A MESSAGE FROM THE
PRINCIPAL

The leadership team and staff at Penrith Anglican College are working hard to best manage the various
challenges presented and minimise the impact of the COVID-19 situation.

As you will see in this guide, the College has been planning for this contingency to ensure that
teaching and learning can continue from Pre-K to Year 12 including Learning Support, Enrichment and
Student Wellbeing services.

Please join me in keeping the College and the wider situation in your prayers.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and
help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.

TEACHING AND LEARNING
Teaching and Learning During Off Campus Learning

In order to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, the College has prepared a plan to facilitate teaching
online.
The College’s commitment to provide challenging and engaging teaching to our students
continues throughout the period the College is closed.
Off campus teaching will allow College students to not only continue learning, it will also allow
them to maintain an ongoing connection with their peers and teachers.

As such, in the event of temporary closure to the College, or exclusion of students from the
campus:
• Lessons will be still be provided each day
• Student work will still be checked and assessed by their teachers
• Teachers will still be available to teach/ask questions
• Formal assessments will still proceed where possible (even if creative
    adjustments are required)

More specifically, Primary teaching staff have already distributed Home Learning Packs and will
email their students work at the beginning of each week the College is closed. These emails will
be sent out on Monday, between 7:30am-8:30am.

Secondary students will also receive work via email for each of their classes between 7:30am-
8:30am, but they will receive this work each day the College is closed.

In other words, Secondary students who normally have six different classes that day, will receive
six emails between 7:30am-8:30am that morning.

The subject of these emails will start with “LESSON” (in capital letters), and will outline specific
activities, readings, questions for students to complete for that day/that week.

College teachers will continue to strive to provide authentic lessons to all students whilst the
College is closed, as it is important that, irrespective of the circumstances, our students do not fall
behind the required syllabus outcomes.

The amount of classwork sent home will be commensurate with a student’s Year Group and
learning ability, but the College will continue to monitor and reflect on these processes; your
feedback in this area is always welcome.
OFF CAMPUS LEARNING PLAN - Student & Parent Guide - Pronto Marketing
Off Campus Learning Plan
                                                                                               Penrith Anglican College

Any classwork sent home will not refer to texts, technology or equipment that students do not
have access to away from the College. However, this might require rearranging the order of
topics and content to enable work that is suitable for off campus learning.

In addition, the College is currently upskilling teaching staff in order to implement remote
video lessons via programs such as SeeSaw and Zoom. Such technology will be particularly
encouraged for our Year 11 and 12 classes, but will be open for year groups across the College
and will be scheduled by teachers individually.

Finally, in order to give students predictable times of communication, teaching staff will be
available for immediate email response (within 30 minutes) in line with their regular timetable
commitments, as if they were in class with their students.

For Primary, this means teaching staff will be available throughout a normal teaching day
outside of RFF and regular breaks; for Secondary, this means teaching staff will be immediately
available during the times their students would normally be in their class.

Eg: for a Year 7 Maths in Period 2, the teacher will be available for email responses between
9:25am and 10:20am.

Just as it is important in the physical classroom, classroom teachers will still be checking
student understanding and completion of work they have sent home. Therefore, as much as
it is possible, the lessons and work set for students will allow teaching staff to check student
work and monitor their progress.

This might include work set through educational interfaces such as Canvas, OneNote,
Education Perfect, Typing Tournament, Maths Invaders and See Saw. Classroom teachers
might also request that students regularly email their completed work each afternoon/at regular
intervals.

Although students will be given a level of autonomy about what time in the day they complete
work and take breaks, if students are not completing or submitting the work their teacher has
left for them, teachers will email home. If further contact is required teachers may also make
contact by phone to ensure work is being completed.

WELLBEING
Classroom and Mentor Group teachers will be in regular contact with students to ensure well-
being programs and considerations are still followed.

A few key summary points for parents to consider in regards to proactive wellbeing
approaches:

• When communicating with your child, ensure that you present the age appropriate facts.
Try to restrict or control the amount of news exposure your child hears at this time.

• Continue with good health practices implementing and emphasizing good hygiene
practices. Furthermore, habits that build healthy sleep hygiene, maintain a balanced diet
and include situation appropriate physical activity are also very beneficial.

• Establish a routine for your child’s online learning through things such as timetabling of
daily tasks and planning ahead for larger assessments. Be involved in your child’s learning
journey to encourage and motivate them.

• Both positive and negative emotions are contagious, so work on activities that build up
healthy emotions such as practising gratitude. There are some online apps and websites
that can be helpful in managing anxiety and know that if these negative emotions build and
    continue, seek help.

What Students Can Expect with Off Campus Learning

College teaching staff will be in regular contact with students via email and other means. Each
morning students will receive emails from any teacher they would normally have on that day.
There will also be lessons they arrange to use other forms of technology and learning tools.
Teaching staff will read student work via OneNote, Canvas or email and reply with feedback to
any on tasks or assessments if necessary, in a timely manner.

