new President Roberta Clay. Welcome Roberta thank you for saying yes to the position. We must thank our retiring President Michelle Bowers for all the work she has done over the year. Thank you, Michelle, Michelle will continue in the position of Vice President. We will be having our “Christmas in July” this coming week, cannot believe we are halfway through the year already. Instead of presents our members give a ten-dollar donation of goes to the “The Royal Flying Doctor”. How are you all fairing with all rules and hygiene procedures imposed on us due to the virus? Western Australia has been very blessed. All the best getting back on track after our long absence. Stay safe! Susan Wetton
FORRESTFIELD WEIGHT WATCHERS It was a real pleasure to be back at club after so many weeks away and to be rewarded with “ it’s so good to be back” or “we have missed you “ and to have so many (51) return on the first night. Of course the rules of Covid were that we had to clean-clean –clean, but we had lots of help and an added bonus was that our club rooms had been repainted, so it was like coming back to a new club. The minutes of that 1st meeting are slim as we settle back into our routine. But I have already got a competition ready for next week to get us all back on track (hopefully). We were invited to Moore River’s 2020 AGM and as always were VERY warmly welcomed by everyone. Inga (secretary) read out 2019 AGM minutes and I read out the nominations for the committee, which remained unchanged from last year. Dot Branch (President) handed out gifts for a job well done and presented Aileen and I with lovely pot plants. We did not however win a raffle. On the way back from Moore River Aileen and I hashed out new ideas for different ways to motivate our members. But it is hard sometimes as it is a case of “been there –done that.” Aileen commented on how very well organised their club always is and notably how nobody spoke or interrupted at all during the meeting. We do thank you kindly for your invitation, as always-a pleasure. Aileen presented their Slimmer of the Year entrant TERRI WILLIAMS with a blue sash a certificate and $50 ,of course there was lots of happy photos and lots of delish food after, including a very tempting cake which Terri was only too happy to cut and hand out. Before that however there were lots of discussions on their newly edited constitution booklet and ideas for awarding prizes. They were sad that they had to postpone the Country Forum until next year but under the current situation that was the best idea as social distancing might have been a little tricky and they did that with the best interests of everyone. We applaud their decision. The journey to Moore River is sometimes a scenic route adventure with all the road works going on at various places and the intersections being redesigned with NO visible signage we found ourselves taking a couple of wrong turns! We got there on time and at the right venue –so all turned out very well. So, until next time. Keep well. Sheila and Aileen.
ESPERANCE WEIGHT WATCHERS I have been asked by our President if I would write up an article on one of our highly respected and loved lifelong member’s Bethel Norton. Bethel had been part of W.W Esperance for an estimate of 30 years, she served as club Treasurer for 25 years during that time, also writing members birthday cards and never missing members Birthdays. The verses she wrote in each card were fitting to each personality and at 92 years old this is a rare gift. After the meeting Bethel enjoyed her trip to Maccas for afternoon tea and fellowship with other members. Bethel never had to worry about her weight and if she put on weight there would be a round of applause. GALATIANS 5:22 sums it up for Beth for who she was. Bethel left us on the 28th June 2020, but she will live on in the hearts of the many friends in the community and those in Esperance Weight Watchers. Resting where no shadows fall. Our first meeting back after lockdown was attended by 13 members. There was a loss of 10.4kgs and a gain of 11.8kgs perhaps caused by the lockdown munchies, Jenny was our lady of the week with 3.2kg off, Jessika was runner up with a loss 2.5kg off. Members who lost during lockdown were Greg 1.2kg and Jenny with 700 grams, well done to those Members. That is about it from the Bay of Isles until next time keep warm and keep heathy. Jeanette Edwards Vice Secretary Esperance
