Reflection Page 3 Knowing the Church: Appreciating our Faith II In our reflection on the bulletin two weeks ago, we studied what it means to know Jesus and not just to know about Jesus. To know Jesus is to develop intimacy with him. It is to abide in Jesus as He admonished his followers: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me” (John 15:4). St. Paul through his dedication and love for the Lord did arrive to this special bonding with the Lord Jesus when he publicly affirmed: “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Our knowledge and love for Jesus will lead us to a deeper knowledge and wonderful appreciation of the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ. In our desire to know more about the Church, it is important to acknowledge our identity as members of the Mystical Body of Christ. We can ask the following questions: Who is the Church? What makes the Church different from other institutions; what is her mission is in the world Can we still say that the is still a refugium pecatorum (refuge of sinners)? Is the Church today a field hospital? Can the Church fulfill her mission of evangelization if we embrace the pseudo-culture of indifference that is being popularized in most of world political manifestos, immigration policies, economic regulations, religious dogmatisms, and unencumbered individual idiosyncrasies among the leaders and the members of the Church? Also, without bias, we can ask: what has the Church done for our civil society? what is the Church presently doing for the children of God, especially during this time and age? What more can the Church do for the greater glory of God and the salvation of all men and women? Can the Church be the hope of the common men and women in this country and beyond? In seeking the true identity of the Church, we are curious to know the future plans of the Church to reach out to the men and women of our time. On this note, it may be important to invoke and make present the plans of the Holy Father, Pope Francis concerning who the Church ought to be in his Apostolic Exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel” Evangelii Gaudium 2013 (no. 131) “I dream of a 'missionary option,' that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self- preservation." This missionary option being advocated by Pope Francis would be possible when we courageously open the doors through which we can understand, appreciate, and celebrate who we are as the people of God. It is imperative that people come to know the Church and recognize the true mission of the Church. The traditional ways through which we know God and the celestial realities are also the doors through which we know and enter into full communion with the Church. These ways include: The way of Beauty – Via Pulchritudinis, the way of the Good- Via bonitas, and the way of Truth-via veritatis. They are interconnected ways that reveal the love and mercy of God. The Palmist sees these three ways as the doors of holiness where the just shall enter (Psalm 118: 19 -20). They are the doors through which, we offer and give thanks to the Lord. The way of beauty is a way of nobility. Something beautiful is attractive, people are drawn in total admiration of the beautiful. St. Paul urged us to offer unto the Lord whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is gracious, whatever is worthy of praise (Philippians 4: 8). In the Catholic Church, we offer to God the pure sacrifice of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ. The Church is known for the beautiful faith she proclaims not only by words but by actions through works of charity and justice. There is no institution in the world that feeds the hungry, cloths the naked, takes care of the sick, assists the incarcerated, welcomes the homeless, advocates for the voiceless and strengthens the weak more than the Catholic Church. Through the Church, people are restored to beauty and the souls are made more beautiful and noble as we shall continue to explore in our next reflection. Ad maiorem Dei gloriam Fr. Ben