Students will be provided with learning activities and tasks each day. Some teachers may require
students to use your device, will use familiar platforms like Canvas, while others may try and
introduce new technology like Zoom.

Using Technology

Students should ensure they have their normal device with them for learning at home and have
access to all school learning platforms. Students should also download and make sure they are
familiar with the Zoom app in preparation for any video conferencing that might be required.

Students are reminded that at all times they will still be required to follow the guidelines of our
BYOD /IT User Agreement and ICT Policies; these still apply for off campus learning.

Students across the College should be familiar with College expectations regarding the use of
technology. Some important expectations are noted below:

• Be appropriately dressed and presented for any video conferencing

• Avoid eating, drinking or doing other household chores (cleaning) while you are engaged
        in a call or discussion.

• Remember you are students and even though video conferencing may seem more
relaxed and casual, respecting staff is paramount. The same standards of
        communication apply as at school.

• Communicate with your teacher if you are unable to participate in a call or complete
certain work due to illness, network issues or other circumstances.

• Locate yourself in an area free of distractions, that is quiet and has good internet
        connection.

Other Helpful Suggestions For Off Campus Learning

Establish a Routine

• Start to develop a routine as quickly as you can. This will help you settle into patterns
and keep up with your workload. Try and be proactive at getting started and setting
    aside learning activities.

• Ideally, keep to your normal school timetable where possible.

Know How to Access Information

• Different teachers may use different platforms to provide lessons and content and to
communicate with you. Know what is being used for different classes and that you can/know
how to log in and gain information.

• Share this information with your parents so they are aware as well.

Develop Good Digital Habits

• Avoid emailing your teachers too often if you don’t need too. They will be receiving a lot of
    emails to work through.

• Save your work regularly

• Keep your content organised into files or drives where you can easily find them, this will make
your transition back to school a lot easier.

Have a Clear Workspace

• Choose a location and have it set up as your workspace.

• Don’t allow clutter to develop here as it will be a distraction and make it hard to focus.

• Move away from this workspace for your breaks and try and get outside.

Taking Care of Yourself During Off Campus Learning

Find a Balance

• Once you have a routine, make sure that it does not become all day behind a screen. Your
schedule provided from school includes breaks and time away from your device. Still make
time for connection with others, exercise, eating and other activities in your day. It is important
to still have time to switch off and enjoy leisure activities. Fresh air and drinking water are both
important to stay healthy. Do not waste the day watching Netflix or being on other devices for
    long periods.

SECONDARY
Connect Regularly with Your Peers and Family

• Different students will do this differently but find ways to stay in contact with your friends
and family. It might be giving them a phone call, facetime, social media but make a time
each day to have conversations with other people. Also, keep talking with your family
about what you have been doing and working on. You are all in the same position and can
talk about what is working and what might be hard.

Reach Out for Support

• The teaching staff at Penrith are always here to help you and will be available to assist
you if you have any issues or problems while being off campus. It is normal to feel
uncomfortable or uneasy about such a unique situation and if being isolated from others
and out of routine might be challenging for you, reach out to parents, friends or your
teachers if you require assistance. We will continue to provide access to the College
    counsellors where needed.

disadvantaged by illness, emergencies or natural disasters while undertaking school-based
assessment tasks.

If your child is unable to undertake an assessment task due to Australian or NSW Government
COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) restrictions, your child should apply for illness / misadventure.
In this situation, your child may complete a substitute task or we could give an estimate such
that your child’s rank in the cohort is maintained. Which solution is chosen is at the discretion
of the Director of Studies and the relevant Head of Department.

HSC exam projects, submitted works and performances

If your child is enrolled in a course that involves projects, performances or works that need to
be submitted to NESA for marking, then they should continue to work on them their projects,
submitted works and performances for the HSC examination. Your child’s teacher will continue
to monitor and record students’ progress to ensure that they are able to certify the work. This
is particularly important for work that is completed outside the school setting.

If your student has an extended absence, we continue to adhere to our illness/misadventure
process and comply with assessment and reporting guidelines for each subject.

If your child is working on group performances for the HSC examination, we will continue
to follow NSW Health and Department of Education advice in regards to hygiene and social
distancing.

Mandatory work placement in VET

NESA is aware of the impact of COVID-19 on the work placement service provider program,
with a number of employers indicating their inability to continue providing work placement
opportunities at this time. NESA is working with the school sectors regarding possible interim
arrangements, and will provide further advice shortly.

Year 12 IB Students

The College is in close communication with the International Baccalaureate Organisation as
they make decisions regarding the ongoing situation.

Assessments will go ahead as scheduled and the relevant College policies still apply.

Students and parents will be made aware of any adjustments which need to occur to the
format or delivery of assessments as is appropriate.
