10Irony of Age
When you are a baby, you’re taken care of by your parents.
When parents grow old, they’re taken care of by their baby.”
Go the Right Speed Limit!
“One night a state cop saw a car going only 22 miles per hour. He pulled the car over. When
he approached the driver’s side, he noticed five old ladies were seated in the car and all of
them looked to be in shock. They were all very pale.
The old lady driver greet him, “Officer, why did you pull me over? I was going the speed
limit exactly. What is the issue?”
‘Ma’am you weren’t going over the speed limit, however driving under the limit is just as
dangerous.”
“But I was going 22 mph, the exact speed limit.”
“No, ma’am, 22 is not the speed limit, it’s the route number,” he laughed.
Feeling embarrassed the older woman thanked him.
“Before I let you go, is everyone ok? The other ladies seem a bit unsettled.”
“Oh, they’ll be fine in a minute. We were just on route 119.”
Tell me Where it Hurts
Sitting in the orthopaedic surgeon’s office cradling my broken hand, I racked my brains but
couldn’t come up with the medical term for my scheduled procedure. “Excuse me,” I said to
the surgeon’s assistant. “What’s the term doctors use for setting a broken bone?”
He grinned and said “A billable procedure”.
115 INGREDIENT CHICKEN AND ZUCCHINI LASAGNE Ingredients 2 large zucchini (500g) 3 cups shredded roast chicken meat (450g) 2 x 400g jars red wine and garlic tomato pasta sauce ½ cup risoni 2 cups grated pizza cheese Method 1. Using a mandolin, cut zucchini diagonally into thin slices (about 5mm wide). 2. Place chicken in a bowl. Stir in 1 ½ cups of the pasta cups. 3. Sprinkle risoni over the base of a rectangular, ovenproof dish (10-cup capactity). 4. Top with half the chicken mixture. Sprinkle with half the cheese. Arrange half the zucchini over cheese. Repeat layering with remaining chicken mixture and zucchini. 5. Pour remaining pasta sauce over zucchini. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Cover tightly with oiled foil. 6. Cook in a moderate oven (180°C) for 45 minutes. Discard foil. Cook for a further 10 minutes, or until zucchini is tender and cheese is golden brown. 7. Transfer lasagne to a wooden board. Stand for 15 minutes before serving. 12
HINTS & TIPS
Try a natural remedy to CLEAN STAINED TEACUPS
• Mix half a cup of boiling water and vinegar in your teacup and let it sit for an hour.
Pour the liquid out and wash well before using.
• Sprinkle bicarb soda onto the bottom of your teacups and add just enough water to
form a paste, then scrub. Rinse and wash as you normally would.
• Dampen a cloth or use a sheet of paper towel to rub the stained surface with salt for
a quick and effective way to remove stains.
Don’t throw out old kitchen sponges. Cut them into pieces and put them in the bottom of
pot plants to retain moisture and prevent losing soil through the drainage holes.
When freezing mince in a bag, flatten it out with a rolling pin before putting in the freezer.
This quickens the time it takes to defrost.
To tell if an egg is fresh, pop it in a bowl (or glass) of water. If it’s stale, it will float up.
STORING AVOCADOS
It prevent avocados turning brown because you don’t use them all at once place the cut
avocado, cut-side down, in a small container of water. Seal with the lid. Keep in the fridge
for up to 24 hours. Before using, pat the avocado dry with a piece of absorbent kitchen
paper.
COOL RELIEF
If you are struggling to sleep because you are hot, fill a hot water bottle with iced water and
place it under your ankle or knees – it will help to cool your entire body.
Before poaching or frying eggs, put them in hot water for a couple of minutes before
cracking them. This way they won’t spread too much and will maintain a good shape when
cooked.
