Exhibition: 24 Jan to 3 May FREE A celebration of the abstract work of distinguished West Country artist Brian Rice. Work includes his vibrant multi-canvas painting Green Cross, from his formative 1960s London period, Dowth, with its European rock art influence, and later work Horton Rock, 2008, with its lyrical and mischievous twirling lines. Also exhibited will be objects, textiles and books from the artist’s personal collection that have been important to the development of his work. Image: Green Cross, Brian Rice. Exhibition: 8 Feb to 31 May FREE By Royal Appointment: Devon Lace-makers unravels the threads of some previously untold stories, revealing the beauty and technical skill of Devon lace and the history of the people who made and wore it. This new exhibition will feature a replica of Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding dress as seen in the ITV production Victoria. The abundant use of Devon-made lace on the Queen’s dress revitalised the local industry. Linking Royal splendour to rural poverty, the story of lace offers an intriguing insight into the lives of lace makers from the 18th century to today. RAMM’s lace collections and selected loans tell the stories of the men, women and children who made textiles of extraordinary beauty. The exhibition was made possible by support of The Textile Society and Devon Lace Teachers, and generous loans from Her Majesty The Queen; Allhallows Museum, Honiton; Fairlynch Museum and Art Centre, Budleigh Salterton, Exeter Cathedral, Woodbury C of E Primary School and private collectors. Displays What Do You Collect? A seasoned collector 17 Dec to 22 Mar Finders Keepers? gallery After 20 years together, a husband and wife arrived home separately one day with unexpected presents for each other. Unknowingly, each had chosen to buy a set of salt and pepper pots. These quirky gifts were the start of a collection that has now grown to include more sets than they have years together. Viewpoint 14 Jan to 28 Jun The windows in Viewpoint will present a selection by RAMM’s first ever Youth Panel. With funding from the Art Fund, RAMM’s Youth Panel was formed in November 2019. It aims to develop a youth voice across all aspects of RAMM’s work in order to encourage more young people to engage with the museum collections. A different story: an exhibition of photographs by John Paul Evans 11 Feb to 17 May Cafe at RAMM John Paul Evans’ photographs of himself and his partner Peter offer a wry take on traditional family portraiture and gender relations, while paying an affectionate tribute to their enduring relationship. This work encourages a dialogue about self-respect, pride, acceptance and equality. Preston Street Union: Anyone May Come and Go 15 Feb to 29 March Making History gallery For the past year, PSU have been working with RAMM’s collections, investigating the flow of people, artefacts and ideas that have enabled Exeter to prosper. Anyone May Come and Go is the result of a collective investigation of the construction of tillet wrappers used in the city’s historic wool trade.
