Special Educator, Artist, Educational Advocate Sculptor and Public Artist
Jay Coleman, M.A. Ed., H.D. has been in the service of children for Beth Nybeck is a sculptor and public artist. She creates elegant metal
over 15 years. With experience teaching and as an administrator in artwork that responds specifically to their surrounding environment.

inspire children and adults of all ages and ability levels. His focus has
been Autism spectrum disorders with regards to all children, especially
its impact on the African-American Community.
As a portrait painter, he has been commissioned by presidents of
colleges and countries (Angola, Cape Verde). His portrait of Rosa Parks
hung at her memorial service and his murals bring color to many DC
schools and communities. Recently, Coleman unveiled a mural at the
National Museum of African Art celebrating the connections between
Omani and East African cultures. His Mural of former DC Mayor, Marion
Barry was unveiled by DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser and hangs in Ward 8.
Recent projects include ongoing community work, a bronze sculpture
for Barry Farms Recreation Center , 15 bronze medallions for the
Howard Theatre Walk of Fame and three murals commissioned by the

“FOUND YOU!”
In our current cultural, racial and political climate
we are polarized. The reasons we are divided are
many and it is easy to lose sight of the thousands
of reasons we are similar and have common
SOUTH ground with one another. I felt we all needed
D S TR E E T, S . E . CAROLINA a reminder of a reason to come back together.
PARCEL 1 AVENUE , S . E . To seek and to find goodness and light in each
other. Found You! is a piece created out of
whimsy, imagination and a spirit of playfulness.
The sculpture is composed of three rabbits that
are playing a game of Hide and Seek. Hide and
Seek is a child’s game where one person closes
their eyes to count and the other players hide.
It is a simple game of discovery. The sculpture
depicts one rabbit, standing on its haunches, with
its paws covering its eyes. This rabbit is allowing
time for the other two to find a good hiding
spot. The other two rabbits are on all four paws
moving within the plaza space. The rabbits are

designed in a geometric style and will be made
of stainless steel. The surface of each rabbit will
be perforated with a pattern of small circles to
allow light to pass through their form at night.
This artwork is mean to be lighthearted and
playful. There is a simple and profound joy when
we “find” someone. When we take the time to

invest in each other, get to know each other and
we feel genuinely seen and heard by someone.
PAR This is fundamental to our humanity and sense of

belonging. I feel this is vastly missing in our world
or even day to day interactions with one another.
I want these playful rabbits to nudge us to look
for one another and to find the light can shine
through them.

PAR My work stems from an intrinsic desire to

art.Historical research and neighborhood support
are where I begin the design process, working
collaboratively with architects, foundries and

CEL 5 the ability to manage robust budgets and meet
deadlines. Additionally, I enjoy sharing the
mystique of bronze with the world.

SY The Loveful hands sculpture represents the
D S TR E E T, LV evocation of love from the Capitol Hill/ Nations
S.E. AN
IA Capitol communities to the rest of the world.
AV It combines an ancient material, traditionally

S. presented with a contemporary, youth-inspired
E. hand gesture. The impetus behind the design was
to connect a kaleidoscope of viewers through
a destination point that would attract Metro
commuters, tourists and selfie photographers.
The timelessness of bronze symbolizes the idea
that unconditional love can weather any of life’s
elements, create a meeting place for discourse
and yet be sensitive to personal expression. The
French brown Patina will give the piece the iconic
appearance of a small monument and integrate
seamlessly into the landscape design. I hope to
be contributing to DC statuary by sculpting a
new landmark to which visitors will pilgrimage in
the name of love.
Loveful Hands will face PA Ave to attract

photographers, tourists and Metro commuters.
The gesture symbolizes a sense of global and
local community emanating from the Capitol
Hill neighborhood to the rest of the World. The
timelessness of bronze solidifies the idea of
love being able to weather life’s elements and
perform as a reminder of unconditional love. The
goal is that it will become a new DC landmark
that visitors will be inspired to pilgrimage to in
the name of love.

Very few materials embody the permanence, engagement and elegance of bronze. This alloy was selected for “ Loveful Hands” because of its ability to convey the aesthetic of a monument and have the durability to withstand heavy public interaction. The patination process celebrates the material as it ages, creating a long-term interactive process for the viewer. The Eastern Market metro station and now park represent one of the cornerstone communities in the District of Columbia. Our city is saturated with monuments as gathering places and tourist attractions.