MOORE RIVER WEIGHT WATCHERS We have had a good month with all our members happily getting back together again. This month we made a trip to the Lavender Farm on the old Yanchep Road. So remarkably interesting how they extract the oil from the lavender. We were given a lovely morning tea with lots of fresh fruits, dates, and lavender flavoured scones. Homemade small lamb pies were my favourite. Lots of goodies to buy in the shop. On the 1st July we had our AGM. This is usually planned early in May but as many clubs we did have to reschedule. All our members were able to be there and as the Federation President was unable to attend this year, we invited two ladies from the Forrestfield club. On the day we also celebrated our Slimmer of the Year, Terri, who has achieved so much. The same Committee members were voted in again this year with only one change which was our new Social Organiser, June. Last Wednesday we started our 6-week interclub competition with Belmont Weight Watchers Club. We won last year, and we are determined to hold onto the trophy. They will be coming to our club this year and we will not know until that day who has won. Our next social event will be inhouse and we are going to have a Healthy Brunch where all members have been asked to bring healthy food with the recipe. I recently found a small journal, in K Mart, called Food + Exercise, only $3.00. A few of our members now have them and we are writing down all the food and drinks we consume during the week and trying to stick to 1000 calories per day. There is a page for each day to record the food and a page for recording the exercise. It definitely helps. It was an extremely hard decision to cancel the Country Forum this year but as we are living in very uncertain times, we thought it best. We will be hosting it next year when things are hopefully back to some normality. Until next time, “Your mind is a Powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts? your life will start to change.” Jae/ Vice President MRWW
HAMERSLEY/WARWICK WEIGHT WATCHERS What an enjoyable evening had by all, so much to catch up with, since our last meeting. Great to be back. A big welcome to our newest member Debbie, we wish Debbie luck in her weight loss journey. Congratulation Jean J, Jean at reaching her goal weight. Nicole has lost 10kg, keep it up Nicole. Well done Sandy and Barbara, it is all worth it. Some members have to work that bit harder, to get back on track. Eat healthy snacks, almonds, blueberries, roasted chickpeas, low fat yogurt, eggs, drink green tea, avocado, watch sugar in take and fats. The plate method. An easy way to eat healthy. Fill half plate with non-starchy vegetables, broccoli, green beans, carrots. Fill ¼ of plate carbohydrate, whole grain bread, pasta, potato, brown rice. Fill other ¼ plate with 90-120g lean meat, poultry, or fish. Focus on the right next move. A little progress each day, adds up to big results. Slow progress is better than no progress at all. Kind Regards Shelley.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST BREAKFAST CEREAL – Column by ANNETTE SYM We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you are busy getting ready for work and getting the kids off to school it makes sense to have something quick and easy. In Australia approximately 80 percent of households start their day with a bowl of cereal. You only have to walk down the cereal aisle in the supermarket to realise just how many options are available. But how do you decide what is healthy? Forget the hype on the front of the pack and go straight to the INGREDIENT LIST and NUTRITIONAL PANEL. Here are some tips: • High sugar cereals are not the ideal choice. Anything that has sugar listed in the first three ingredients should be left on the shelf. • Choose high fibre options as they keep you feeling fuller for longer. You want a cereal with more than 3 grams of fibre per serve. • Cereals can be high in sodium. There is almost as much salt in a bowl of cornflakes or rice bubbles as in a packet of potato chips. For example, per 100g Weet-Bix has 270mg of sodium compared to 550mg in Corn Flakes. • When choosing muesli opt for untoasted varieties as these are lower in fat. My favourite choices are Weet-Bix, Vita Brits, Bran Flakes, Sultana Bran, oats/porridge, and low-fat muesli. If you require gluten free cereal, Freedom Foods have healthy options. Most cereals have vitamins, niacin and folate and minerals added to them so that is a good thing for everyone. No matter what your age, the worst thing to do is not have breakfast. It has been proven that people who do not eat breakfast are more likely to be involved in industrial accidents and children who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight than those who don’t. Teachers can pick which children have missed breakfast as they get tired and generally find it hard to focus mid-morning. Always measure your cereal. Even healthy options can rack up your daily calorie total if you are not careful. A healthy serving size for women is three quarters of a cup and for men one cup. Add some skim milk and a sliced banana or strawberries and you have a quick, easy breakfast. If you struggle to eat breakfast or simply do not have time, my Premium Breakfast Shakes might be a great option for you.
