Bridges of Bishop Auckland
A virtual tour produced by Historic England of 16 of the
town’s most interesting and important bridges, ranging
from road to foot to rail, from fine Medieval masonry
bridges to modern bridges of steel and concrete,
from short iron trusses to great viaducts of brick and
stone. These include the magnificent viaduct, the first railway bridge in England to
be converted to carry a road. The bridge had been threatened with demolition in the
1980s but was saved following a campaign by a local action group - which later became
the Civic Society.
